Hello,

I just picked up my new 1125R, and whenever I shut the bike off after a ride, it fills the garage full of a bad gas smell. Not just a faint smell, but so bad you can barely breath smell.

It only happens after riding, I checked the airbox, it is dry, no fuel leaking that I can see, no drips.

Bike is brand new, 200 klms on it.

Any ideas?

Check your fuel rail...
Mine was cracked
I wish I could tell you more... but I was informed of this by my dealership

Okay this is a dumb question, but what is a fuel rail and where is it?

Hi Mike,
First of all, Congrats!
I had the same thing when I got mine. Smelled fuel in the garage after a ride. I took the airbox cover off and found that the rubber hose running from the tank vent was not connected so the vapor from the tank vented directly out into air in stead of routed through the charcoal cannister.

This is an easy remedy you can do yourself or have the dealer do it.
Fresno, the fuel rail sits between the pump and the injectors.

Ok Thanks for the information, I took off the airbox cover, and the rubber hose running from the tank vent is going directly to the ground. There is no charcoal cannister that I can find. There is also a breather tube that is going into the airbox with a foam filter. This filter is soaked in fuel...

Is the charcoal canister on all bikes, or just California spec?
I am in Canada....

Thanks for the help.

The charcoal cannister is only on CA and EU models so I though since you were in Canada that yours would have a cannister also.
The breather tube into the airbox? There's not such a contraption on mine though...

Is that tube connected to the same tank vent nipple on the front right side of the frame/tank? That would be odd.

Here are some pics. The first pic has the hose with foam filter that attaches to the bottom of the airbox. The second one is the vent hose from tank that runs straight to the ground.

I am thinking something must be screwy here, I guess I'll have to drag it 300 miles to my dealer next week...

Thanks for the help guys...

hey gang ..those fuel lines are very easily cracked...be careful what you tinker with. ..also is it possible you are over filling the gas tank? I believe if you look there is an over fill condition if you go above a certain point with this type of tank. consult your owners manual on that point i dont have one and honestly ...i am not going to look for one. With the government talking about losing the penny i just wanted to put in my two cents.

Court,

Thanks, e-mail sent.

Buzzie - Thanks, that's what I thought at first, but after my second ride, with the low fuel light on, it still filled the house with a fuel smell. I am not riding it anymore until I get it sorted that's for sure...

Thanks for the help guys...

I've noticed my machine giving off a fuel odor after long rides as well.

Let me know what this turns out to be and if I should visit the dealer...

from Wikipedia.org

quote:

A fuel rail is essentially a pipe (usually resembling a rail) used to deliver fuel to individual fuel injectors on internal combustion engines. It is designed to have a pocket or seat for each injector as well as an inlet for a fuel supply. Some fuel rails also incorporate an attached fuel pressure regulator. Fuel rails are used on engines with multi-point fuel injection systems, although some multi-point systems use a fuel distributor with individual pipes or tubes to feed each injector.

I had one day in particular a while back after a longer ride where the smell of fuel was strong in my closed garage. I haven't had that happen since--a faint gas smell here and there but nothing bothersome.

Im having the same issue with the strong smell of fuel. Its so strong you can smell it inside my house. And its overwhelming in the garage. Im going to take it to the dealer when i get some time off and if its warm enough to ride.

If there are others having the "1125R Fuel Smell" drop me a NOTE with your contact info (name, address, best time to call) dealer info (name, who, phone), VIN and a description of the conditions.

Be SURE to use the subject 1125R FUEL SMELL.

No smell here, garage shut tight.

If it's a strong smell Richard, VENTILATE.
Avoid sparks...

I also get the fuel smell after a long ride. Stinks up the garage. Doing a 620mile 1st maintenance soon, will check the obvious.

I rode 277 miles yesterday and Loretta stunk up the garage on our return.
When I went out to the garage this morning, not a trace of fuel odor.

I'm sure this is different than what Darkice, Bobup or TSRF are seeing/smelling.

Zac

same thing as mine
odor after the ride
goes away after having "vented"
suggest you PM Court as well

this is not a "normal" thing to have happen.
gas vapors are a dangerous mix with a garage and a water heater.
an empty gas tank is more dangerous than a full one.

send a PM to Court

Bobup - with the knowledge that at least one bike had a cracked fuel rail and the system tries to keep rail pressure up, any bike with that problem will stink the place up BAD.
Did you say there was a part missing on the FI on yours, or was that someone else?

I had the smell of fuel, but not strong.
Certainly not strong enough to be combustible.
I don't know yet if it's "normal" but it's certainly not as high priority as one that is really leaking.
I'll wait and watch, unless the odors get strong enough to present a hazard.

Not like Richard's(Darkice),since he said he could smell his in the house.

2400 miles, and as someone else said, no problems I didn't cause myself.

I got a call from Buell today and took the bike into the dealership at their request.

Today was one of the warmer days we've had. Made it past 80. I got the 1125r good and hot in traffic on the way to the dealership.

Once there, I pulled in, and she stunk so bad I smelled up the whole service department. So, I do think it's temprature related... My previous thinking that the smell goes away after a while does not appear to be correct...

Thanks to Buell for the follow-up. I'll let you know what I learn. My dealer / Buell are looking at it now.

My bike is missing a "clip" of some kind in the FI. The tech didn't say anything about excessive fuel odor and I never smelled any. However it's supposed to possibly cause hard starting and possibly a fuel system trouble code. I had the trouble code only but the tech had both. The dealer has little tech info on the 1125 yet but the tech was very enthused to work on the bike and got a lot of fax and phone time with Buell. He was very happy with the support level he was given from the factory. The bike has been sitting for nearly a week now, waiting for the part.
Coming from Austria I suppose!

I rode mine today for about 10 minutes, pulled up to my buddies shop and the first thing he said was " damn, I can smell gas over here", right after that I see a 3 inch puddle under the bike up front that turned out to be gas. couldn't find where it was coming from though. Almost afraid it will drip onto the exhaust and catch fire ( it was close enough to it). I need to bring it to the dealer any how for the tach needle problem. It's just starting to get warm he in texas and would hate to be without the bike for a week .
