Mounting a shift light on my R. Anyone see a problem with drilling two 3/16" holes in the flat area just in front of the speedo/display module? Worried about cracking. Light is about the size of a small cigar, and weighs next to nothing. My other thought was to mount through the windscreen, but the mount uses a plastic C shape clip, and wasn't designed to hold the unit upside-down , I'm assuming after time and vibration it would fail. The unit is fully programmable with ability to set individual shift points for 4 gears, but needs to be quickly removable for adjustment. Just not sure about drilling the fairing mount....thoughts? |

Just my opinion, but I'd be leery of drilling the fairing mount, as I believe it's alloy & likely susceptible to cracking if not done right. Maybe make a bracket that you can mount to that uses already existing attach points for the fairing? |

Thanks, P squared you pretty much made up my mind , and confirmed my worries. Now that drilling is off the table, I can't believe I didn't think of it earlier, but there is no reason i cant just velcro the damn thing to the fairing mount. I tend to over-think things a lot, LoL |

How big of a hole? I drilled mine with no issue at all. Get a drill that can turn about 15 RPM, use cutting lubricant, and go for it. Small holes (say for a #10 screw at biggest) only. It's soft magnesium, so a proper, new/sharp HSS bit should do the job fine. When you then use the screws, be sure to back them up top and bottom with washers to distribute the clamping force. This will likely make the whole fairing mount *stronger*, not weaker. |

That's where I put my voltmeter. Then BMC gave us a voltmeter on the dash...
Z <edit> It's only one hole for the wires, But it's been there 18-20k miles and over a year and a half. (Message edited by zac4mac on November 02, 2009) |

As you can see from the above posts, it does no known harm to drill the fairing mount. The magnesium does resist drilling, but it can be done, and has done no damage on mine (drilled top dead centre for a gps, which has since been relocated to the r/h clipon). |
