i paid 1200 for 2 years ...

btw GET IT!! the warranty should damn near pay itself off the first time you use it (if you do), the way i look at it is: its better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Or take the $1200, put it in a savings account. Short of a total motor failure, there isn't much that will be that expensive. After a few years you will either have used the money, or you will have $1200 plus interest to spend on beer : )

froggy,

i hate to disagree my friend, if you have a clutch leak and a stator then bye bye 1200$$ the stator w/install is north of 800$$ and the clutch leak is around 300-400! and GOD FORBID an engine, w/install it would have cost me 8500$$$ HOWEVER the warranty paid for it ALL...dont chance it, espcially with our current situation with the HD (spit). IF you have the money, give yourself some peace of mind and get it. My warranty has already saved me around 11,000-12,000$$$$$ FWIW

If my stator failed out of warranty I would spend $100 and get it rewound aftermarket. If the clutch failed, it is only $200 for the new seal kit.

I can count the number of 1125 engine failures on one hand, so that dosen't worry me.

You are correct about the situation with HD, which makes the warranty not worth the hassle dealing with the long delays on some parts.

Also, the extended warranty won't cover some of the more common failures like bearings and belts. I will take the $1200 and save it for a rainy day.

I see both sides on this situation, but when I got my clutch leak fixed I saw the charges...It was like 680 bucks. It just made me think.

I agree with Froggy if you have the know how and the tools, get the service man. and do the labor yourself. save the money for better parts form E B R or other aftermarket pieces OEM is not always the best choice.

I had the full 2 + 5 year warranty on my Uly. Wrecked it 7 months after buying the thing, I was only able to get a prorated refund from the warranty even though I still had a year before the extended one kicks in. I am still pissed about that.

my warranty ran out last month, and i debated getting an extended for a moment...

then decided that it would have been a waste of money, and not only that, but i would HATE to give HD any more of my $$ anyways. between paying full price for my bike, and using HDFS to finance my bike... theyre getting more than they need from me already.

im happy to not have to take my bike into the dealership now to get it worked on.

ive had the instrument cluster, a belt, and an '09 clutch cover repaired under warranty. everything else was a recall that would have been repaired anyways. (kick stand springs, 2 new ECM flashes)

looking at the invoice after the dealership does some warranty work on your bike is not looking at the reality of getting something fixed.

i do most all of my labor by myself, and quite a few parts are not dealership specific, so im fairly certain that no matter what happens to my bike now, ill have a contingency plan, and absolutely no worries when it comes time to get it fixed. i have an independent shop that i trust my bike with much more than the harley chrome-installing-ruhtards in the service shop.

not to mention that their parts are overpriced. (think oil drain plug sealing rings)

extended warranty = complete waste of money IMO.

Pros and Cons on the extended warranty.
Just had it checked today for leaking clutch and bad check valve for fuel vent.(leaking fuel) My bike has been in the shop 3X using the extended warranty.
My dealer Surdyke has been more than graceful giving me a loaner bike for up to 21 days one time waiting for parts. Surdyke go's above and beyond. I can't say the same for H-D parts supply management.

alright let me clarify my situation and thinking...

A) I do NOT have time to do my own labor when i go back to college, nor do i trust myself enough to do extensive things (yes i have the manual)

B) Id probably have a different outlook to the warranty if i hadnt used my warranty so much lol.

Dont get me wrong i LOVE my 1125r and would NEVER get rid of it (except for a B2 muahaha) But i just wanted to make sure i was covered incase ANYTHING happened again becuase i do NOT have the money to fix the same amount of things that the warranty fixed for free last time. So better safe then sorry.

I purchased an additional 3 years for my 08'. IMHO it is worth it. Shop around, the prices you stated are retail and you can get it cheaper. Check with some of our sponsors.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I'm on the fence if it was a tuber or XB then no way would I spend the money. Neil who would you suggest to get the warranty from. I guess I never thought you could get the extended warranty from someone other than where i bought it from. Does that present an issue if I had the local dealership fix it?

Keep in mind what an extended warranty is. It is an insurance premium. As such, it is designed (priced) to cover all possible incidents that may occur - statistically speaking.

I am not a fan of extended warranties under normal circumstances and especially now, when we have to rely on a reluctant HD to supply parts and the dealers as middlemen to execute on procuring part and perform the labor.

Some HD dealers and for certain, the HD corporation has little interest in a successful and timely outcome.

If I am not shackled to a pre-paid contract, it opens a lot of additional options to getting my bike fixed in a timely manner.

- ebay, EBraing, American Sport Bike and others for parts
- Myself, dealer and independent shops for labor

I prefer the flexibility of the latter.

another issue is that if you spend money on a warranty you can expect that you instantly lost two years of the warranty. I am dealing with this issue right now. The ESP starts with the original in service date. So if you are coming up to the end of your original factory warranty of 2 years. Buying a 5 year warranty only is an additional 3 years. Doesnt make sense I know but I talked to the ESP hotline for 20 minutes tonight just making sure I understood clearly.

What if you buy a 2 year esp? that means you get no coverage past the factory warranty?

Also, the prices that the op put up, are those good, or can they extended warranties be had for less $$$?

It means that you get two years of coverage after the factory warranty. You would also be immediately eligible for any other benefits of the warranty like tire and wheel if you get that too. All the fliers and paperwork that is at the dealership are tools to be used by the sales person at the time of motorcycle purchase, that is why all the terms include the initial factory warranty period. Most dealers dont do a lot of business selling warranty after the original sale.

I know of two independent shops in my area that can perform the extended warranty repairs...they are both owned by former Hardley techs that lost their jobs when the economy turned...both shops are doing well....the owners had the foresight to contact the warranty company and get set up....so the extended warranty thing is not an absolute Hardley gimmick.

Extended Warranty is a good investment. I've had the clutch update and it was EXPENSIVE. Glad it was covered. Getting ready to go in for the 12K service and knowing I am covered for any mechanical failures (that might be detected during service) is a great feeling. I usually agree with Froggy, even on the weird stuff, but I can't see why anyone would pass up the ESP or wheel and tire package. The WT package saved me more than I paid for it already.

I got the dealer to throw in a W&T package without the ESP when I bought the bike, so for 5 years I am covered from those inconvenient punctures that happen a week before a track day : )

I thought the WT coverage was only 2 years? I'm not sure how that insurance option could be making the company any money...1 Rim or a couple of tires and you've gotten your money out of it easy. Statistically I'd think anyone would eventually have a puncture...I did after only 600 miles. Then again at 2300 something...nothing since then.

$1500 for 3 additional years over the factory warranty is what appears to be average. Front and rear tire once a year (mounted and balanced by HD) would eat that up by itself on an 1125. Throw in a clutch job, maybe a stator and it's worth it.

Are you saying worn tires are covered on the EW?

Only if you get the road hazard option. I opted not to get that, I run Bridgestone tires instead of the Pirelli's.

Worn tires are not covered. If your tire has less than 3/32" tread depth left when you get a nail in it you are going to be paying for the new tire out of pocket

I run Michelins mounted by a non HD shop. Is that supposed to make a difference as to whether or not I get replacement tire? I know that worn tires are not covered, but what about other brands or even the same brand mounted by a different shop? A little more info would be great. Thanks XnoahX for clarifying the tread depth metric.

I guess its boiling down to how many problems the R motor could have long term, vs. the out of pocket cost. Most of the things I have done were done as courtesy from Buell. Other then the weepy clutch deal and turn signals/ mirrors thats it. I guess its a gamble. If I get it I wont need it, If I dont I will have wished I did!! Wonder if Harley is making things harder to get stuff done , when Buell was in the game warranty no problem!

Well if I could go back in time to Dec 07' I would have bought the warranty based on having complete engine failure at 6k miles and my bikes been in the shop for over a month now. I would have loved a free loaner and no money out of my pocket. I'd get an extended warranty just my 3 cents.

I'm in the same boat...have to decide in the next few days if I get the extended warranty.

My issue is that I had an oil consumption issue with a loose valve guide & had the top end rebuilt about 4 months ago. They said I need another 500-1000 miles to seat the rings before they'll look at it again (still using a quart every 1000 miles).

has me leaning towards getting another year, but it's $700 to add another year!
