dB ratings are useless unless you are comparing it to another pipe tested the exact same way. One pipe might say something like 62 dB, but they don't tell you the microphone was in the next county. The American Sport Bike dyno shootout with the XB pipes was nice, he tested the dB of all of them in the same conditions to give a fair and accurate number. I can't wait for the 1125 version |

+10...What do we do to convince American Sport Bike to do an exhaust shootout of the 1125? |

It's nice to see fresno's irrational criti-fests being directed at someone else for a change. But it'd be nicer if they stopped altogether. |

It's a bit of a hijack, but on the other hand quite related. Here are better pics of my muffler mod. Adds power and sound, and I think looks OK, too.

Redscuell, do you notice a difference in the amount of air coming from the stock outlets compared to the one you have added? I don't know how much restriction is between the 2nd and 3rd chambers, but am wondering if you maybe ended up with like 70% coming out of your outlet and only a little out of the stock locations? Also, how loud? |

"dB ratings are useless unless you are comparing it to another pipe tested the exact same way. One pipe might say something like 62 dB, but they don't tell you the microphone was in the next county." Fair comment. My testing before and after followed the Australian protocol, which is (1) meter placed @ 45 degrees to the highest pipe, (2) about 1/2 metre away (I forget exactly), (3) in a cleared area (4) on concrete (5) at 1/2 peak power rpm (~5,000 rpm on the Rotax). Readings are 94 dB(A) before and after, yet the sound now is a more resonant v-twin. (Message edited by redscuell on August 05, 2009) |

Ponti, volume 'feels' to the hand to be roughly equal among the three, as is the quantity of any visible water vapour on a cold morn; and the infrared heat meter says the temps are roughly equal, too. Loudness isn't changed; the sound is a mellow, rumbly, v-twin sound. Felt power is up, dyno says so, too. 136 rwhp, 81 rwtq, which is lower than claimed at the flywheel but higher than I've seen posted for unmodified 1125R. Has the latest flash (12Z) but no mods at all to fuel or spark tables. I didn't do a pre-mod dyno run as I didn't need any more disappointments before I came up with a solution. I.e., when I had the bike weighed with all fluids fully topped up, the scale read 216 kg; and mathematically removing the fluids and the battery only brings it down to 190 kg. That's a LOOOONG way from the 170 kg claimed. I'm so happy with the change (which cost me just A$100, about U$80) that I wrote directly to Mr. Buell, with pics, about it. Haven't had a response, likely he doesn't want a penpal. (Message edited by redscuell on August 05, 2009) |

"dB ratings are useless unless you are comparing it to another pipe tested the exact same way. One pipe might say something like 62 dB, but they don't tell you the microphone was in the next county." No way, really? You think they'd put out some kind of standard to avoid that... http://www.austinburg.com/exhaust_noise_testing.ht m So, let's try this again and I'll rephrase. Does anyone have an actual, accurate dB measurement of the Drummer exhaust system mounted on an 1125r tested using the SAE J1169 standard? And the people who are bitching about Fresno's comments on loud bikes seriously need to think a little. You like riding loud bikes. No problem. Other people don't like loud bikes. Now there's a problem. Why is what you like more important than what they like? The bottom line is that it isn't. Believing that you can do anything you want regardless of the impact it has on other people is truly arrogant hypocrisy. Your rights end where other's rights begin. You have the right to use loud pipes up until a majority of the people decide they don't like it and begin to legislate against it, at which point you will no longer have that right. The logical, rational thing to do, then, is to be considerate and moderate your offensive behavior. If you are being considerate and someone gets all crotchety, by all means, eff them and the horse they rode in on. On the other hand, if you aren't being considerate... hopefully you can make that connection. Calling Fresno's comments in this thread irrational is really only indicative of the fact that you aren't thinking logically. PS. Red, nice looking bike, and nice looking pipe. I don't know how I feel about 3 exhaust exits... It looks hack to me. If you closed off the original 2 atleast you would have fixed the problem of exhaust on swing arm, but you still have it, except with an oddball bastardized mutant thing. |

Okay, baffle is in. Is it "quiet"? No. It is quieter than it was, though. Right now, it's about as loud as I would want it, so I'll run this for a bit and see how it goes. I think it sounds much better, as well. it still seems loud, but it doesn't hurt to listen to it, so I know it's a good bit more mellow than it was. |

Foam ear plugs. Don't matter if you have stock exhaust or not, makes a HUGE difference for riding. |

Xl1200r, spill the beans! Is it removable or anything like that? That way I can have it on 99% of the time, and then remove it/bypass it for times I so desire, like passing a Prius |

Well, i went for a long ride with it and decided it was still too loud. Bad news was the bike felt a little sluggish until about 5500rpm then took off - I would think a baffle would choke the top, not the bottom. Anyways, still too loud so I pinched off the main the opening to a smaller size. The sound, at least what I could do in my driveway, is perfect. A little louder than stock with good thump. I haven't been able to ride it yet like this, so I don't know how it feels. I'm hoping good, because it sounds really nice, now. Froggy - it mounts just like a baffle for a drag pipe - a 1/4"-20 nut and bolt holds it in the exhaust outlet. Comes out in minutes for a dyno competition or a track day. I'm out of town for a few days, but I'll take pics and post up when I'm back. |

My old S3 was way too loud with the D&D system installed. I cut the muffler exit pipe down and mounted a Super Trap system to the outlet. Quieted down a lot for only a small loss on top and a stronger mid range. Adjustable too. You likely don't want to do that to a new Drummer tho..... |

As promised - I thought the bike felt choked up, but I don't think that's the case. It likely isn't making as good of power as it was with the stock Drummer, but I'm really not a WOT kind of guy, and I hardly go over 8k when I get on it. Despite any power it might be taking away, it's still PLENTY of power to have lots of fun on the street. In fact, at one point, I took off from a near stop and the bike felt a good bit quicker than it was. So, my conclusion is that it probably makes about the same power as before, if not only slightly less, and my perceptions are only becuase I'm looking for them. Anyways, power is good, sound is good. Still a hair loud, but I'm going to run it as is. Thanks to tips from Buell013, I started with a Samson 2 1/2" baffle, Drag Specialties part number DS-209091. Micah cut it down to 6 3/32", then again down to 5 1/2 and left it at that. I cut it to about 6 1/4" and still thought it was too loud, so I pinched down the open end as much as I could. What I ended up with was this:
And the installed pic (keep in mind that a Drummer is a wide open chamber inside:

Very cool XL. Might have to give that a try. I was thinking about a cylinder 4-6" with a couple inches of SS screen at the end. I think the deeper you go with the dB killer, the deeper the thump. I do know it sounds like crap placed at the tip, tried that. Z |

Zac - I don't think this setup sounds any less deep than the Drummer without - it's just quieter. It's still loud, but I know it quieter because when riding the stock drummer, it was just obnoxious to me all the time, and I didn't ever get on it because of the volume. With this, I don't hesitate to get on it, even though it's still loud. Your idea may work, but what I found was that the opening on the end was letting the vast majority of the volume in - that's why I had to pinch it down to quiet it down some. |

For anyone that wants a great, highly efficient baffle type performance enhancer for your "loud muffler" consider trying either one of these two types. Check out their web sites and read all the information about them. Go to "www.carchemistry.com" and look for and read about their inserts. Also do a search for Dynatech mufflers and look for their "vortec inserts". If you will read about how they work you might see their benefits for quieting mufflers and not loosing power as I have. I have used them in quite a few systems I have built and THEY DO WORK as advertised. They do not make small sizes so I fabricated my own from their pictures for the 1125R system I made but was able to buy one in 2 1/2" for my M2. If you cannot make them yourselves, maybe you can enlist a good friend for a couple of cool drinks. These were originally engineered for drag cars with open headers that ran close to metro areas that have noise restrictions. I have posted about these before several times so if I sound repetitive I apologize. Bob |

Yes, I was just surprised at the difference between the two more than anything. I think the bike is rich at WOT under 6,000rpm as well. I get a slight surge in speed if I close the throttle a little before is slows down. Might be some tuning in the future. |
