I know that I have read some thread on badweather about this before, but wanted to ask being a new rider. Today I was out riding and with the gas prices what they are there are a ton of bikes out here in N. VA, all of them waved to me, and I reciprocated when I could, all that is except the 4 H-D riders that I waved to, they just ignored me; is this common ? I understand that I am not on a true H-D, but I also understand different strokes for different folks; I don't care if your on a scooter, 2 wheels = I wave when safe to do so. | ||

Happens all the time. It's usually the chopper guys who wear beanines as a helmet. Anway, if they don't wave, I just follow them and stalk them for years to come  . (j/k) I will say however, there is nothing more embarrassing than to wave to a scooter and not be waved back. | ||

Most people on bikes will wave but there are a few who dont. Its just a friendly hi to a fellow biker. The people that dont wave are not bikers but just commuters and feel no fellowship. | ||

It's hit and miss. I wave to everyone....including moto-cops. Sometimes people get back to you...sometimes they don't. I do it as a sign of "hey...I'm being aware...do the same and ride safe". | ||

i wave at the bikes not the people and i know the bike can't wave back. usually i don't pay attention to see if the riders wave back. tim | ||

I feel it completely BS to concentrate any effort on any sort of wonder of a wave. If there is no drama, I wave. If there is something more important than an oncoming rider, I ignore. Four surgeries kind of make you think what is MOST important THAT IS in front of you. The oncoming rider usually is not that. He/she should be concentrated on the same, what is front of them, not another biker. Brands don't give a shit when your being flown in by helicopter! Nor should YOUR cool wave warrant mine in return. mm | ||

Two types of waves in CA (from oncoming rider): Left hand thumb up: No cop ahead Left hand on helmet: Cop ahead And it is generally considered good form to return the appropriate signal. | ||

I'm in So. Cal. - I'm currently on a Yamaha R1, 82 miles a day, 5 days a week. Seriously thinking of a 1125CR though... As others have said, on occasion, it's not safe...but I'd say in most cases when I see another guy/girl on a bike...I wave. I normally don't stare at the other person to verify that they wave back...! I normally keep my eyes on the rode during heavy traffic, but peripheral vision works well for seeing others. As for the big bad Harley types... Seems at least for me...the "real" (Harley) biker types...you know, long grey hair, long grey beards, big heavy boots...bikes NOT laden with "billet" crap...THEY...seem to wave. As someone else said, the weekend boys with the shiny beany helmets, billet heavy, 10,000 dollar paint jobs...they seem to be too good to wave...but I do anyway. If I pull up to one of these types at a signal...I normally try pull ahead a little and make it obvious when I turn to nod or wave...they hate that, cause they'er kinda obligated to wave or nod back! Cops don't normally...seem to wave back. I do get a surprise every now and again when I pull up behind one while splitting lanes...and they wave me by...! I used to think is was to follow me. But so far, I've gotten no tickets from one of these "wave by's". Mike | ||

As a new rider you should be concentrating more on riding than waving... However, it is common to wave and acknowledge others on less than 4 wheels. The people that dont wave are not bikers but just commuters and feel no fellowship. Or maybe they just don't get bent out of shape because some stranger didn't say "hi". I wave to everyone. I'm not a biker. Figure that out. These threads really weird me out - people being brought to tears over unreturned waves. Sometimes the HD guys don't wave to me. Sometimes the sportbike guys don't wave. Most of the time the BMW guys don't wave. Lucky for me I change my tampon daily so I don't get bent up about it. Just ride your bike. | ||

I think I'll start hugging people in the supermarket... but ONLY people who have vegetables in their shopping carts... or beer. People with fruit or cereal or personal hygiene products won't get my hugs! Same for people with romance novels. They usually don't smile back at me in the aisles. They're too stuck on themselves. | ||

I am glad that someone else hates themselves a little bit when they wave at a scooter by accident. Those Honda scooters are very deceptive looking from the front. I wave at everyone, and if they don't wave back I chalk them up as a miserable person. |
