I heard the 09's have a gear indicator and that would be helpful on trackdays will it work on a 08. Do the 09's have a extra signal wire to the gauges or not. |

No, the software in the cluster calculates it based on your speed and RPM. If you change gearing, its not going to work. |

so froggy the 09 gauges will work if I keep stock gearing |

If you have an 08 R and swap for a 09 R cluster, you get the gear indicator. Obviously if you change the gearing, it's going to throw off the speed, since it's calculated from the transmission/clutch and engine speed. There's a Hall effect sensor on top of the clutch that reads it, right side of the case, under the rear exhaust header. Only one bolt holds it in. I think the ECM does the calculations based on known gearing in the transmission and the final drive. |

that must be the way, when you pull the clutch in, the gear indication goes away until you release it again |

gearing? i don't see how swapping to chain and sprocket set-up would make a difference in what the cluster thinks the bike's speed is. or were you referencing altering the transmission gears. XB's have a primary chain, but the 1125's? .... prey tell how? |

if you switch to chain drive and keep the stock gear ratio the speedometer will still be accurate. if you change final gear ratios the speedometer will not be accurate anymore. the sensor for the speedo is before the drive sprocket so it doesn't know what happens behind it is the simple explanation. tim |

The cluster uses math. It references vehicle speed versus engine speed, checks a data table, and that tells it what gear "must be in use" in order to have that value. Change final drive ratios, your engine speed no longer matches RPM the way the table says it should, so the gear indicator will be either incorrect or nonfunctional. |

Can somebody post a picture from these new features in 09īs instrument cluster? |

Surely for track days, you want to watch where you are going and make sure you are in the powerband (i.e. watch the rev counter). What will a gear indicator give you? Gear is calculated based on relationship between crank speed and output shaft speed, as Smoke says "the sensor for the speedo is before the drive sprocket so it doesn't know what happens behind it is the simple explanation" |

I was thinking the same thing, why would you look to see what gear your in on a track? Hell on a track you don't even need a cluster |

Jack, You can put an 09 instrument cluster on your 08 and it works fine. In fact, that's exactly how my track bike is set up because I had a warranty issue with my IC. The guys making comments about not looking at the IC while on the track aren't being dicks, they are being practical. You really don't want to be looking down on the track. EVER. Get a feel for your bike. After a couple of sessions on a track, you should know you are in the right gear by a combination of the sense of speed you get from your eyes, and the sound the motor is making. The *right* gear will give you a good drive, allow a constant, smooth throttle roll on, and not put your shift point in an impossible place. *what* gear that is just isn't important. My suggestion for your next track day is to take a couple of pieces of 2-inch blue tape and cover up the entire IC. It's honestly a good start. |
