I had the harness upgrade done after getting the notice, prior to that, NO problems. After upgrade, fried stator. What about you guys? |

Interesting and good to know how easy it is to bypass. |

My bike ('09 CR) was shipped to the dealer during the fire sale with the new harness. It had less than 4 miles on it. New battery, newest flash, the new turn signals, etc. These threads freak me out and I ride with the volt display all the time. In short, it stays between 13-14 volts, and has exhibited zero problems. Perhaps the "fix" really is a fix if it's installed on virgin equipment ? (Message edited by joebuell on August 29, 2010) |

Good point, joebuell. Has anyone had the fix and had their stator replaced, and then have the replacement stator fail? |

No problems before the update, 09 CR. No problems since the update. The fix had NOTHING to do with voltage. IT'S ALL ABOUT HEAT. Low RPMs don't circulate enough oil through the stator to cool it, so the "fix" had to be implemented. In a nutshell...people weren't revving the bikes high enough to circulate the oil and cool the stator. So, here's the reward - don't give it enough revs, it won't give you enough V. So there. Rev it up, keep it cool...and it'll give you all the V you think you need. If you READ the paperwork, it mentions an RPM threshold. It's either 4k or 5k, I forget which, but I tend to run my CR over 5k all the time anyway. It's where the engine is happiest, the power is best, the grin is biggest...and the V display consistently reads over 13v. If I get stuck in traffic, it drops...but comes right back up as soon as I open 'er back up. And no, it doesn't ding fuel economy. Wrist position does that, regardless of RPM, but cruising at 5k gets me just the same mileage as cruising at 3k...and, I don't cook anything. THIS IS NOT A 1200 WITH A 6K REDLINE. Rev the damned thing up, don't lug it at 3k rpm all day long. And leave the update in place - battery tenders are cheaper than new stators...but since I rev my bike and I ride it for more than five minutes at a time, I don't need one of those during riding season either. Either that or I'm just lucky...but given the rest of my life, I seriously doubt that's the case. |

Joe...I had the "fix" done at the same time I got a brand new engine, so that theory won't work. Rat...I wish we were all lucky enough that we could drive around town at 5k. I live 13mi away from where I work and with traffic it takes about 40 minutes. The highest speed limit ANYWHERE close to where I live is 45mph, with 35mph being the norm. So maybe you're a little luckier than me (Message edited by westmoorenerd on August 30, 2010) |

West - so....leave it in first. Or second. High revs don't mean you *have* to be wringing it out, mine's perfectly well-behaved at 5k rpm and 5-10% throttle. And, it saves brakes I live - literally - one mile from work. If I go straight there. I don't go straight there. Yes, it's not "in town" so in that I'm lucky...but even on those short hops, I haven't had a charging issue. And if I don't get up early enough to take a nice long ride in to work, I take a "therapy" ride on the way home (usually on the order of 45 minutes or so). |

Yah good luck trying to keep it above 5k rpm and cool in Los angeles heat. Maybe i should move so my stator doesn't fry. On a related note though,..considering its not an exact comparison because there is less traffic at night,..i have better Vs at night when its cooler. But when that engine hits CT 200 during the day, you better be close to your destination or you'll start to see high 11s and batt light. |

Do you want me to tell you how I sustained 70-80mpg for about 15 miles on the highway today? I'll give you a hint, I was below 5k (I still need to PM you regarding my Quest, I need to actually use it for once) |

Yeah, but Froggy...? You weigh as much as my helmet. It's not a fair comparison lol. And - IDLE and OFF? They don't count!!!! |

Ratbuell, your lucky. JoeBuell, sorry but your day is coming. Mac inger, you preaching the gospel right there. I got my bike used post fire sale before the fix. It only had 280 miles then they gave it the fix before I took the bike home. Less than 30 days she started dying a little more each day. Finally froggy said it was my stator. I new he was right but went for a 400 mile trip anyway. She died a horrible death, but I bought her back to life and rode her like a wild zombie from hell all the way back to Philly. Then 20 mins to work the next day and 20 mins home. She's in the shop getting new stator. At idle she should climb up about 1.5 volts but mine is only going up about 0.2 or 0.3 volts. Sounds like the voltage reg to me! How bout you froogy??? And she has about 5500miles |
