Yep. Front fork seal blew out riding around. I guess I gotta order in the parts. Gave me a good scare as I rounded a pretty normal turn coming into the parking garage and the front tire slipped out. I was lucky as heck I came around on a dry spot and saved it.

For anyone that has completed this maintenance in the past, what special tools and parts will I require? Primarily just the ones for the shock service. I will have to try to run over to the HD shop tomorrow after work. I ain't sore against the bike for this so much as I am the roads around here. O well, guess this ads another sad story to the forum : /

Hopefully everything will fall into place and I'll get 'er back on the road soon. Also coming up on the 12k service. Anything I should add to the list of special tools to order? Also how long has it taken others to get shims and gaskets in? How long has it taken folks to complete the 12k service? I'm a bit worried since I am pressed for time.

How many miles are on the front forks since their last service?

Well Iv never had this problem but I do have a spare fork laying in the garge. If you want the seals or the hole fork pm me. I guess ill go half price of what the dealer is gonna charge you for the new. Idk if putting used seals is a good idea... just trying to help out.

also on another note. I have had many people tell me that when tying down the front forks when hauling it in a truck or trailer, that putting to much down force on the forks can blow the seals or doing it much can lead to blown seals.

It is likely a combination of the two...roads here are terrible. But I did recently did trailer it a few places. Seals didn't fully blow out until I started riding it around on the streets though for a few days. Roads here are like hitting speed bumps on the highway. I guess I'll try to take it easy when hauling it.

In the mean time, I just remembered I bought the extended warranty :P. I might as well set up an appointment. Worst thing about that is I could do the job in less than half the time since I already know what needs to be done. I also trust myself more to work on the bike (its sad that life has come to not being able to trust anyone with anything). Guess I don't need the list. I already knew what I needed for the most part, like the cap handle tool...and the holder tool. Just was wondering if someone had a complete list to jar my memory on anything else I'd need.

Seal failure does happen for no apparent reason sometimes - luck of the draw - or maybe just a part at the low end of the spec.

Special tools: for a complete rebuild, you'll need a fork spring compressor, soft-jaw vise or strap wrench, a seal driver (47mm) and (not needed, but handy) a threaded rod to hold the damper tube - someone else on here just rolled duct tape over the end of a screwdriver, threaded it in, and used that.

You will also need a syringe and level device when you refill the fork to get the levels right. If you can get your hands on the service manual, it will make life easier...

I just had the right one blow. anyone know if its a warranty issue? or should i do it myself. have done mtn bike forks before.

It is warranty-able as long as you are in your warranty period. A dealership could deny if if they felt you caused it by improper riding (IE if they could prove most definitely that you were doing a crap ton of wheelies or something), but a dealership wouldn't really benefit much from denying warranty work.
