So I'm thinking about taking the next step and learning about tuning. I know nothing. Anyone have links to a good place for information so I can educate myself? I'd like to start with just general principles, and then move on to specifics. I'm resolved that this might be entirely beyond me, but I want to see how much I'm capable of comprehending before I actually spend any money on gear or software. One last question: when I read about you guys using various software products, are they plug and play? Or are they just rough approximations that require further adjustment by me? I've got several mods (e.g. Jardine exhaust, k&n filter, airbox removed, denoid); do these affect whether a particular product would be appropriate or plug and play? |

Factory Pro, learn about a 4 Gas EGA. Once you understand the idea of complete combustion vs. AFV you'll be well on your way. The web site is totally 1994 so you'll need to dig around, but begin with True HP. http://www.factorypro.com/ |

Thanks guys. I am of course familiar with some of the software products that are available, and I imagine that (if I decide to go on) I will probably at some point end up purchasing one. But at this point, even if I had all the gear I needed, I would still be like the proverbial monkey with a typewriter: I might eventually write something good, but there's a lot of garbage between here and there. Hellgate, I learned a little bit about the dyno controversy (why results are not comparable from one dyno --- or even one operator --- to another) on that site. And, although I wasn't able to find anything about complete combustion vs AFV there, I think I understand at least the concept, though I have no idea how to arrive at the proper mix. I still don't know the answer to my first question (repeated here): are these programs plug and play? Or are they just rough approximations that require further adjustment by me? And here's another question that probably reveals the depth of my ignorance: will I need access to a dyno? Or is this something I can tackle at home? (I'm beginning to imagine an answer something like "if you have to ask . . ."). |
