You're right Neil.... On a short stroke engine, there is not much time to get fuel/air in and exhaust out without some overlap. The "suction" part of the intake stroke is so short in duration. Makes me optimistic regarding the 1125's true potential. I'm thinking that they could get 160rwhp out of the engine pretty easy. If they want to bump the displacement, they could go superbike racing if they can get 200rwhp out of it. Once you take a bike racing, the technology trickles down to the street and yields better bikes. None of us are going to beat a bike up like a professional rider over the course of a race season. |

I would not blame the engine layout yet. I think the fuel injection has to be sorted first. DDFI3 has wrecked the mileage on the XB series, by 20% to 30%. Most DDFI2 XB riders report getting at least 50 mpg, myself included. The reports on the DDFI3 XBs are 35-40 mpg, with a few getting in the mid-40s. (Message edited by spatten1 on July 07, 2008) |

I agree that the FI system is wack right now. At peak, though, I wouldn't bet on getting 50-60MPG. I don't see that coming form any of the other equally tuned peer group. The RC8 is predicted to be upper 30's low 40's. I do believe there is room to improve, but I don't believe that we will get miraculous fuel economy that we aren't seeing from other V-Twins of similar design and output. |

Yeah, it won't touch the long-stroke XBs, but upper 30's low 40's would be good for a performance engine. |

That, to me, would be a realistic target. |

All this talk of fuel mileage makes me think of this:

Just got back from Homecoming, ~1100 miles each way. Reset AVG while there. It's back to 37 where it always has been. Z |

37-40 MPG sounds very reasonable for a performance bike. I'd be happy with that. |

rode to Hollister yesterday and put 100 miles (going there) on the freeway mainly (65-75mph) and got 36mpg... Elvira must like the open road, she even ran cooler at around 185. |

I took a couple little trips this past weekend and averaged 43mpg. Granted, I had a tail win part of the time, helping me up to 48mph (I was gonna take a snapshot of that to tease ) But yeah, on average I see 35 with mixed driving, and 38-39 on the highway. |

"I agree that the FI system is wack right now. At peak, though, I wouldn't bet on getting 50-60MPG. " I'm getting 50 on a regular basis with my X1. 55 regularly on the highway. Best ever was 64, all while doing 65mph on the highway after a fresh oil change, travelling downhill with a strong tailwind ;] Do any of the aftermarket exhaust options improve fuel mileage on the 1125s? |

The Buell website is now listing MPG ratings for the 2009 1125R...39 city / 53 highway! Either they did some sort of modifications to the 2009 model, or someone is smoking crack. LOL!!!! |
