We went to the HD stealership where I'll be needing to get my bike serviced if it ever needs work, today, and picked up my 2010 tail light, and grabbed an oil filter for my first oil change. Oil filter alone- $30. What the hell. We went and talked to the service guys, my husband wanted their recommendations for oil. (of course they tried to push Screaming Eagle oil). The service guy said he really recommended having the very first service done by the dealership. OK, fine, so whats the cost, we ask? $349. But, "in addition to the oil change, we'll check the bike over for anything that might be loose or rattling". Um, yeeeeeah, OK. Needless to say that won't be happening. Are all Harley dealerships like this or am I just lucky? $30 oil filter? $349 oil change/service? Ouch. | ||

$349 is high, but the bit about searching the bike over for loose parts is spot on, actually. These bikes shed parts like a leper at a break dancing contest. It's not really just Buells, but all big bore twins have a real nasty habit of just vibrating stuff loose. I recommend you go through the bike from time to time and tighten everything back up to spec. The bodywork fasteners are notorious for backing out. | ||

She is Canadian, everything is higher priced. The filters are $20US here. First service is normally in the $200's, so factoring in the higher Canadian cost, sounds right. Buy your filter and oil and do it yourself cheap. | ||

Us Canadians are at the mercy of Deeley. All parts are about 50% more then in the USA. They usually claim it's import duties and taxes or difference in the values of the dollars but most of the time that's just BS. Our money is almost at par and Deeley hasn't adjusted their prices to reflect this. I support my servicing dealer when I can (including buying 3 bikes) and giving them some of my service work but I buy most of my accessories online or when I'm in the USA. | ||

I was quoted $325 plus tax by a local dealer in NJ. Same thing-oil change plus "check the bike over". Didn't mention anything about checking for recalls or latest ecm maps or anything(i know its good to ask but maybe they could say this is added so the price doesn't seem so high?). | ||

My oil filters cost 10.95 at my HD dealer in Canada. $30? Who would pay that? I paid 60 or so for 3 litres of 20w50, one litre of formula +, an oil filter, primary gaskets, and a few o-rings and I thought I was getting ripped off. $30 for a filter?? I'd make my own out of coffee filters first.. | ||

At my local dealer in Connecticut it is $315 for 1st service and a four week wait. So ya, I'm doing it myself. $5 for the 10 cent aluminum drain plug washer made me laugh | ||

-Tucson HD quoted $350, 620mi service w/oil change, when all is said and done, it came out to $200. I was stoked that it wasn't $350.  | ||

I had mine done last week at the HD dealer in Allen Texas. They charged me $148. The listed labor on the 600 mile service is $78, at least according to my invoice. I think that is one hour. | ||

My dealer wanted like $360, the same as a VROD service. I bought my filter and Amsoil from them and did the service myself. | ||

$370 at my dealer. I only had them do it to make sure that I am good if I should run into any warranty/recall issues in the next year (zero so far, knock on wood). I'm looking forward to doing it myself in the future, with a smile knowing how much I'll be saving over that rate. | ||

The 620-mile service is nothing more than an oil change and checking parts on the bike to make sure everything is secure. I can't understand how giving the bike a good once-over would be more than an hour of labor, and the oil change itself is about a 15-minute affair. Worried about your warranty? Take a few pictures of you doing the 620-mile oil change and save them. | ||

When I asked around in Washington, DC area, the price for 600mi service ranged from $135 to $400. I naturally went with $135 at Battley Cycles in Maryland. Battley also services BMW & Ducati. They were grandfathered in - the only HD dealer that services BMW & Ducati. I asked the service guy why the price discrepancy. He did not know why others charge more. Their service price is based on the price that HD has set for the 600mi service (which they call it first 1000mi service). The service should cost no more than 0.90 hour of labor + parts. Mine came to $85.50 for the labor, $20 oil filter w/rings, $23.80 for 4 QT of HD 20W50, plus $5.99 in supplies (washers). The total was $135.29 + sales tax of $2.99. | ||

Oh believe me, they can kiss my arse, we'll be doing services ourselves unless something goes kaboom. I only paid $30 for the first filter because 1- the dealership is a 3 hour drive from us and we were there anyways, and 2- I wanted to be prepared for the first oil change now, thus giving me time to find a source online. My husband is a mechanic so he's capable of doing all the general service stuff, thankfully. I'm not in a hurry to give Harley Davidson one more penny of my money, ever, if possible. | ||

I was surprised at how the oil had seemed like it had the consistency of water after I changed mine for the first service. | ||

I remember my 620 mile service I paid around $250 without oil change. Over $300 with. I dont go to that dealer anymore and I bought the bike there. The one near my house is more like it. Around $150. Anyways I had an Yamaha Fz1 first service was a $100 bucks no oil change. That included chain adjustment!! Harley doesnt even have to adjust nothing on our belt drive since we have an idler pulley | ||

If you can stand waiting a week or so for your filter, theres always good deals on Ebay. I order a couple at a time and just keep them stocked usually. My local HD dealership wants an arm and a leg for the filters since Buell went under. |
