Anyone found a good way to keep the stock mirrors adjusted? My adjustment preference tends to be with the stem in the center of its range of motion. However, when reaching speeds in excess of say 60 or so, wind resistance and/or vibration rotate the stems all the way back toward the rider. Tried to leave the stem where it "wants to be" and just adjust the mirror glass, but could not get it set to where I could see properly behind me. Not sure how to fix this properly, so I thought I'd solicit input from you fine folks... |

I tried all kinds of tricks, finally gave up and installed Firebolt long-arm mirrors. Re-wired the signals to the running lights. Sitting up/tucked in was too hard to change for with stock mirrors. With Firebolt mirrors, just grab and move. Zack |

well, this is probably going to ignite some sort of "take it to the dealer and get them to fix it" debate but, I had the same issue and took care of it on my own. I have an adhesive spray that I use for mounting photos to boards. Its nothing fancy and you can buy some at WallyLand in the craft section. I sprayed some on small shim of wood, soaked it and then let it drip on to the joint. Moved it back forth while it dryed and now its nice and tight. Had a similar issue with the right side bolt that adjusts the angle of the headlight. It just started dropping like a lazy eye while cruising on the highway. Did the same trick with the glue and its all good. I can still adjust it, but the adhesive is just enough to create a hold. |

All I can say is, be careful adjusting them! And, warn anyone who rides your bike not to adjust them improperly. I already broke one. |

If the mirrors are working OK for you but the stalk won't stay put, you can peen the rivet tight at the base. I did that and it worked, but the glass vibrated too much and was too hard to adjust. That's when I went to "Plan B" Z |

I found that if I keep adjusting them to only see way out to the sides, they are set perfectly just for a few moments as they slowly blow back. Also, if I wish to identify something behind me, I find it very handy to just pull over to the shoulder and turn off the bike and then you can see what ever is behind you. Only then you can see if it is a state'y in a crown vic or the sheriff in the Suburban that has you pulled over. These mirrors are very highly engineered pieces of technological wonder.

I haven't had any problems with the stems staying in their normal place. I just adjust the mirror in the housing to where I want it...That being said, I can either get a clear 1/2 mirror shot of my shoulders and 1/2 mirror shot of whats behind me on either side. or I can get a shot of the lanes next to me. I can't really get any visual of whats directly behind me, which is unnerving.... what was that quote from Cannonball???? "what's behind me does not matter!!!.. Zac, I don't even bother trying to change the mirrors for when I tuck as opposed to relaxed. I guess if I'm tucked, I am going too fast to be anything other than F&%$#d if there is one of my colleagues behind me My mirrors do vibrate, but nothing like I have heard people describing here. I can still make out what I need to, I just wouldn't use the images in a photo. |

The nut holding the mirror shell to the stem is backing off. Any tips on getting that mirror off for some tightening? |

Zac is experienced with removing mirrors. IIRC he boiled them until the hot melt adhesive melted. If they were my mirrors, I would be at my Dealer saying, these need to be replaced, how many pairs do you have in stock? If no stock, when will they be shipped? Just my $0.02. Neil S. Highway - a lot of times I tuck just to get out of the gale-force winds we get here. Dre - I haven't tried, but you can see the nut, perhaps try driving it with an ice-pick. You can dis-assemble it by boiling it, only takes a minute or two in the water. Make sure and get the glass carrier to a flat surface fast if you're going to re-assemble the mirror. It's a thermoset plastic and WILL warp fast. Sure love my mouse-ears, simple and functional. Z |

Dre99gsx, mine did this as well. Took it to the dealer and it was a complete replacement part (warranty item), no maintenance possible. Although i have heard from badweb here that if you heat up the mirror by soaking in hot water, carefully pry mirror off the heat activating glue, then there is a nut that will pull the rest of the components outa the way so you can get access to the nut. Not recommended though because like i said, warranty item. |

I was also having the "auto-folding" mirror problem. I was up near Buell in East Troy a few weeks ago, so I decided to go ask if there was a way to adjust the mirrors or if they had any suggestions. I ran into one of the Buell staff members in the parking lot, and he quickly took me to the offices while he asked one the engineers about the issue. After asking me if I had been "folding" the mirrors, I replied that the issue had been present since I took delivery. The Buell staffer told me that the mirrors are designed to "give" in a tip-over or other minor bump, but they are not intended to be folded repeatedly. The mirrors have small plastic washers that provide the "give", but they compress if the mirrors are folded and don't hold position any more. They suggested that my dealer order mirrors for replacement. I got the replacements, and they no longer folded back. I was reasonably pleased with the improvement until last week, the left mirror started coming loose from the stalk. I tried to tighten the nut inside, but I was unable to get a tool on the nut without disassembly (which I didn't want to do). Another call to my dealer, and I got the loose mirror replaced yesterday. We'll see how long it stays together. Too bad because I really like the integrated turn signal. I think that the folks at Buell may need to talk to their supplier about a way to allow owners and mechanics a way to adjust tension on both the stalk and the mirror housing. This should not require a replacement every time something loosens, in my opinion. In any case, my warranty is working as intended, so I am happy. George (Message edited by gfc55 on April 16, 2008) |
