I am coming up for service on both my 09 CR (6200 mile) and my 08R (620 mile). Over the winter I usually switch my XB over to 10w-40 to make it easier to start. What oil are you guys running during the winter? I will be doing regular riding below freezing temperatures, so I want to make sure my babies are ready for it.  | ||

I changed mine to 10w-40 also. Mine sets outside during winter and I ride threw the winter. | ||

What I'd really like is a 15W-45 or 15W-50. I thought of calling Mobil 1 and asking them about blending their 10W-40 and 20W-50 oils together and whether that would work -- whether the additive packages would be compatible. | ||

Use mobil 1 V-twin oil--it's a good oil. Don't use auto oils, many have friction modifiers that will wreak havoc on your clutch. | ||

I just checked the Mobil 1 site and they don't list a 15W-50 motorcycle oil. They do make a 15W-50 passenger car oil. From their FAQ on motorcycle oils: "It's a little hard to generalize about the difference between Mobil 1 passenger-car motor oils and Mobil 1 motorcycle oils. That's because not all viscosities of Mobil 1 passenger-car oils have the same levels of zinc and phosphorus, and there are even greater differences among the three Mobil 1 motorcycle oils. In general, Mobil 1 motorcycle oils have: * Additive packages balanced differently for motorcycle engine and transmission operation. For passenger vehicles, fuel economy and emission system protection are higher priorities. These require low phosphorus systems and the use of friction modifiers. Motorcycle oils do not require friction modifiers for fuel economy and for better clutch friction less/no friction modifier is optimum. Motorcycle oils allow the use of higher levels of antiwear additives such as ZDDP (phosphorous)." Now what I don't like about the 20W-50 is that it's intended for air-cooled V-twins and I don't know if that means that they compromised in some way (additive packages) compared to how they would have formulated it for liquid-cooled engines. | ||

Mobil is pretty good about responding to inquiries sent through their website. It'd be interesting to see what lube the recommend for our 1125's. | ||

@Fresnobuell Yes, I've dealt with that before -- I had a Suzuki Bandit 1200 that was about 20% more HP than stock. The bike had a marginal clutch to start with and the boards had many reports of ruined clutches from friction modifiers. I ended up running Mobil Delvac 1 and Shell Rotella T synthetic truck/diesel oil in my Bandit 1200 as they have no friction modifying additives and are designed for wet clutches. They are truly superior oils and I thought about them for this bike but went with M1 V-Twin 20W-50. | ||

I love Amsoil, but it can be difficult to obtain. If I was going to anything else, it would be Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W/50. I had big time problems with frictional modifiiers in some syn gear oil in my XB primary a while back. Luckily when I put in the right stuff, it corrected itself. | ||

I went with amsoil in both my bikes. I have been very impressed with the oil. I just pay the 20 bucks a year for the dealer fee and I can order the oil for the same price as what the dealers pay. The 10w-40 cost me 31.00 a gal. | ||

Use Motul. Their 5100 series has 10w40 10w50 and 15w50 viscosites. Ester synthetic blend Formula the oil smells like coconut. I like what Kal-Gard puts out for oils. They have 10w40 and 10w 50 viscosities in their Blends and Fully Synthetic ester based formulas as well. Aprilia guys love the Motul in their Rotax motors Rsv1000r Mille. Also with Motul they have the latest SL rating for Cataltyic converters which I think is in our exhaust pipe unless you have an aftermarket pipe. Just another tid bit. Mobil 1 V Twin is very, very , very good oil. Mobil 1 15w50 is very, very good oil. Both will do fine in an 1125. |
