My cr does 80 mph in 6th gear at 5000 rpm on my 50 mile commute each way I can sit at 5000or lower for over 25 minutes. But as soon as I put it in the 6000 range the vibes go away and the bike gets smoother what it has to do with the stator I have no idea. I do however know that riding below 5000 rpm had three stator failures. and riding above 5000 rpm makes the bike feel mo betta |

My comment about my wallet suffering was not due to mpg or tires but tickets that cost 300 a pop. Generally when I go over 6k I am in 6th and hitting triple digits. I have a falco with the 1000cc rotax engine and it does not stutter or have any problem running from 1.5k to 5k, it has done 50k miles so far without a hitch. It was my daily commuter but I decided to do a major over haul just to make sure it makes it another 50k. So the CR took over the job as my main mode of transportation and unfortunately it fell a little short. |

Because theres people that commute daily on these bikes. Well you bought the wrong bike for your commute. If you were looking for 45+ MPG and 146HP, as the proverbially saying goes "you can't have your cake and eat it too." Sorry, I just don't get guys bitching about low MPG with the 1125 motor. Do you think Viper or Ferrari owners complain about getting atrocious gas mileage? I do believe the Ducati 1198 is in the same ballpark on MPG. Lucky we have a big tank as there were reports about Duc riders seeing the fuel light turn on UNDER 100 miles on the tank. Did you read my post ? I did not complain about MPG. I was only saying that i shift at about 6k and cruise between 4.5 and 5.5 in city traffic. That seems to be the happy spot for the bike for me. If the stator fails because of that then ill just swap the stator. As for your comment about buying the wrong bike,..well i guess a silly comment like that doesn't really need an answer. |

it should work below 5,000 rpm...does any other motorcycle have this kind of problem below 5,000? probably not. |

> does any other motorcycle have this kind of problem below 5,000 Ever been on a Japanese 600cc bike and cruising at 5k RPM? If you go WOT, it's going to take you 30 seconds to get ANYTHING out of that bike. They are absolutely anemic at that engine speed. Is that a design flaw? Or, just the nature of a motorcycle that doesn't make great power except between 10 and 14k RPM? I'm not suggesting there's not an issue with the stator. I'm just noticing that a lot of the complaints about the bike here would go away if riders would just *ride* the bike with a little spirit. These things truly do seem to prefer having the piss beat out of them! Like that crazy chick you dated in college that always liked it rough... Give it to her! As for tickets, 6k on the 1125r isn't going to get anyone's attention, IMHO. If you are using a street-legal exhaust, there's still more gear clatter at 6k than any other kind of noise. A Ford F150 Diesel almost makes more racket at idle than the Buell at 6k! |

Yes, but we are comparing two different things again... The jap bike will run all day at 5k as far as I know... I could be wrong. It does not make any power down there but that does not create a mechanical issue. Your talking about the powerband. There should be NO mechanical or system failures within the ride able rpm range, which on my CR is about 2,600-Redline. if the stater gets too hot or does not create enough power down at 3k... That's a prob to me. But I haven't had any issues with mine yet and I've got 4k of commuting on her. There was no tag on my bike that said I had to ride the piss out of it everytime I got on the seat. I do about half and half. Seems froggy would be the guy to have issues because he is like an MPG god on his bikes. |

I was warned by my mechanic (who is a Buell racer) that some people were reporting low batteries and low charging at below 5K. He even called Buell (before HD axed them) to let them know about it. First year of anything is going to have some issues. That's just the way it goes with these machines. Compared to my X-1 this has been a much better developed and supported machine. |

Yep, thats why this potential issue caught my attention. It sounds like something that wont rear its head till the summer, and I don't like to ride when its above 70 degrees so we shall see. Its nothing I will worry about anyway, it sounds like a simple problem and a simple fix. |

Being that I have an 08 and an 09, both have different stators. On my 08 which has lower output stator, I have noticed I am more likely to get the battery light to come on. I haven't done anything real high draw yet (just a heated suit), but even with more goodies running on my 09 the only time I ever get the battery light is sitting with the key on engine off for at least a few minutes. |

yeah it works. Below 5000 rpm the old stators did not. |

My 08 gets the battery light if I leave the key on for more than 10-15 seconds before starting. For what was marketed as a "trackable street bike" instead of a "streetable track bike," the street bits are somewhat lacking. I've had the battery light go on when idling in traffic before. |

This whole debate is amazing. This is why Buell is FIXING the problem - because it SHOULDN'T HAPPEN. I give them credit for a) acknowledging the problem, b) taking the time to research and develop a fix, and c) making it available to the owners at no charge (no pun intended). If you are curious about your personal bike and whether it falls within the date range, check your frame, it has a production month. If it's before the date mentioned in the bulletin, it probably applies to your bike. If your bike was built after the bulletin date, you should be fine. If your frame has the same month (September '09) as the bulletin, get in touch with your dealer with the COMPLETE vin number - and I emphasize COMPLETE (should I say it again? COMPLETE) - and they can check it against H-Dnet. If you "don't like" or "don't trust" your dealer, email it to me at jgoetz@hdoffrederick.com and I can run it for you. Again - the COMPLETE number, all 17 characters. I'm not gonna steal your bike, or your credit history, or your firstborn male offspring by having the VIN. And it is the ONLY way to check. |

Every bike I see I write the VIN down and the license plate number so I can use them to get rich. So far it hasnt worked. I dont know why people protect these things that are publicly displayed |

No, no, the problem isn't a problem, it's a "Buell Thing" and you should either ride your bike harder or sell it if you don't "get it" - and if you're using it to commute, you deserve what you get. Or so I understand from this thread.

My take was that if your having an issue, get this fix done, but I tend to skim over posts people saying what they think is right or wrong. |

"The ECM will also receive an update that will include the proper programming to monitor vehicle charging so that if the bike's battery voltage gets too low it will keep the third stator leg on until the battery is properly charged. A lot of testing went into making sure this won't affect your overall charging systems." Wow... Do I see is a can of worms here? What about all of these race ecus running out on the street. Granted you can put your stocker ecu in, get the update done and ecu update, then swap your race ecu back in and risk charging system failure. What about all the custom tunes? Will this update only change the stator outputs or will we have a new fuel map also? Possible or not, something to think about... |

Yesterday on the way home I was thinking about all this 5k rpm stuff so I was riding in 2nd gear on the freeway. I think it was around 7-8k rpm at 70mph. Did you know the bike will wheelie doing that if you want it to? |

If it's an EBR ECM...just tell them when you order that you have/don't have the update to the charging system. I'm *pretty sure* they know what code to put in there to make it all work |

I called Latus HD in Portland gave them my VIN and they said all was current except the stator issue. The parts are on order. I asked if there was any problem with using the bike and they said the only risk was running the battery down and to keep it on a trickle charger. What is all of this talk about stators going bad? dannybuell |

Danny, they might not fully understand the problem then. The problem is that the stator is overheating under certain RPM ranges. Once the stator has overheated to the point of failure it starts to not function at full output. So while they are partially right in that your battery will get run down, it is a symptom of a problem and not the problem itself. |
