Okay what weight of oil comes in the 1125r from the factory and is it possible to use non-harley brand to top off my oil. I did the oil check and the level isn't even showing on the stick at all. I checked it 3 different times. Just don't want to ruin my bike. So I want to top it off with some oil as to not damage it. My reason for asking is I am 100 miles (one way) from a dealership. Thank you for any help. Oh I have 61 miles on the bike so not quite ready for an oil change. |

you aren't going to ruin your bike. oil is oil. Dont get the cheap stuff... but you dont need gold. Its a rotax engine.. so harley brand isn't going to make it run any better or worse. I've used Valvoline motorcycle 10w30 in every motorcycle ive ever had.. including this one. also DONT fill it too full.. I would fill it up to 1/2 way on the dipstick all the time, and if would spill out the top of the engine... making a huuuge mess. i thought my motor was bad. only my 2cents |

Hey Aplejuce... Do you use 10w-30 or 10w40 oil? and if u use 10w-30 oil, any clutch slipping issues? |

are you doing cold oil or hot oil check? Check out the main page above the thread listing. links to buells owners manuals are right there. https://www.buell.com/om/99480-09Y_en/file-6.asp#hdtopic006397 dannybuell (Message edited by dannybuell on February 25, 2010) |

Have done both checks hot and cold. So does anyone know if I use the 10w-40 oil and the factory uses 20w-50 it shouldn't cause any harm anything right? |

Do you have the Owner's Manual? How are you checking the oil, exactly? |

Redbuell, You aren't likely to harm the engine by mixing grades, but if at all possible, I would try and top off with the same grade. I was told by my dealer that they come with 20W50 when delivered. |

10w30? How many miles do you get out of a motor? I've found that keeping the bike upright is the only way to get consistent results. I let it idle for 3 minutes and shut it off, then check. The bike remains upright the whole time. You can place a 2x4 under the kickstand if you don't have a rear stand. |

sorry for the confusion when saying 10w-30 that was just the first number that stuck in my typing fingers, More then likely I will be using 10w-40 because of the climate I am in. And to answer your question about how many miles, I really hope to see from one coast to the other. |

Be careful about over filling. It's the one procedure that is all Buell. Moosestang nailed it. You have to have the bike running for 3 minutes perfectly level and upright and I find I need to let it drain for another 3 minutes to get a good reading. Not letting it idle upright long enough or drain long enough will give you a WTF reading and then you'll likely over fill the bike. Mine uses absolutely no oil that I can detect. It has about the same level from the time I fill to the time I need to change it. Then again I rarely rev the engine over 7K RPM. I hear that high revs will blow some oil out the breather into the airbox. So check again and then use a good grade of 20-50 and when you finish the break in and change the oil go with 20-50 synthetic. |

I agree with using the 20w-50 oil. Will do another check today since it is sunny and will be above freezing (for a short time) today. So thanks again and will post findings then. |

Silkolene 20w 50 fully syn, its made my box smoother and i have always used silkolene with confidence. But i too have problems checking the bloody oil levels, its so hit and miss, but dont leave it more than 4-5k between changes so i know how much i put in, always roughly the same back out |

ive always used 10w30 in my jap bikes.. but if owners manual says thicker, i will put 20w50 in i like this all-american bike too much!! i usually check the oil when i get to a gas station, I just stay sitting on the bike.. so i dont need to prop it up or anything. Has never used any oil, but i still check |

Did you check it when the bike was on the kickstand or straight up after idling for 3 minutes then waiting 3 minutes straight up? |
