just got my 2009 cr back from the dealer with a 2010 engine, due to the cam chain guides deteriorating in the original engine, anyways my charging voltage is at 12.0 at idle, and 13.1 max running at 5k rpms, with my 09 engine i saw 14.4 consistently at 5k and 13ish idling, is this normal for the 2010 engine? also they left the 2009 voltage regulator in, and did not install a 2010 regulator, is that a problem??

Sounds like you are doing OK. Rip around all you want. Ride it like you stole it.

That's the same voltages my 2010 motor runs at for the most part.

Actually that sounds OK to me (based on my VERY limited knowledge). Given the issues with stators are predominantly heat related I'd suggest that a lower voltage at idle is a good thing (within limits) as the stator will be producing less heat when the oil flow is lowest.

13.1 at 5k seems a little low I guess, I'd hope for around 13.5 - 14.5 BUT it depends on whether the bike actually NEEDS the higher voltage to replace what was lost starting the bike and running it.

I don't think it'd worry me at all, I'd just run it around for a while and keep an eye on things. I might be tempted to chuck it on a tender at the weekend and see how long it takes to get to fully charged but TBH it sounds good to go.

Once again - this is just my opinion

has any one actually installed a Ammeter to see what the load is?
voltage and amperage are interrelated. are we using the power or is it being shunted to ground and rejected to heat.
I need to do this and do some thermal imageing on the stator cover and see if there really is a hot spot due to oil flow blockage

well did 400mi this weekend, ill tell you what, the 2010 engine is so much quieter and smoother than the 09, and i have a FMF pipe!! so much less rattley if thats a word, anyways charging stayed ok all weekend dropped to 12.3 a few times in heavy traffic with fans running, otherwise 13.8-14.1 cruising between 4-5500 rpms, i guess all is well.... to be continued i guess!

Kenm123t - "Thermal Imaging" Flir? I want to see one of those in use the same way as you have suggested. Please document and post! :-)

{what did the cam chain guides deterioration sound like? had a squealing noise, like a loose alternator belt on a car, at about 35mph, came out of nowhere, rode for about 5-7 seconds, found a safe pull off, squeezed in clutch, engine quit, let sit for a few, restarted, engine had a distinctive rattle. easiest way for your dealer to tell is to simply drop the oil strainer screen and check for debris... }
