I ride my bike pretty hard. It sees high rpms & above 100 pretty much every time it goes out. I still had stator failure at about 4500 miles. Now I'm just over 10k (easier riding) and going strong. I'm debating on whether to do the product update now or wait until it fails again while under warranty. When my stator failed, I started seeing voltage in the 12's & high 11's. It should stay pretty close to 14V. Maybe low 13's at times but rarely if ever 12's. (Message edited by crogers72 on May 31, 2010) (Message edited by crogers72 on May 31, 2010) |

My 09r has had the harness "fix" since new, has about 800 miles on it and I've seen as low as 12.2 volts in traffic on a hot day. Coolant temp was in the 190s. We'll see if the stator fails. I think I might just get it rebuilt using better insulation if it fails. |

Anyone have a fried stator laying around? I contacted the folks at RM Stator about offering parts or rebuild service for 1125s. They have some ideas, but need to have access to fried one. |

Add me to the list,...i was doing fine till harness install. The last couple of days voltage has been dropping just below 12 a couple of times. Either they installed it wrong or my stator was about to die before the install,..cant tell for sue but my CR had 1600 miles on it when i installed the harness. Could it have been damaged so soon ? Taking it to dealer tomorrow. These rebuilding options you guys are mentioning sound like a better solution. Interested to hear if someone with the knowledge does it and fixes the issue. Also just had the clutch cover weep today,...woohoo. When it rains it pours |

i just bought an 09 with 3000KMS on it. before i picked it up the dealer said there is an open recall on it for a wiring harness. i am just waiting for the harness to come in before i take the bike back to them. after reading all of the above posts now i am not sure that i want to bring it back to them????? i have a full 7 year warranty so i am not REALLY that concerned but after reading here if/when my stator fails i will try & get the dead one back & have it rewound from one of the above places. rest assured if i have any issues i will be posting here & will be diligent about specific details. cheers guys! |

pdawg, your dealer is being nice, i wouldn't say anything. It is only supposed to be the harness, but i wouldn't say no to a brand new $700 stator. Once they do that you know that you should be good to go and it shouldn't leave you stranded. |

Tpoppa - Cool idea sourcing a rebuilder. I think it is in our best interest approach a source outside of HD. I would prefer having a heavy duty stator available, rather than waiting to see if HD has any intention of building a revised part. I know that most of the failed stators are exchanged as part of the warranty replacement, but if anyone has access to a fried stator we can get the ball rolling. |

I called an HD tech last friday. They at this time have no plans on improving the Stator or getting a revised stator. The harness is their fix. They will not recall the part and have no plans on anymore R&D at this time. They view the Stator as a non safety hazard. Their reasoning is because the rider gets a CEL warning and a battery light warning and the bike will not just shut off on its own like a catastrophic engine failure. For me I am done worrying about it any longer. I am just going to ride the manufacturer warranty out hopefully the current setup of harness and stator hold up. If it goes bad again I will be looking into some of the research done by Buellers in this thread for a company that will develop the stator correctly. What I really hope for is that Harley gives up on Buell and just sells it off to somebody else hopefully sportbike oriented. I will be waiting to see what happens when Erik Buell comes back and starts making production street bikes again. Maybe this Stator issue is a blessing in disguise since Harley I know has figured everything financially and it would cost to much to do anymore R&D than necessary on the Buell brand parts or otherwise. |

i had a great talk with my service advisor. i am trying to get the stator that they remove/replace. i have been up-front & told him that i would like to keep it so i can send it out to be re-wound, re-insulated, re-vamped, copied, improved, etc, etc. i know that the 1125s will be around as long as there are enthusiasts like us who appreciate them. it would be in everyones best interest to just let us have a dead or dying one so we can take it upon ourselves to fix it PROPERLY once & for all. i will keep everyone here posted with what i can come up with. i'm pretty sure that HD wont give a crap if some 'new tech' accidentally throws out a dead stator that was replaced under warranty...wink, wink! heres hoping! paulie |

Remember that HD might have a warranty deal with Rotax on those parts. HD might have to send them back to BRP |

Well I have had the new harness update on my 2009 1125R for past few months with no problems. Now I'm setting on side of road 300 miles from home on first day of a four day trip with my stator burned up. |

Well that sucks man! It is safe to say that Erik Buell Racing explanation was spot on. Once you get the new stator you should be good for awhile. 6500 miles and counting on new stator and new harness installed at the same time for me. |

I had a little over 10000 on bike before harness update and have put about 1300 on bike with harness update. Most of my riding since bike was new has been with rpms under 5000. I haven't had any problems at all. I watched my volt meter for several hours today with it staying above 13. Even when idleing. I pulled up to redlight and smelled something strange that was new. Then battery light and engine came on. I checked gauge and it showed 11.7. I knew I was in trouble. I watched it for several min and it wasn't charging. |

Mine is slowly failing also...i got the harness with 5000 miles on my bike now i have 6300 and at a idle in traffic it will drop to 12.1 volts and only charge at 13.4 max when over 5k rpm...So now im trying ride it as much as i can in town so it will just fail here soon so i can get it fixed under warranty. |

Well its official. I just got the bike back to Alabama from NC and the stator is gone. The parts are on backorder so who knows when it will be repaired. I checked so yall would know. I put 1000 miles on the bike after the harness was changed when it broke. |

I did some more riding today in town and this is how mine is acting...when i first fire it up for the first 15-20 min it will charge decent at idle about 13.5 - 13.8 and driving it will show 14.1. Now after the 20 minutes or so it won't charge at idle at all...seems the longer it sits at idle the voltage keeps dropping i had it down to 12.0 even today after 2 minutes of idling with the fans on. And while driving it will only charge at 13.3 to 13.7ish. Called dealer today they can't get me in till the 17th for them to look at it. Then they will first order the parts then. So who knows how long my bike will be down for now that i hear the stators are on back order. Better than finding out the hard way on a road trip though! |

So...who can explain how the voltage should display when idling etc. if the stator and new harness are working as expected? It seems like the voltage would have to drop at idle if the 3rd leg of the harness is being shut off by the relay. It sounds like post-harness stator failures are still occurring. I know of one failure of a new stator that was installed at the time of the harness upgrade. |

I would think it would charge enough at idle to support the fans ect....if i would of left my bike keep idling tonight it would have killed the battery totally. I know someone who just had his 3rd stator go south today which 2 of them were after the harness install. |

@ Pdawg1970 - how did you get the 7 year warranty? I asked my dealership and they didn't know anything about it. They are giving me the standard 2. Was is a standard HD/Buell product or a 'dealership' warranty? After reading all these stories about recalls, malfunctions etc, i figure it may be worth getting the extended warranty if the price is right. |

Bigschwerm, I too am having the same voltage problem and i too wont get my bike in til the 17th, i am very curious to see what is causing it, I do know for sure that its NOT the voltage regulator since i just put a new one in to see if that would correct the problem and it did not. |

It has to be the stator going bad...when my bike gets to operating temp (hot) the stator slowly fades...must of slowly toasted it in the first 5000 miles....unless someone else has a explanation why it would do this? |

My '09 was in the process of failing a few weeks ago. I stopped at a gas station to get some liquid refreshment (I live in Phoenix), and she wouldn't start up again. Dealership picked it up, and a few days later said new harness was in and that problem was solved. 3/4 of the ride home...engine light pops on. Returned her to the dealership, and they ran her through a few tests, eventually replacing the ECM. She was now "running like an animal", and I again rode her 3/4 of the way home and...engine light. I had noticed that upon leaving the dealership my acceleration was choppy, but figured I was imagining things. Nope. Returned to the dealership the next day, and within a few days they had replaced the fuel pump, put nearly 40 miles on it, and said it was running great. I picked her up from the dealership, and she was running smooth, even at higher RPMs. I was running at around 90 MPH in 4th for most of the ride, then...engine light. It was at this point I opted to take it to a different dealership. En route to said dealership, she completely died on the off ramp. Thankfully it didn't die while I was running at 75 MPH as the back tire got a bit squirrely, even at about 40 MPH. Tech at the new dealership said they have been seeing stators go shortly after the new harness is put in. Should I request that they put another new harness in along with the new stator? I'd almost feel greedy as I already got a new ECM and fuel pump from the first dealer...lol. Forgot to mention she is at around 4200 miles since I got her in December. Somewhat of a gift from Harley as they switched her out for my "07 XB12STT under the lemon law. That thing had a service sheet stack about an inch thick. Hopefully this one doesn't follow suit... just picked up the bike with the new stator and harness... voltage drops to the 12s when idling at a light and hangs out in the 13s when running...14 when youre really reving it was a cool evening so i dont think the fans were on when i was idling this is very disconcerting |

I spoke to Buell Customer Service today. They got an explanation of the charging harness from one of the Buell Techs. Thought I would share... Per the Buell Tech, the harness upgrade is to limit the charging ability. He felt that seeing voltage occasionally dip into the 12s was reasonable. And didn't necessarily mean the stator was failing. Agree? Disagree? For those of you who have had a stator failure...were there any symptoms leading up to the failure? |
