From CustomFighters.com:

quote:

Just curious about the Buell ZTL front braking system I have on my Bandit. Specifically the mounting of the rotor onto the rim. Its got a bit of a funky setup, with bolts that have spacers in them, and springs behind that, to in effect keep the bolts from tightening righ down on the rotor. Leaving a bit of floating room for the rotor, both in and out, and clockwise/counter clockwise.

My question is, when I hit the front brake, there is a fairly noticable thump that I can feel as the rotor will turn just a tad bit (1/16" maybe) before it gets stopped on its mounting bolts/spacers. Should I be able to notice this? Or does it sound like I have the rotor mounted wrong?

Anybody with a buell want to tell me what there front brake feels like, or have a look and see if their rotor has the same play as mine does.

This rules out the forks and steering bearing as a noise maker....right?

Mine makes noise without applying the brake.

All floating rotors have some "play".
The front end clunk has been heavily discussed although, it has been awhile. Short story for mine is; don't worry about it, it is in the fork design. Apparently a plastic part inside the fork has a tendency to move.

There would have to be a lot of play between the rotor and spacers for there to be a noticeable anything.

Eaton: If you read the post you'd realize that he is just using the front wheel off a Buell...not the forks...that's why this is interesting. It rules out the forks for this particular noise.

I did read the post and just went off on a tangent. Thanks for pointing it out for me.

I just wasn't sure if that caught your eye is all. My noise has returned with a vengeance. I think I'm going to retorque the steering head again as last time that stopped the majority of the noise.
