After reading that several riders had found their oil levels to be out of spec, I decided I had better check mine (new CR just hit 120 on the odom today).

I certainly don't trust the dealer to have prepped it correctly. When I took delivery my bike, the guy pointed vaguely at the tach indicated not to exceed 3-4K rpm during the breakin. You can imagine how that makes me feel about the dealership's knowledge of Buells.

Anyway, I idled it in the garage for 3 mins (on rear stand) and let is sit for 3 mins and the oil level was at the overfill mark. Not good, but I then noticed the manual says to ride it until warm (10 mins +), then do the 3 min idle and 3 min wait. I did that and the oil level is half way up the dipstick.

Needless to say, I am not feeling good about this, but since I can't really drain "a little" oil without scalding my hand and expect to get the drain plug back in, I am gonna wait the 4 hrs min stated in the manual and do the cold check. I am curious what it will say, but I am resigned that I need to drain some oil after it cools.

Comments welcome!

You have oil. Ride it the rest of the 480 miles to the 600 service.

Drain oil, replace filter. Add 3 quarts.

Call it good.

I forgot to mention, I do plan on changing the oil at 200 miles, although I understand that it isn't called for until 600.

AC,

Yes, I am afraid I am. I wanna get it within the acceptable limits. If the hot check was accurate (less that ideal procedure), it is WAY overfull. Like I said it was halfway up the dipstick. When I removed the dipstick, I could see oil (with a flashlight) 1 to 1-1/2 inches down from the filler hole.

Am I worrying too much? Probably, but better than not caring at all I think. I know we all have different comfort levels.

Crazy,
If you are worried and planning on dumping the oil in 80 miles, just dump it now.

Fill it back up with 3 quarts and call it happy.

I think it's somewhat human nature to way overthink things when it comes to expensive purchases. None of us want a broken item or damaged when it's still new and beautiful.

You have the equivalent of a beautiful weekend left of riding before the first service. that's not very long. I strongly believe you will be fine till then.
