Thanks in advance for any and all advice! I'm looking at the Arai RX7 Corsair as well as the Suomy Spec 1R Extreme. Anyone have first hand experience with either lid? I'm interested to know what your thoughts are... pros/cons, I imagine Houston is gonna be HOT (I'm relocating this summer from Boston), so how are both on heat management/venting? Noise and lift are also a concern. Thanks for your attention, Boomer |

I've got one of each. The Suomy is very light, extremely noisy and the chinbar (for me) is a little narrow - 5mm taller would be ideal. The quality is superb but functionally it's like a 90s Arai, made in Italy. The Suomy head shape is a mix of Arai+Shoei. The Corsair is well vented and noisy, but not as loud as the Suomy. Typical Arai quality, popular choice. If the fit is OK, I'd recommend the Arai. The Suomy runs it pretty close but for the price you'd have to really want the Suomy. |

HOT isn't the word for Houston in the summer. It's a sauna. Be prepared to shower 3-5 times a day or live in air-conditioning 24/7. I grew up there and rarely go back in the summer. My personal pref is a Nolan N-102c modular. Noisy but very comfortable. Zack |

I have a Suomy Spec 1R (not the extreme), and have tried on an RX7. The Extreme will probably be a little louder than the regular model due to the extra little intake on the forehead. Mine vents pretty good, I'd imagine the extreme is even better. Fit and finish is superb. They're a little snug at first, but break in really nice. Make sure you try some on before you buy - they run a little smaller than most brands. The best thing is it's SO LIGHT. I didn't think I'd care all that much about the weight, but it's almost like you're not wearing a helmet. My only complaint is the visor removal system totally sucks balls. There's really no way to do it quickly and gracefully, having to remove the side covers with a special tool. From removing the covers, to removing the shield, to installing the new shield, to reinstalling the covers, you feel like you're about to break everything you touch. As far as I'm concerned, my ICON is VASTLY superior in this regard. The RX7 was a heavier on my head and felt like a bigger helmet. I think it has a similar crappy visor design. I never rode with it, so I can't comment on noise. |

I know it's a controversial subject, but the Suomy Spec 1R (which I have) doesn't meet current Snell standards (it is DOT approved and "Certified to British Standard"), and this is viewed as a good thing by some... Snell approved helmets (like most Arais) have a stiffer outer shell, which has been shown to transmit more g-forces to the brain in an (blunt) impact... not good if you want to avoid brain injury. So, I'd go for the Suomy, just because I think it's safer. Others will likely disagree... (Message edited by Pariah on April 10, 2008) |

Takis is right... they got the helmet so light by getting the British sticker instead of the Snell one. What i heard, read, was told, whatever, was that Snell requires the helmet to sustain a second, lesser impact which simulates the head bouncing around the roll-cage of a race car. Something that isn't typically needed in motorcycle applications. This makes for a harder (and heavier) shell that is more difficult to compress, so it absorbes less energy per hit, but can absorb a second hit after that. The British standard has no "second hit", so the entire thickness of the helmet can be used to absorb the initial impact. I was sold on the idea... you can get the skinny by going to Suomy's website - they have a big FAQ section on it. |

Hey Boomer can we trade houses? I live just North of Boston and I like a helmet that has a inside flip down tinted visor so when riding I can go from clear to tint in a second and found it really useful, it also does not get scratched up by dust particals so when the sun hits my shield and kind of blinds me I open the outer shield and then can see real good, there are a couple of modular helmets that have it but if you want snell approved then I would go with the Scorpion exo 1000, I also read that on the exo 700 you could pour water in your helmet and it would keep you cool, has something to do with the liner, I think what I read is on this web site, www.webbikeworld.com/motorcycle-helmets/motorcycle -helmets.htm I bought an Akuma helmet and they are not snell rated but are ece R 22-05 rated real cool helmet and they are coming out with a shield that darkens by electrical current, as for noise goes I have Etymotic research ear plugs, I bought them from www.aerostich.com . or you can go to www.etymotic.com the plugs block noise but you can still hear to, so if you stopped at a gas station you could talk with out removing them and I think I paid twenty for them and work great, I rarely use them because on the highway I listen to music, but highly recommend them, also from Aerostich you can get a sample packs of different ear plugs, plus other products I have not seen any were else. what part of boston are you moving to? I live in Peabody and can get to the drag strip in N Hampshire in 45 minutes and Laconia is about 60 miles away. Penguin race school is in Massachusetts and teach at the Loudon race track and is something I am planning to do. When is your move date? We have Nebo New England Buell owners here and are merging with a group from New Hampshire. I think Massachusetts sucks but there is good riding North, West, and South of here. the biggest motorcycle rally is in June and is called the Americade at lake George N Y, www.tourexpo.com and is from June 2-7 and is the biggest all around motorcycling event. Anyway I can be your tour guide so look me up when you get here. Mike |

I have the Suomy Spec 1R Extreme and I love it. It's so light I don't even know it's there half the time. |

Sound like nice lids, but one look at the 1125R, and the only helmet she screamed at me was a Simpson Bandit. Call me old school, but I think it's the best match. Not to mention I enjoy the ventilation on them as well as their fit. |

Hah! I can be the same way in the am Mike! No worries! I agree, the state has some issues, not really gonna miss the weather, but she is my home nonetheless. Don't get me wrong, there's lots I'm gonna miss, I'm just ready for a break from this "police state". |
