I was riding home from work yesterday and the "system voltage" came on and had no working tach and the mph's just said "---". I called and made an appt. but they can't get me in till Tuesday. I got up this morning and left at 5am all seemed well for a while until the lights were what seemed like flickering from high to low by themselves, then I lost the cluster again, just black. Didn't come back on till I got into the parking lot at work..... nice... On the way home it was doing it again, on and off.... This "ok" to keep riding? I just don't want to hurt the bike. Still runs like a bat out of hell.... Also it is a 09 and has the harness update, has been de-noid'd. (Message edited by jasbiz66 on August 26, 2010) |

probably voltage regulator... when it does it turn off and restart. the cluster will most likely be normal. if it is check your voltage... might be high. it is kinda weird the flickering tho... maybe a loose connection just something to think about todd |

Voltage regulator when it does it they are over charging turn on the brights on sometimes works or let the bike idle. I had to fight to get mine covered since the dealer could not re produce it. |

I had this happen a couple times recently, mostly while in the very hot weather in Southern California. Saw my voltage get up to almost 18 volts(!). |

Very likely. Probably a good idea to put some kind of over-voltage protection circuit in the connection next time. |

I have the same system voltage problem. I now know what to listen for! A real loud hum is associated with the system voltage. Mine has been high as 16.3 and low as 12. If you turn the bike off then start, switch your toggle view you have like 5 sec. to get a picture with your high voltage reading. I am not taking mine in for a while...there are no error codes to support my pictures! This is my high 16.3
This is my low 12
and this is while riding

Yep that's what mine does, took it in today and they said it was the voltage regulator like you guys said. they will order one and hopefully have it in by next tuesday. Said it will only take a half hour to put it on.... Thanks for your help! |

Did replacing the voltage regulator fix the problem? Mine started doing this recently - bike was in the shop for IC replacement and leaky water pump. Got it back and now this is happening. Since the engine was rotated for the water pump repair I'm curious if a ground was left loose or something - the problem goes away after 15 minutes or so, long enough for the frame to get warm. |
