my 09 CR has 2700miles on it. No Stator failure, But I did have the harness upgrade. hope I didn't skew the results with my non failure stator bike. But I am very concern if it fails after the warranty expires. |

Great job Ron! I find the results interesting. Incidentally, in the Word document the stats of the last question (is the 1125 unreliable) are cut off. Also, the harness upgrade is a recall and therefore free whether your bike is in warranty or not. I can't understand why 12 people have not had it done, unless they are still planning to bring it in. If you do another poll, please ask if people have a battery tender. Mine is always on one, and I have yet to experience any problems. (Message edited by jng1226 on September 01, 2010) |

> I can't understand why 12 people have not had it done I've chosen not to have it done. I see no point in the change. |

Unfortunately the survey website only allows you to have 100 responses without paying a membership. Attached are the results of the first 100 responses. I do not plan on paying the membership fee to continue the survey. If someone out there has a full membership, or knows of another site that has absolutely free surveys, please make up one of your own that hopefully eliminates any errors found in this one. These results are definitely not good, but they are perhaps better than the epidemic that you would suspect is occurring if you just read the individual posts on this board. |

Jim - I guess I don't fully understand the harness upgrade. I never had a problem with my charging system (yet), and when first heard about the recall I had it done very early. I've skipped the threads because it doesn't apply to me (yet) so I remain ignorant of what the downsides are. Thanks again Ron, very interesting results. It's been said many times before and bears repeating: the nature of internet forums will cause the majority of posts to be reporting of problems. All the other people are just out there enjoying the bike! |

> I guess I don't fully understand the harness upgrade. It turns off a leg of the stator when the motor is run below 5k. It's designed to prevent the stator from having too much current demand placed on it, which causes overheating and failure. In my opinion, for a rider who does not ride the motorcycle in a spirited fashion (for whatever reason), it helps prevent stator failure by not allowing the electrical system enough current to support operating a standard complement of street accessories (lights, for example) and fully charging the battery. Basically, it exchanges on set of issues for another. Since my '09 is mostly a "B" track bike -- I leave it so it's not hard to make it street legal and I keep it insured and tagged just in case I need a backup street ride -- I've not bothered. I'm rarely below 5k RPM, so the harness update would essentially never function, and I don't see value in fixing something that ain't broke. |

Jng1226, it is not a recall, it is a free product enhancement program. Totally optional. My dad got a similar letter from HD for his Electraglide for upgraded gaskets due to a high number of low mile leaks. Ron, Google Docs lets you make a similar form, and as far as I know, no limit on entries. I have seen it used for tracking fuel economy and stuff, I don't see why it couldn't be done for a survey. I think I may have done one once, I would need to look into it again. |

Jim/Froggy - thanks for clarifying. Whew, that was much better than reading through 200+ posts! I thought it was a recall and had it done. I'm like you Jim, even on the street I don't spend much time lugging around so perhaps that is why I never had the problem... |

Probably, but the last question was more or less irrelevant. I just put it in because I was curious about what people were thinking. The more straightforward fact-based questions would be difficult to answer incorrectly though. I think it is pretty interesting that out of the 39 people that reported a stator failure, 31 of them had it fail AFTER the harness was installed. |

I don’t know about the survey, but in my little world I know three people who own CR’s. First was myself, bad stator at 2400 miles; before the harness upgrade. My friend who I talked into getting a discounted 09 CR, stator failed with harness update at 1800 miles. Some guy I met at a gas station, stator replacement at 6000 miles, but was second time. Harness was upgraded after the first stator failure. I’m not mechanically knowledgeable nor do I know the criteria of the survey, but I know of three CR owners in one small town here in Illinois that all had stator issues, one with two replacements. My riding buddy is still waiting (two weeks now) for parts. Common sense would dictate that this is a bigger problem than some people wish to admit. If I knew six 1125 owners, all with stator problems, three out of six is still too many. How many of these CR’s were sold anyway? The way my local HD came off was that it was rather common. I didn’t ask how many, but it was lightly insinuated that plenty of stators have been replaced. I live in the far west burb’s of Chicago. What about the bigger dealers? The dealer where I traded my CR in called me asking about the voltage dropping;dead battery. Glad I traded it when I did. I don’t know the details. Not my problem anymore. I realize I shouldn’t have a word to say considering I’m no longer an owner, but I’m interested in seeing how things play out with the whole situation, and if my friend should get an extended warranty. I want to see an actual percentage of stator replacements per bikes sold. Getting an actual percentage is the only way to determine how big the issue is; until then its only speculation. I have been visiting this site from the start. I only made an account when I started having issues. Realize not everyone is going to take a survey or post on this site. Answer to the question is yes, yes. the stator fails just fine before the harness upgrade and after. But like I said, I'm only stating what I personally experienced. |

Just a note: if anyone wants to start a survey that doesn't have any limitations (number of questions or responses) I can host them at MotoTheory.com Just PM me and I 'll set it up. I have a survey component that is really easy to use. |
