99491-09Y Repair manual states under 7.10 Alternator page 7-18 to apply LOCTITE 648 (green) to threads of crankshaft nut and tighten to 207-214 ft-lbs or 280-290 Nm. Makes me wonder if some didn't get the Loctite treatment. So don't just tighten the nut. Remove, clean nut and mating threads and use locitie. If you have this problem let us know if there is any sign of the green Loctite. |

If someone out there is going to do this check , could you please post up some picks and brief description of the procedure , and the "nut" in particular we are referring to ? It would be greatly appreciated I am sure !!! Thanks in advance ! Ken |

FWIW, Loctite makes an activator for most of their retaining compounds that 1) cleans things up 2) Accelerates the curing process. It reduces the cure time (of 50% strength) from 6 hours to one hour. later Neil S. |

how much oil came out when you took that cover off? think i'll be checking mine in the next day or so i think i have a torque multiplier in my dads small box(he's an ASE master) my 'normal' torque wrench only goes to 80ftlbs. |

Put the bike in 6th gear, and have a fat chick lean against the rear tire. |

Just like you Froggy, bringing up the FC's again!!! Since 32mm= 1.2598", would a worn 1.250" socket work? Can it be an impact socket versus a thinner wall standard socket? Inquiring mind wants to know. I may try mine this weekend, I've found a 300ft-lb torque wrench and a 600 ft-lb torque wrench (My B-in-law is a retired diesel mech). Later Neil S. |

Yep 1.250" deep well fits fine. Now to figure out how to lock the crankshaft. |

A) I pulled the seat and air box cover to gain access to the alternator leads so I could give some slack. B) not having the release tool for the oil lines I unscrewed the top fitting in the cooler. Note: check these fittings 2 of 4 were loose. C) less than 1/2 cup of oil drained when I pulled the cover with the stator attached. D) as of 12:30 today I can't see a good way to lock the crankshaft, like we did on the Tuber engines. If anyone can help drop me a line. Still thinking. Neil S. |

Here's the instructions from service. You need the correct CRANKSHAFT LOCKING TOOL (Part No. B-48858) for this. There is an older tool that was not heat treated, and won't withstand the 300ftlbs of torque. If I recall correctly the heat treated tools are painted a pale blue. Also start with a new nut. Can't find one, call or email Erik Buell Racing. On to the instructions: Clean the threads of the crankshaft and the crankshaft nut with brake cleaner. NOTE Where LOCTITE 272 (red) is unavailable, use LOCTITE 278(red). 5. Install the flywheel nut. a. Apply LOCTITE 272 (red) to the threads and the mating face of the crankshaft nut. b. Tighten to 285 Nm (210 ft-lbs). c. Backoff the nut counterclockwise approximately 720 degrees. d. Tighten to 285 Nm (210 ft-lbs). e. Backoff the nut counterclockwise approximately 720 degrees. f. Final tighten to 400 Nm (295 ft-lbs). 6. Remove the CRANKSHAFT LOCKING TOOL (Part No. B-48858). Perhaps it would be best for most owners to just take it to a dealer for this kind work. |

Danny - personally that would be fine, but it just won't fly with a Buell/HD service department - they want something official either from Buell or HD. EZ |

What_the, those numbers and your instructions are different than the manual, did you mean 295NM for final tighten for example? As Danny points out you live in East Troy, so I'm guessing you may work at EBR and have some other source of info? |
