For what it may be worth... Just got back from about a 25 mile thrash.. As I have found out in the last two weeks (and as I noted in others posts)...if you have the capability (O-S-B), and don't experiment with the ignition timing (add a boatload), you're really missing out. Pulls from 2000rpm, will pull away from a stop easily in second gear, runs a bit cooler, runs much smoother at all rpm's and has notably more power...through out the rpm range. NOW...I'm happy I bought this beast...! What's a POSITIVE "rant" called.? Mike |

1_Mike, Do you have a California bike? I do too, and I was warned that the flash utility wouldn't be tuned perfectly because of the catalyst. Did you use that or just tune it yourself? |

Ron - Yea, I'm in So. Cal. No catalyst as far as I know in these mufflers. That's why they are tuned so bad from the factory. Can ANYTHING be tuned "perfectly"..? That's a day to day, hour to hour thing! "Warned"...what does that mean? And I'd say...whom ever made a statement that this engine can't be tuned to the point that MOST would be very happy should have his phone number lost! Ron - Not sure what you are asking. I installed the O-S-B "performance" program and started changing the timing maps to suit. These changes WERE...after miles on the as purchased program! The fuel map is close for a stock exhaust. The timing map...in my opinion...is way off for this engine. I will be getting an HMF exhaust in the next week or two, so I woun't be hitting up any dyno shops until after that. I then will be making my own exhaust, so I'll need to do a coupla more dyno runs to make sure the fuel is close. Mike |

I would be interested in seeing what you did for timing in the 3k-4k range. Its one of the last areas I have some vibes that i can see in th3 tach just as it goes from 3800rpm to 4000rpm. Other then that I have it pretty smooth at running. I just did about 3 hour run in low 90 deg weather and my bike ran 175 - 181 temps. pretty good considering one of the R1's that was chasing me was showing 235 when we came to a stop. Who says our bikes run hot... |

1_mike I have a couple questions regarding the o_s_b performance tune. I am very close to a purchase. Could you please email me so we may talk? Regards, Sleeper_777 |

Thank the EPA and CARB for all the hassle. HD/Buell have to appease them. Producing neutered machines and keeping them that way is THEIR agenda. With a few small tweaks, Loretta runs like she should. De-noided and throttle cams locked together K&N, no inner airbox, Drummer. 5.5 deg BTDC idle timing(0-10% TPS/800-2200rpm) AFV locked at 97/WOT enrichment 107%/O2s disabled. I have plenty of power, and a docile(kinda) machine in the lower rpms. In town I can run 30-40 in 3rd or 4th and not make a lot of racket. Sounds a lot like my XB9R with the race kit, maybe a tad louder. Drummer has a delicious thump to it. When the 1125 motor is happy, it is a very nice powerplant. This is the best motorcycle I have ever owned/ridden. Z |

MIke ...if you have a Cali bike,,,then YES it does have a catalytic converter in the can. this has all been discussed in (way) past threads |

How much is a "boatload" of timing? I have added from 5% to 7% with power gains, but fear adding too much. Do these engines have know sensors or any other failsafe that will not allow predetonation? |

What I don't know much of anything about is playing with timing. Is there a good reference (website, book, etc.) to help a n00b get a feel for the process? |

On ignition timing, reference material...none that I'm aware of. But that doesn't mean there isn't any out there. Automotive references are good...it's just an engine. My experience is just from a lotta years of tuning 8 cylinder engines. The basics are the same. One good way to know how far is too far is to......thanks Buell....check the spark plugs for little black flecks or spots. 1. Listening for unnatural pounding, metallic sounds upon hard acceleration. 2. Another way is on the drag strip, the MPH will fall off when too high. 3. Or...if you have a GPS and a stretch of road....the MPH will fall off when too high. 4. A dyno will let you know the same way. As far as adding additional gasoline to cool the cylinders...that only works to a very small extent. Partially unburnt gas residue (that black crap) will actually insulate the metal it's on and not let things cool the way they should. That is....unless you're using nitrus or alcohol. THOSE do cool the chambers. As for the word "boatload"...in some areas, I added as much as 14 degrees. Someone asked about vibration. The thing almost feels like an I-4 below 5000 rpm. Then the vibration only goes up a little. Most all of the lower rpm pounding is all but gone. Sorta on a bad note...the idle now is as quiet as a church mouse! Mike |

o.s.b has a fuel map from me, pete at grandstanddesigns also, it will run on 95% of the bikes, 2008 models.. with k&N.. the stock timing is oke, i understand why people play with the timing because it's easier then fuell if you have no lamda, i suggest update the fuel.. |

Easy - "i understand why people play with the timing because it's easier then fuell if you have no lamda," Strange thing to say for someone that supposedly knows this stuff.......do you really mean this?? All due respect... The ignition timing IS...a major part of the total tuneup..! If you don't give the engine what it wants for BOTH fuel AND timing...you're only tuning half of the engine and most likely getting less than half the performance capable. And If I may say, apparently, don't understand the way an internal combustion engine works. If the fire burns inside the cylinder...you get work done, power. If it burns as it's going into the exhaust pipe (late advance or low timing)...it's a complete and total waste of energy. It does nothing as it travels down the exhaust pipe except heat the air and surrounding metal bits... Mike P.s. - I think the word is "thAn"...not "then", in the way you used it.. |

Mike - Easyrider, aka Dris at Twin Motorcycles, has spent more dyno time with 1125s than anyone but Buell R&D. Also, he's in Holland. His English is a lot better than my Dutch. Z |

teach, i send osb my fuel map for the torque hammer our exhaust for the 1125 made with a K&N filter. after some experiments with other exhaust manufacturers, this is a good standard map, for a lot of exhaust, the stock and our torque hammer... 1_mike, i totally agree with you, and sorry for my cheesy english.. |

Just don't assume the timing maps that work with 2 valve pushrod bathtub chamber motors will work with a modern 4 valve motor...completely different animals. |

All I'm saying ladies...is that with the O-S-B maps in my 09, CR......the timing was way off. Dave and I talked a little about it when I was starting my quest for more power. No clue about the 08's. I did the same thing on my XB (actually did it first), added a lot of timing...the power went up, the drivability went up AND....the gas mileage went up. As for my CR, the power went up, the driveability went up, and the mileage went up just a touch. As I said, all due respect...you leave timing on the table...you leave power on the table. That's the way an internal combustion engine works. Easyrider may have just missed something...it happens. Try it before throwing stones. Hearsay counts for nothing. Me...I like what works in front of me, not what someone claims. Claims don't much count unless youv'e tried it for yourself..! That's why I said..try it! Mike P.s. - the "then" and "than" thing....WASN"T derogatory....just helpfull information. (Message edited by 1_mike on July 16, 2009) |

Mike, I miss so much every day on the dyno, that I really appriciate the help from people with no dyno experience, they always can show the work they did and the dyno graphs on the internet and show what they did, I learn so much when people can show what they did. I really want to thank you for this. |
