Awesome video! Thanks for sharing and congrats on your podium finish. That track looks so awesome, the MotoGP races should be there instead of Indy for sure.
A lot of guys here could learn a lot from Craig's latest video.
Compare how fast he's riding to how slowly his hands move on the controls. Smoooooth.
Craig could trail brake a good bit deeper in some corners, but notice how pressure is coming off the brake slowly as he's adding lean angle -- he keeps the front committed until it's time to pick the bike up which he does with throttle, SLOWLY and smoothly. That front won't tuck with skills like that. He's got a front contact patch the size of a watermelon with those techniques.
And, I'm sure Craig knows he's not the best on the brakes yet -- several riders pass him going into corners, and we never see the bike wag under brake pressure. But, those skills will come soon with a rider like this, that's a $10 bet I know I won't loose.
Do you see how the bars shake and twitch under gas? What does Craig do? Loosens his hold and adds gas! He knows the bike will find itself and he's just there for the ride.
Hey Craig, what tires and compounds are you running? Nice riding!
Jim - Thanks for the kind words, but you may be overstaing a tad. (keep it up, that $20 is in the mail)
I really do enjoy it though, soo much fun. And yes, from watching the videos I have noticed where i'm really losing time on the brakes. It's amazing how everything looks soo different on the screen then it does while on the track. I was, and still am, learning about what I'm capable of with this weapon and working my way into pushing harder. Road America was my second race weekend, and I'm hoping that the knowledge that I gained will show up in a couple weeks at Black Hawk and I'll have some good results.
I was running Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa Pro - SC2 compound front and rear.
How do you find the brakes ? it's clear in the video you can be faster, but i really lack confidence in my brakes.
I have tried different pads, and have the Erik Buell Racing 5mm finned disc and uprated mounting kit, dot 5.1 fluid, and even got another caliper as i thought it must be mine at fault, but still the same ?
Will try a radial master cylinder set-up once it's back on the road, but if that doesn't sort it, i will have to swap out the whole front end and go with a twin disc set-up.
Tires held up well. The rear, I think, is getting close to done. I will probably use it for practice at BHF and then swap it out.
I got 6 races at RA, 2 practice sessions, and one race at BHF. These were my first set of race tires, so not really sure what to expect for life. The front looks fantastic still.
Hot pressure was 32, 28. I did have a bit of a tear showing up after practice on Saturday morning, went and talked with the Ohlins rep and we made a rebound adjustment which helped clean up the wear.
Brakes - I have the 2015 compound pads in on the stock rotor, and it's got tons of power.
I agree, Craig has some serious talent. VERY impressive for 2nd race weekend ever and first at Road America.
Killer videos Craig! Best I've ever seen. I really enjoyed them; sound and video quality were top notch. Had me cringing for a crash on the first one when it looked like you were running wide on an exit. Camera mounted on the left side of the windshield for that one? LOL
FYI, you can post the wider format embedded youtube vids here using \youtubehd or even \youtubehdd (bigger wide format) in place of the old \youtube formatting tag.}
Thanks Blake. Well, I did run a bit wide....right out onto the rumbles, not exactly where you want to be.
I have the camera right behind the windscreen right on the fairing mount, this spot couldn't have worked out much better. Then I just turn the camera around for the shot back towards me.
Too bad those different formatting tags dont automatically load the HD version off youtube. Blake, thanks for editing my first post with the HD tag. I'll be sure to use that from now on.
I had heard that slicks are supposed to be longer lasting than the DOT's. Just haven't wanted to spend the extra money, not sure if it would cost justify.
Also, I can't run slicks in SuperSport class. Decisions, decisions, decisions.
Considering that I have a very good DOT front mounted up, I'll just stick with another DOT rear. Maybe try a set of slicks at another point.
I do have a second set of wheels, but I had always expected them to become my rain set. Luckily I haven't needed to buy them yet.
My problem with slicks has been lacking the skills to keep them hot enough. If you aren't at expert speeds, you will find you need to go a grade softer than one might normally, and then they don't last at all.
Harder slicks just cold tear to pieces unless you are fast enough to keep them really hot. That said, the one slick I've found to really hold together well is the new Superbike Pro.
So far the longest lasting combo I've found outside of a "street" tire like a Corsa III is the Diablo Supercorsa. I run the SC2 front and SC3 rear in the summer, and SC1 front and SC2 rear when ambient temps are below 90F.
The Buell really tears up tires, IMHO, though, in particular on a point-and-shoot track like my home track. I just absolutely crush fronts into spring and geometry tear, and the rears shred really bad with cold tear, even when coming off track in the 200+F temp range with 120+ wheel temps, where they "should" be operating.
