It happened this morning to me also. I ride about 5 miles in neighborhoods and almost every place is 25 mile zone, my voltage went down to low 11's, and as soon as i could I rode at 5K+ rpms and went up to 13.8v. But man, as soon as I got out of the highway at the first light it went down to 12.3 in no time. Coming back is going to be interesting... this is how it looks 50% of the time: ... good luck keeping it at 5K rpms!! |

So how did the rewinding go? EZ |

I am interested to hear how anyone is doing with the re-winding too. I will ask to see if I can keep the old burnt part to have it re-wound as well, if that tends to last longer. Mine fried yesterday. |

Is rewinding these things an arcane art form, or can any skilled mechanic do it? |

In theory it could be done by hand at home, but I suspect it would be one of those things that is really not worth the trouble, and hard to do such that it would work. You would have to carefully unwind it, make clear notes on how it goes back on, then follow those notes very closely. You would have to have the right size wire, with the right kind of insulation, and be sure not to nick it anywhere during the install. You would then need to pot it / glue it correctly with the right kind of coating to make it stable over the long term. So possible yes, practical no. |

For stator rebuilders like anything else, find the SME (Subject Matter Expert) and be happy, all else is a waste of energy. (Message edited by dannybuell on July 16, 2010) |

So, it looks like stator number 2 is fried. This one was installed after the harness upgrade. I've been getting battery lights for the last couple days, today SYS VOLTAGE & CEL. I'll be pushing to have the harness removed and the '08 Stator/Rotor installed. |

I know many people won't do it.. but I wonder if would be a good idea contact someone like : www.rickystator.com .. of course not me, because I have no idea what the real issue is. |

Interesting, if they are using them for race bikes...why are they for sale? Is the cover necessary to got to the 2008 stator? I know the rotor is and I don't see that listed as part of the package. ac |

those are 08's. what do you think they are using? |

" We like this combination on our race engines." That is what has me confused. If you are building race bikes...and you "like" this setup...why/how would you be able to sell it as a "take off"? ac |

Does the Erik Buell Racing stator setup come with rotor? It says "stator and cover assembly" and then goes on to mention the "associated rotor", does that mean you have to buy the rotor separately? ac |

If they like it for their race bikes, they know others will too, so they sell them even though it sounds like its just OEM parts like the fuel injectors and resistor plug. |

Let me clarify, What I meant to say is what are they doing with the 09 ones they are replacing those 08's with? |

Probably sending the '09 stators back to HD in exchange for the more racing appropriate '08 stators they have on the site |

Fresnobuell - I thought electrical parts were not returnable. Now they are swapping parts? IDK. |

well after 2 weeks I finally got my rewound stator back from custom rewind, I have since istalled it and put a 100 miles on it, so far the volts are looking great, only when at idle with all lights on (HIDs Hi and Lo) and fans running will i see the volts drop below 13. i let it sit like this for 5 minutes and the lowest the volts got was 12.4, no battery light or CEL came on and once the RPMs get above 2000 the volts go back up and usually stay between 13.5-13.8. so far im calling it good enough for me.

Justin, That coating looks heavy duty compared to the OEM stuff. Did they rewind to the 09 spec of 520w? Do you still have the charging harness upgrade? (Message edited by tpoppa on July 20, 2010) |

Tpoppa, the coating is very thick and nicely done In the note I left with the stator I did leave the specs of what the 09s are and mention that the factory replacements fail as well so i only assume he put the good stuff on I still have the harness on the bike but just not connected, i have it hooked back up the old way...I maybe thinkin that the old stator damaged the Voltage Regulator in some way and maybe the battery, since I have a new regulator in a box Im gonna put that on and a new battery after this coming winter so there will be no excuse for any low volts. once again i must say that im pleased with how the rewinding turned out. $125.00 and the shipping is included in that |

Ultimo_justin - Pardon my asking; Could you give a quick recap, and how much are you into this for everything? |

Danny, what would you like a recap on exactly? the work involved of removing the stator? the price I paid for all this to be said and done? the total down time for me on this was about 2 and half weeks, one day for removing the stator and removing the goop on the inside of the cover, 2 weeks to send stator in and get it back, and one day to install stator. I wasnt the smartest when reading Parricks instructions on removing the stator. for one I did not pull the wires through the harness one at a time, I did them all which made it difficult, another thing I didnt do was use guide rods but luckily I did not scratch any parts, again I shouldve paid more attention. The whole reason I wanted to rewind my stator was because I am SOL with Buell dealers here in this state so I have to fix this bike on my own. I called Garret at Custom Rewind and told him about the 1125R engine and how the stators fry, I asked if he would rewind it, he wanted a pic of it 1st, I sent it to him, he called back and he gave me a price of $125 and that included the shipping, I then went on ahead and sent the stator along with a paper stating all my info and a check for $125. he said it would take 3 days to rewind. so if anybody wants to get their stator rewound at Custom Rewind I would call him before hand reguardless. again as of today I am pleased with the results of how it turned out. the bike runs, the volts stay in range, all is good . I did forget to mention that the rewound stator comes with a 1 year warranty so Dannybuell was this the recap you wanted to know or something else? |

with the goop on the inside cover gone and the insulation on the stator as nice and thick as it is, Im gonna run a guess that this should last at least a minimum of 30,00 miles. AT LEAST lol |

Good info, Justin! Thanks for posting it. That's interesting how they relocated the crossover wires between the legs of the stator. That looks like it would help dissipate the heat also. Keep us informed how it works out. |
