I was riding in December here in KY. Left for the holidays and didn't get my oil changed before I left. I figured when I got back I could do it first thing. Cold front moved in, won't start in this single digit weather. Is it alright just to change the oil without letting the old warm up and cycle through? It will only be stored till march. Thanks |

Warm it up - especially at those temps! Otherwise you won't get all the old oil out. You may need to charge the battery but it still should start. Maybe a couple space heaters would help? GL! |

wait till march if you put new oil in it now it can still get contaminated just sitting in the motor .change it fresh when you start using it again |

Ride it, you can get the remaining 400 odd miles till your next service done in a decent afternoon. |

i disagree with riding it until 620. change the oil and filter. warm the engine with electric heater or lamp, charge battery, start and run. if you have a rear stand carefully let it run in gear if you can't ride it. even if all you can do is get the engine warm without running, i would still change the oil. to me the 1st change is the most important. tim |

I live downtown and my bikes are in a parking garage. I looked yesterday for outlets to run a space heater. I don't think that will be an option. Are you saying to change the oil then run it for a bit? or vice-versa? Its supposed to warm up to mid 30's next week, so there is a chance of me starting it then. IT would probably be the easiest for me to leave it til the spring and then change the oil firs thing. Would that hurt any? Thanks for the input. |

Change the oil and filter after warming the bike up, if nothing else it will get rid of the breakin moly stuff which many owners have reported when changing the oil for the first time, I changed the oil and filter in my 1125R at 200 miles, in the cold months when the bike is not being ridden I have often wondered if it is better to start the engine now and again or just leave it till I intend to start riding the bike again and then change the oil before use. Its the old argument - if the bike is started often and not ridden there is a risk of fouling the plugs and also not burning contamination out of the oil because the engine will not get hot enough or if you don't run up the engine regularly is there a danger of rusting in the bores, static brg corrosion (brinelling) etc? any thoughts anybody? With other bikes in the past I have removed the plugs and turned the engine over on the kickstart/elec start once a week - but this is not feasible with the 1125R becuase you can't get the plugs out quickly. I would just leave it alone for now ... You'll get lots of opinions / insight, so do what makes you feel good. I've stored collector cars for years at a time (such as an '82 Corvette CE with 450 original miles, an '89 Turbo Trans Am with 250 miles, etc), so I'm an advocate of maintaining things even when they aren't being driven. But overdoing isn't all that smart either ... But it does cost more. Mike |

I did my first oil change with 40 miles on the bike. Much of the break-in happens within the first few miles on a new engine. You ought to get that metal and assembly lube out of there and replace it with fresh oil. But I don't see a problem with waiting until the weather gets warmer before starting the bike. The existing oil isn't hurting anything just sitting in it. |
