the last couple of times cranking over engine before riding i noticed a quick flash of the word "volt" or "voltage" on the LCD screen. it doesnt stay on long enough for me to read entire message. any thoughts to this message? i didnt see anything in the manual about it. i charge my battery on a regular basis since the weather hasnt been worthy of riding in lately.

You can either use a multimeter to measure the voltage across the battery terminals directly, or see what the instrument cluster says in diagnostic mode. To enter diagnostic mode, hold down both the Mode and Toggle buttons while turning the key to the on position. Then scroll through the various readings.

That being said, the static voltage under essentially a no-load condition doesn't tell you much about the life of the battery. When running the starter, a healthy battery's voltage will remain relatively high, whereas a dying battery will show a large drop in voltage between no-load and high-load (starter cranking). You can't use diag mode to see that, but you could use a multimeter on the battery to verify voltage while cranking.

I keep the bike on a battery tender if I won't be riding for more than a day or two. Given that, I have still had problems with maintaining adequate battery charge. A few weeks ago I was riding backroads with high beams on and my Buell heater grips on the low setting. Since it was backroad riding, the rpm spent most of the time above 5K. That should provide plenty of charging current even with the load of the high beams and grips. It obviously didn't because the battery warning light came on when I came to a stop. I had to rev the engine a bit to keep it running! The fans running all the damn time even though it is 50F outside doesn't help matters one bit.

Basically the battery and charging system on these bikes are inadequate. Hopefully your battery passes the test.

Mine does the same thing. I THINK the message states "Low system voltage", not positive though. It flashes fast and doesn't leave a code.
