Like many parts of the country, Texas has been getting some cold weather. The other morning (Friday) it was 14 degrees. I decided since the roads were dry, I was going to take the CR to work. I started it, let it "warm up" for a few minutes. During that time both the engine and fuel warning lights came on; and stayed on. On the way to work, after about 20 minutes of riding, the lights finally went off. On the way home, I saw a nearly identical thing happen. This weekend it was warmer (30-40's) and didn't see the the problem again. Can it really be too cold to ride the 1125? I can't find any reference in either the service manual or owner's manual on both the fuel and engine warning lights coming on at the same time, so I'm not sure if that really means something else or not. Anybody else seen this? Wayne |

it is a software error in the instrument cluster. mine has been on backorder for a month or so. i called today they came off backorder yesterday |

So the problem is the entire instrument cluster? hmm... So far I've only seen it in extremely cold conditions. Did yours do it any other time? Wayne |

I've been experiencing the same. Hdwrenchtx, is this considered a warranty repair and therefore free? |

I know here in ohio if I go down a highway all geared up my cluster coolant indicator sometimes at idle is 162. Then while riding it flickers in and out of the cold message. So ya it could be too cold.Nothing that a piece of ducktape cant fix.Tape off the front of the radiators. |

Wayne, mine also happens when the fuel indicator light comes on while riding but only when the weather is cold. |

I have ridden down to 9deg F in Washington State w/o any problems besides some cold hands. |

mine only does it in the cold. you need a new IC most likely. it should be covered under warranty. I was going to say "will be covered" but I dont want to take responsibility for it. lol |

You can easily install the Uly heated grips on the 1125r...even has a spot for the switch! |

Tbones... it's not the lack of heated gripes that bothers me, it's having two indicators on at the same time neither of which seem appropriate for what I'm seeing (or not seeing as the case may be). Wayne |

I started to regurgitate the long conversation that Zac3Mac and I had about this subject, however I stopped to PM him to see if he can post directly. He is very knowledgeable. |

This happens to mine also. Waiting on a new cluster to get to the dealer. Mike Long Island, NY 09 XB12X Red/Black 09 1125CR Black/White 06 VRSCR Blue/Silver |

I got to park my 08 outside one night to see if it happens, I get it all the time now on my 09 when it is below 30°F. Like everyone said, its an issue with the cluster, so don't lose any sleep over it. |

I've ridden down to about 18-20F with no problems (other than the obvious freezing my arse off). |

There are basically two causes for the LFL and CEL issue. IF your IC shows LFL and CEL after you get to operating temp, the sensor(part of the fuel pump) has drifted out of range and needs replacing. A simple sensor resistance check will confirm this. I have a new fuel pump here at the shop, waiting for a space on the lift to do it. IF you get CEL and LFL right after starting and it goes away as soon as you get to op-temp, it is a bug in the IC's firmware. The IC can't be flashed and needs to be swapped out. The new firmware prevents the IC from polling sensors AFTER shut-down. I am expecting this step after I get the new pump in. Zack |

my CR has been doing this also since winter set in . Does it really need to be fixed? I really hate taking my bike in for work unless I have to . Is this hurting anything? Rick |

Just my low fuel light comes on when its cold. It goes off after maybe a minute or two. It might do it when its warm out too, but not as much I guess. I havent had enough warm weather to see. |

I really hate taking my bike in for work unless I have to . Is this hurting anything? Now that's the real question as I think many feel as you do about taking the bike in, especially now. If you reference Zack's post, #1 seems pretty benign. Could number 2 cause the motor to run in cold startup enrichment mode (ie very rich) if the sensor drifts far enough? I defer to the experts. |

the only problem with it that i see is that your low fuel light is always on and you never know if it is really running low on fuel (Message edited by hdwrenchtx on January 11, 2010) |

Yea, that would be my guess too. That is why I fill up at 180 miles regardless, even though it usually has a little over a gallon left. |

I hope you guys are right. At least at this point in time, mine only stays on for a few minutes after startup. No biggie. However, it would be nice to know what sensor is affected and what role(s) the sensor plays. So we didn't have this problem last winter cause the clusters that are causing it weren't around, correct? My memory is that this wasn't an issue last year. |

The way I see it according to the Buell ETM..The LFL has nothing to do with fuelling. The I/C supplies 12v through low fuel lamp and the fuel level sender supplies ground to the circuit to illuminate the LFL. There is nothing else on this circuit. If the CEL and LFL are both illuminated it "could" be possible either (1) a fault code stored if so will need to be addressed (2) a faulty fuel level sensor causing both lamps to illum as normal operation of I/C... Resistance readings for fuel level sensor Quoted from the "diagnostic tips" Buell ETM fuel level sensor description and operation... "The fuel level sensor will not show a resistance reading if the sensor is working properly and the fuel level is above the sensor" In the diagnostic flow chart this is the test as follows "resistance at the fuel pump terminals 86-87 850-1200 ohm with sufficient fuel in the tank". Try to figure that out....take it to the dealer....or don't worry about it if there are no codes stored. |

Froggy, As far as fueling is concerned, Intake Air and Engine Coolant are the only temperature sensors the ECM uses. |

Ok, stupid question, have you guys tried charging the battery. I also have this problem occasionally, but not recently. I thought it was a problem where the signal voltage is out of spec. The newer ECMs don't check fuel till the bike warms up. The older ECMs will check fuel immediately after starting when the battery voltage is low from cranking. Combine the cranking with a cold battery that is not fully charged and the voltage drops low enough to cause the error. I am pulling this out of my memory from older threads that I have read. |

Is it possible that the amount of Fuel at low temp (cold start enrichment) is not enough, and when the bike warms up it is and the light go's off....... |

I was thinking the latest Tech Tip had the resistance range at 850-1400 ohms. At any rate, mine is showing 2200 Ohms at 72 dF and Tech Services told Max to replace the fuel pump. I got some good info from a trusted source about the firmware bug. Firmware revs to fix this are 6.2 for 08/09 and 7.1 for 2010 models. The rev is on a tag on the back of the IC and can be seen at the end of data in the 09/10 IC when in Diag Mode. My IC is an 09 IC (my original had a bad switch under the "Toggle" button) and it has a 6.1 rev so I am expecting to replace that too before the end of my warranty in April. Hope this helps. Zack |
