Use bolts only, 35-37 ft/lbs. Don't re-use the old bolts, they stretch. (Message edited by d_adams on June 10, 2010) |

Dean, I don't think those bolts stretch. 35-37 ftlbs is not a whole lot. Do you happen to know what size the bolts are? I think the reason new bolts is recommended is due to a thread locker that comes on the bolts. Proper cleaning and reapplication of thread locker MAY be good enough. I am sure Erik Buell Racing could confirm/deny this. ac |

I have seen that. It does not state anywhere the REASON for the new hardware. ac |

It's usually a safe assumption on critical parts like that to not re-use them just for that reason. Same thing with cylinder head bolts. Stretch to torque bolts. I'm not an engineer, so at this point I'm just assuming thats the reason for it, but if it were me changing them, I'd spend the extra $15 or whatever it is for those bolts and just replace them. |

I am an engineer and that is why I am curious. I do not THINK these are torque to yield. Generally torque to yield have specs such as: 50 ftlbs plus 90 degrees. I think when you get the new hardware it will have a dab of pre-installed thread lock on it. I believe that to be the reason new hardware is specified. I have changed MANY sprockets on dirt bikes and chain driven street bikes without new hardware. Clean the threads and dab or two of blue. No issues on THOSE bikes. ac |
