My rear left turn signal went out yesterday. I have about 7600 miles on the bike. Is this a normal lifespan? It seems that Buell only sells the entire blinker assembly, about $40-50.

Thanks,

- Josiah

on mine both are burnt. The right one died 2 days after the left one. So I have no rear signals. I'm waiting for the parts for the recall to arrive to have both problems fixed the same visit.

Please check the connection behind the fairing stay. Easy to follow the wires if you unbolt one or both sides then the wire will be the only part left to disconnect. It may have become loose, or they trully have burn out, which is too short of a lifespan to be happy with. Is this a warranty issue or pocketbook issue?? If it is the later, I will only use the blinkers every other turn now, double the lifespan right. Haha. Hope things work out. The only other L.E.D./mirror setup I have seen is the on the 848 Duc. Wonder if they will have the same issues?, but knowing Ducati is not a $40-50 issue, maybe double if not more.

Just my €.02

Luis, both my rear turns also failed. Broke them apart. The LEDs are in series. One was open on each. Both regulators were good, these are also on the PC board. I ordered both from Barnett and payed for them @ $47ea. I think it would be debatable that they be covered under warranty as they are "light bulbs". Next time I'm going to order the older bulb versions.

Left rear went out on mine. I was quoted $47.00 by the local dealer 2 replace it. I installed aftermarket LED turnsignals on the rear for $27.00 (both lights)instead. They should last me until I save up enough pennies for all the things I want to do on the rear end.

And how old are your 1125r's? Anybody hear of something that starts with a "W" and ends with a "y". Buells have a 2 year unlimited miles one.

It really does cover these items. All you have to do is ask your dealer to replace them. Even if you have other plans for your turn signals, the OEM ones are handy to have around.

Neil, 2 b honest, I didn't "THINK" the light would be covered under warranty, as I thought it was a consumeable item, so I didn't even check/confirm/ask. I just asked how much for a replacement. After hearing the price, I decided to remedy the problem via aftermarket. That's what I get for "thinking".

But now I can add it on to my list of "things to do/have done" when I get it in for the 5th gear recall.

Thanks for pointing that out.

Mine went out on the right rear side and warranty covered it.

The other annoying thing about my bike is I keep loosing mirrors! The glass shakes out of the mirror assembly!

Both mine (rear signals) were discovered out today, during recall work. They're being replaced under warranty.

I just yesterday picked up my 1125r from service at Glendale Harley Davidson. They fixed the factory re-call issue and replaced my right rear turn signal. This turn signal was done under warranty, as it is not a bulb type fixture. So until your warranty runs out, get them on board to replace it for free under warranty. If you have problems with that, have them call the factory, local Buell rep or Glendale Harley Davidson.

LED lights are well into fifth and sixth generation and should not be burning out this quickly or cost this much to replace. I am not sure why these turn signal fixtures are failing at such a high rate, but it must be the sub-contractor who supplies Buell with these parts and poor quality control. If our local law enforcement and fire departments had this much failure rate with their emergency LED fixtures, then something would get done.

I hope Buell and Harley Davidson is listening, because this is a warranty item and it is costing them big. 1 LED turn signal is $45 plus dollars. 1 flat-rate hour to install (service hour labor cost). Do the math!

Use your warranty to the max}}}

Y'all's timing is impeccable. My left rear turn signal went out a couple of days ago. I've been using hand signals... though mostly middle finger.

\begin{bitch}
I was also shocked to see the near $50 it will cost to replace... warranty or not, these things don't have sufficient life in them... I would expect to get at least a couple year's worth of signalling before the light or LED burns out.
\end{bitch}

... say, wait a second, indeed this may be a warranty issue. No lights should be going out this soon...

LED's are solid state - they should not need replacing, period.

I suspect a power issue (insufficient resistor'ing leading to failure).

My guess would be low quality "IN" diodes.
These are used keep any A/C voltages out (just in case there are some odd ripples from the charging system)

Anyhow, With my day job at Mercedes EVERY tail light that I have seen fail that was LED's was caused by this diode going out.

In bikes i don't think the A/C ripples really exist too much, but in cars they are a greater issue due to the charging system set up.
but in every turn signal setup I have seen for bikes DOES contain this diode.

The LED's themselves can take a harsh beating and still work. But if that little bitty diode gets beat up too much for some reason they will say no more!

I use one for every circuit in my lights and hope they stay good! so far all is well. I just wonder if Buell somehow got a really bad batch or if they ended up getting the wrong ones or what? seems like too many of you folks are experiencing this issue. I'm thinking there was a design flaw somewhere along the lines.

Hell, I have seen many many SUPER cheap LED signals keep working for years!

who knows, but I can guarantee this, once they see that the signals are high on there warranty charts they will be re-thinking them and the supplier!

Ride safe guys, just my thoughts!

FWIW, not to put Rob down but, there are 1,000's of LED turn signals out on the market. Rob was smart and brought to market a niche product. Even that is a double edged sword since there is a limited market for his models but, he doesn't need to have 37,000 different types either.

Recently I added these to my 1125r:

Well, I might do signals on a small scale (request only) but for the most part Neil is right, there are soo many options out there its almost pointless.

I did gut my aftermarket signals and install my own LED boards, but that was b/c I didnt want to spend high dollar when i can make them my own.

Also Neil, its really not a double edge sword.
I have a 50+ hour work week at the day job, plus the "honey-do" list so I don't want to be too busy. I'd say im just where i want to be......

Ride safe you guys!!!

Kisan Technologies makes that license plate frame. It has sequential turn signal LEDs and their Tailblazar decaying stop light flasher. VERY effective in GRABBING anyone's attention.

Yes, there are many LED turn signals to choose from, but to date, I have only found one [darn'ed expensive] dual circuit running light / flasher LED sig.

Neil:
i'll have to check that out! I like that plate frame!

Midknyte:

I LOVE your quote on the profile

"Objects in mirror are dumber than they appear."

A+ on that!!!!!

I could do dual circuit signals. But I fear that the cost for me to do it on such a small scale would make it a bit pricey.
how much are the other ones you have seen.
Plus I have to have a housing to install them in (that has a clear lens)........

If you would like to try and work something out shoot me an email and we can see what we can do.

Thanks!

I've been burned trying to save a buck on my signals (well, sorta - they were the only good looking dual filament bulb signals I could find regardless of cost) and have resigned myself to trying to find a deal.

I'm going to spend the coin on shock racing led sigs and get it over with. I really like their design. Just wish they didn't cost so much.

Rob,

Dual purpose sigs are very hard to find, especially good looking ones. Food for thought. That is all...

My right rear went out a few days back. Called the dealership and they don't have any spares and won't order any until the technician says the light is bad...it's 100 miles, of straight road, round trip to take my bike in!!
Then yesterday, I washed my bike and the right signal, front only, was on all the time. Today it's back to normal, still no rear signal. Strange!

Bike at the dealer today for a bunch of stuff getting fixed, including this turn signal. We'll see how long it takes for the other one to go... : )

Fresnobuell,

The only symptom I experienced was the loss of the turn signal itself, and the dealer did the replacement, so I can't be certain there weren't any mitigating issues. As long as the turn signals are covered under warranty, I'm happy.

Both my signals went out about a week apart. Luckily we had a set in stock at the shop. It is definitely a warranty issue, both of mine were covered.
