well both my bikes have been down for a month now. apparently still waiting on stator covers which, for the third time, the backorder date has been extended. just want a thread to see how many miles your bikes had, if you had the harness upgrade installed, what went bad on the bike, and how many miles since it has been fixed. 2009 1125CR 18,xxx miles stator failed. approximately 3,xxx miles after harness was installed. 2009 1125R 7,xxx miles stator failed. approximately 3,xxx miles after harness was installed. |

the dealer told me that they will remove my harness upgrades btw. |

My bike has 5600 miles on it, and the stator failed 600 or so miles after the update was done. Still waiting to see if it will be on the road today or not..... |

Stator failed at ap. 4000 mi. Fixed. Harness upgrade at 10500 mi. Crossed fingers now. Warranty expires in Feb. |

my 09cr had the upgrade at 15000kms and the stator failed at17000kms my dealer said it might be fixed by aug.6 i will not be holding my breath sure glad I have my v-strom and klr to ride. Mike |

i have an 09 CR and the stator failed at 3500 miles. i got the harness and the stator after a month long wait its been a thousand miles later now and so far so good |

I was jealous of the '09s for their swingarm spools and the white color scheme, but after reading about the harness recalls and stator failures, I'm glad I got an '08. That sucks to have two bikes down for the exact same reason. Of course, the funny thing is that of the four bikes I own, two of them are down for the same thing--crashed by one of my brothers. Within a one-week period, no less! Fortunately the Buell wasn't party to that misfortune. |

you got 18,000 miles out of the 09 stator? are those all highway miles? I'm wondering if people losing stators so early are sitting in rush our traffic everyday. |

Yep. I have no doubt that had I NOT done the harness upgrade it would still be good. I ride in traffic, highway, twisties, gas station trips, long trips, everything. I think they key was that more often than not my tach was at or above 5k RPMs. |

I agree with 07xb12ss, the harness upgrade seems to be the culprit with my bike, mine was solid before this, but I think it is the reason it is burned out. |

I don't think the harness causes the failures. It exposes an already weakening stator. The 09 stator outputs 520w, the harness upgrade shuts off 1/3 below a certain RPM reducing output to 347w. Let's say your weakening stator is running at 90%: 520w at 90% = 468w 347w at 90% = 312w Our bikes can run with 468w (remember they were designed to run with a 432w stator), but 312w is not enough power to charge the battery, maintain spark, etc. Personally, I think the harness upgrade is a joke. |

Mine failed at 800 miles. I had the upgrade done while it was in the shop. 3300 now with no problems yet, but the summer heat and the ridiculous heat generated by the bike are conspiring to kill it. Under normal riding conditions, my volts never get above 13 and drop as low as 11.9 at stoplights. I will not ride it in a situation where I might get stranded somewhere really inconvenient and I am waiting for the CEL. That and the heat off the frame takes all the fun out of riding above 85 degrees anyway. |

My bike was still running 13.7-14.3 volts at 15,xxx miles before I got the harness upgrade so I don't think my stator was weak. And I ride all summer in Texas so I don't think heat was a factor either. The only heat that would be killing those without the harness would be the lack of oil from those riders lugging their bikes. Is that acceptable? No. But I think that's the issue and they aren't going to invest a lot of money in fixing it. |

Remember, those wattage figures are peak output, which is at a high RPM. Realistic output will be much lower with normal riding. |

09CR 3k before the harness 600miles later the stator went south 6k now seems OK |

i think this thread would be better if people with 09 bikes that have NOT had any stator issues post up how many miles they've put on their bikes as well |

This was asked before. Currently I have 12,690 miles on my 09, CR, original stator...no harness change (upgrade ?). I did modify the cover to hopefully...let more oil flow to the back side of the stator. Removed the big glob of silicone, and lowered the ribs a little more so the harness is farther away from the stator itself. The stator insulation is a little dark, but as of a few weeks ago...not crispy (burnt). I do have a new stator sitting in the bedroom..just in case. I'm hoping that because I made my last payment the other day...it doesn't add to any possib;e problems...! Mike (Message edited by 1_mike on July 23, 2010) |

'09R Harness upgrade mis-installed: 2000 miles Stator fried: 2500 miles So far, have 100 miles on new stator, correctly installed harness upgrade. Volts range from 13.5V-14.4V. |

2009 R with 5900miles, harness at about 4000miles, voltage regulator at about 4200miles. diagnosed and fixed VR on my dime about 4500miles. my volts usually about 13.3-13.8 today riding in socal heat was dropping to 12.9 occasionally... definitely nervous for impending failure and hoping an aftermarket stator works out for some people. Ill probably grind off some of those oil blocking ribs in the cover and remove some of the excess goo from the wires. todd |

Todd - I'm in your boat with the Cali sun dropped it to 12.9at the stop, then went back up to 13.3 - when moving off the line - lol - coolant temp 202. EZ |

Freight_dog, are you running any electrical accessories? Maybe it's your voltage regulator, but not getting above 13 volts is not right. |

I added HID's about 1000 miles ago, but the volts were still in the high 13's until recently. |

Tpoppa, Your logic is flawed in that the ECM is supposed to allow FULL stator operation below a minimum voltage threshold, regardless of potential destruction to the stator. ac |

I'm very interested in 1_mike's project. I saw a fried stator yesterday, it was 3/4 crispy. I told Max to expect more, we have a bunch of 09s around here. Zack |

My 09 1125R's stator fried at 2750 miles, 190 miles after harness update. 80 miles later I'm back in shop after my left foot was left soaked in oil after a short 25 mile ride. They said gasket may have been defective. I work in parts (aviation) so I understand this stuff happens (in all industries) but am getting disappointed as the summer is passing me bye and I'm spending my time making 170 mile round trips and pissing fuel money away! I hope this next fix is finally for good! I'm wondering if maybe this would have been a better resolve? http://www.EBRacing.com/shop/product140.html

I just dropped my 09 off this morning. 2600 miles when they put the harness in. 3800 miles when the stator died. They warned me that they were on backorder...but they might have one in the shop they had ordered for a different bike I could have. Fingers are crossed. ac |

Tpoppa, Your logic is flawed in that the ECM is supposed to allow FULL stator operation below a minimum voltage threshold, regardless of potential destruction to the stator. ac Perhaps, except for the two times (two different stators) I watched it idle down to the 10s where there isn't enough voltage to maintain spark and it stalls. Prior to the upgrade, my voltage never dipped below 13. The harness upgrade is flawed fix approved by HD beancounters. |

Tpoppa, Notice I used the word "supposed"...because that isn't what I have seen either. I think the whole system is messed up and garbage. ac |

Mine will still get up to 14 V if I can keep the CT below 180. I managed to get on the highway with only one stoplight and the CT never got above 180. On the highway it dropped to 175 degrees and the volts were between 13.7 and 14. As soon as the CT started climbing above 180, the volts dropped the high 12 V range. At any rate, I expect the stator will have a limited life expectancy. |

Has anyone taken apart (or seen a circuit diagram of) the gizmo that constitutes the "harness upgrade"? There must be an EE among us who could tell us- What the gizmo really does, given what's in it
- What real problem, if any, the gizmo addresses
