Hello Gents, I just installed new K & N filter, FMF Apex slip-on and an Erik Buell Racing ECM programmed for FMF on my '09 R. No instructions came with ECM. I did not unhook the battery, I simply unplugged old and plugged in new. I did not do a TPS reset (again no instructions and possibly ignorance on my part). Bike would start but would soon die. Also died immediately if I tried giving it gas. Put stock ECM back in (again without unhooking battery) and bike started right up and ran great. Is my problem that I need to do the TPS reset? If so, is the procedure the same as the 3 throttle stop to stop movements like for the 08's? Also, just what exactly does the Erik Buell Racing ECM do differently that stock. I just wanted to do what many on here said to do and I trust Erik Buell Racing as well, so I ordered it. When I rode the bike w/ the FMF installed and the stock ECM, it seemed to run pretty damn good to me. No hiccups, or hesitation, and no backfiring either. Excellent responsiveness and bike pulled real hard right thru RPM range. For $250.00 dollars is the gain really worth it? I don't race or track day the bike, just ride very spirited and aggressive. I really don't need to worry about shaving 2 seconds off if I'm running out for a loaf of bread. Just curious what you guys are experiencing w/ new ECM's and what your opinions are. Thanks much for your input!

Do a TPS reset for sure, the fueling & spark timing on the ECM will be different to the stock one, if you leave the stocky in it will run super lean just take a look at the exhaust shootout, FMF with stock ECM it got as lean as 19:1 AFR very very bad. I have the FMF & a custom tune on my CR & it hauls ass, I have the Ebrr ECM aswell but I prefer my other tune as I like engine braking, with the Ebrr its by by engine braking.. |

Try again, but do it the right way, it only takes a few extra minutes. Disconnect battery Swap ECMs Reconnect battery Do tps reset You won't believe the difference. I just did the ECM for my barkers exhaust, and the lower rpm driveability is fantastic. |

Definately do the TPS reset and see if that helps, watch the values in diag mode when it's done to confirm. Just on the very off chance that you have an "older configuration" of Erik Buell Racing ECM (and that is HIGHLY unlikely) you may want to fire the bike up etc before you put the pod back on and take a short run without the pod on. The first batch of ECMs needed the BAS disconnecting, it's been a while since they needed that but it may be worth a quick test (i.e. try disconnecting it and see if that helps). Mine starts perfectly with the new ECM in place but I MUST open the throttle slowly at least once before riding off or the bike will stall the first time I open the throttle any wider than a third. "Blipping" the throttle with the Erik Buell Racing ECM installed causes mine to stall, just the once...but that's once every start cycle. It's hard to tell if yours is the same from your description. Are you able to describe what happens better? Is it just a case of: It starts Left to idle It just stops If so that's different to mine, mine is fine apart from that very first throttle opening where an aggressive move makes it stall. Two small blips on the driveway and then I'm off...much to my neighbours delight LOL |

You may have to disconnect the Bank Angle Sensor. Mine did the same thing until I disconnected that. It is located just in front of the ECM. If that doesn't work you may have to send it back for a re-flash. |

Why would you not reset the TPS, a MUST do whenever istalling ANY new ECM to any Buell motorcycle that is fuel injected. The ECM must be calibrated to the TPS, so that it knows where the throttle closed position is and thus the throttle position at all times. As it is your new ECM may think that the throttle is closed when it is really 1/8th open, or vice versa. Rezero the TPS, aka reset the TPS. Then get a shop manual and read it. Then peruse all the tech discussions here. Sorry if the above sounds harsh, but people who lack at least the basic understanding of the bike and how it works have NO business dabbling in performance modifications. Did the TPS reset per Badlionsfan's instructions and bike fired right up! I wish Erik Buell Racing included ECM instructions for this install but they must figure if you're changing out you already know this (I didn't but do now!) Went for a ride and this bike RIPS! I like the way the FMF "barks" when you wack the throttle. I can't believe how responsive and quick revving this bike is.....even off of idle! Jules: What values am I looking for that you speak of? Can you be more descriptive and explain the procedure? I do have a wire harness plug (capped) just in front of the ECM but it is not plugged into anything. I assumed it might be for testing or diagnostics. Thanks for the help guys! |

Nice job my friend! Glad it worked out for you. I'll be doing the same very soon, so your experiences benefit others like me. Tutt |
