So my head gasket was leaking (a previous thread established that this is unusual; still, it's what the tech diagnosed, so let's move on). Now I'm hearing that they're "having problems with an engine bolt and it's going to need to be drilled and tapped out." First question: is this an acceptable fix for an engine that is still under (extended) warranty? And second, will tapping cause any issues later in the engine's life? Thanks! |

If they do it correctly you won't have any issues at all. We have engines at work with thread inserts in them, many with thousands hard hours on them. What engine bolt? Are they planning on thread-serting it or fixing it another way? |

I'd ask them if they're going to drill, tap and then use a thread insert. I'd be a little unhappy if they drilled, tapped and then either used an oversize bolt or relied on the swarf from the damaged bolt to hold the new one (which is effectively what they'd be dong without an insert). I've had to do that on lots of older bikes, never had any issues - if done right |

For me it would depend on what bolt hole they were fixing, if it was say a rocker cover bolt hole i could live with it, but if it was say a head bolt, I would have issues |

"So"....how does this fit (?) First...just be happy that they told you about the problem...rather than covering it up and not saying a word! As for the drilling and removal. If they drill and use an easy-out, you should be fine. If it's a hole that see's a lot of very hot heat cycles (like the exh. stud on an XB), they most likely have to retap or use an insert. If the person is good at drilling and uses a drill guide, you might get away with just cleaning the threads. If the person isn't so adept at removing the remainder of a fastener, then yes, at least a heli-coil (or solid insert) needs to be used. Mike |

So I asked, "How does that work? You drill it out and use a bigger bolt?" They said they used an insert. I've learned not to give the right answer in the question. |

Good questioning technique! |
