Al, I want to also say thanks for all the hard work. Sometimes folks don't realize how much time and effort it takes to produce an honest, factual report that's fair to all the builders. If this report is anything as good as the last one, it will be well worth the wait.
Thanks again from the folks at Drummer Racing Products.
Getting closer. I have most of the graphs generated and fully formatted, and am writing some Excel Macros now to boil down some of the table data for inclusion into tables in the report. After that, it's just a matter of finishing the text, getting Figures labeled, and making the zip file for download. Hopefully only about a week of work....but that is NOT a commitment to releasing it in a week!!
The graphing worked out really well. Each pipe has it's own worksheet in a workbook, and the data for each pipe is in the same place on each worksheet. So it'll be pretty easy to generate any overlays that you want to see just by manipulating the sheet references in the chart data source selection. It'll make more sense when you see it. I'll have the standard graphs as pasted graphics in the test report, but will also include the full spreadsheet in the zip file so that folks can create whatever graph they want (as long as they have Excel and a little bit of knowledge on how to use it).
There's a bunch of things that I'd do differently if I could do the test over. Seems that it's always the case, especially on a VERY time constrained test like this one. But I'll cover these issues in the test report.
That pipe sounds like there is a dip in the power.
??
Where does it sound like there's a dip? The video a couple of posts up showed 122 hp on the superflow, which equals 136-137 on a dynojet. There's a transition from rich to lean at 6k rpm, but there weren't any dips that I recall seeing.
Eh, tons of availble dyno info pertaining to the IL4 bikes.
Would have been really neat if timing would have been a bit different, such that we could have seen the shootout also include testing using the Erik Buell Racing ECMs with all the pipe-specific maps that were not available at the time the shootout kicked off. You know, hind sight being 20/20 and all...
I'll venture a guess and say the Drummer just made 140HP with the next two pipes 2-3HP behind.
More important is the power curve. Very few pipes turn on early and carry the power throughout. Brand A pipe may make a few more HP at a certin point. However if brand B makes the power sooner and carries the power up to peak than it "should" be the quicker pipe. For me I like a pipe that makes TQ early and lots of it. Again I imagine there won't be but 1-2 pound feet difference between the top three.
The charts are coming soon. Many will be suprised, some will be disappointed. The baseline run was lower than 130 hp. Yes, there WERE pipes that produced HUGE numbers. Some did not.
For those of you who have either seen or heard the results, please kindly refrain from divulging details. Al has done an awful lot of work, allow him to enjoy publishing it.
Well Highscore you will be even more surpirsed by the results.. AS i have completly different data done on my dyno with different pipes that are also in the test on my test mule..
In my case the results are lower. in other cases the results are much higher.. So Yes I am dissapointed by the test results that where made.
In august I am at Glendale HD in LA testing 3 Buells and 1 of them will also have our Toprque Hammer, I will post the results here.
I think that there is a difference in the following order they did the test, so the last pipes get all the good numbers and the first pipes not because of the learning and understanding.. That is my explaination.
I end to agree with you Easy as the DDFI-3 with the closed loop learning will change fuel & spark maps, making things different but I dont know if the testing was done with wide bands or O2's disabled ect ect. @ the end of the day im sure all people with different pipes will be curious to see the results Al has come up with.
Hats off to you Al for your hard work, I will be curious to see what my pipe comes up with even though I know what my Hp figures are for my conditions & environment with altered fuel & spark mapping.
