Does anyone know what is meant by the ECM learning when a new pipe or filter is installed? Is it just the AFM being adjusted to suit the readings from the 02 sensor? How long does it take for the learning process?

I don't know what they mean by learning, but the only thing that the ecm changes permanently is the AFV and that is changed based off the o2 readings in closed loop and is then multiplied to the open loop cell values.

Learning insinuates a bit more than the ecm is capable of, imo.

Man just buy the Erik Buell Racing ECM and be done with all that learning junk, your bike will run 100% better no matter what exhaust you have stock or aftermarket. It's set up for a better flowing air filter also.

The ECM constantly monitors its inputs, and makes small corrections to the fuel trim to achieve the desired air fuel ratio. When you have a large change in conditions such as a change in altitude or weather, the ECM has to "learn" the new conditions. This is also true if you make a change to the bike...such as a new exhaust. The amount of time it takes to relearn depends on how big a change was made, and how sophisticated the system is. My 1125r(DDFI3) relearns much faster than my xb9r(DDFI2). Normally, elevation changes take a few minutes, but a pipe change will take a bit longer.

any buell ecm is learning and adapting at all times. if you look at the data in the ecm it tells you the update delay and it has the upper avf and lower afr amounts to apply to the correction. these amounts will balance it out but they are a bit harsh. so it goes 5 steps up and 2 back. during a sequence. so if you only needed 3 points more that works but if you need 4 more it has to do it a few times each way to get a 4 point overall change.

see tunerpro files on your ecm it has the data their. its also got read times for the O2 as well as counts per cycle.

the ebr ecm has to learn as well then its always learning every cycle count on the afv. plus during closed loop area it instant correction based from many sensors not just the O2.

Well the Erik Buell Racing ECM has been ordered. The OEM ECM did not learn very well, it flunked "smooth and pop free" class when the Barker exhaust was put on.

Thanks for all your help.
