I have been surfing through the various posts here of people having trouble with their new 1125Rs right out of the crate. I became rather frustrated reading through them all. Some people have said that they have had trouble free miles and others continue to complain of nagging quirks. My question... Has the selection of this same motorcycle around the country become as complicated as picking out sweet watermelon or grapes in the grocery store? Could this selection process be anymore of a crap shoot? Everyone sees (has) the same shell, but not everyone tells the same story concerning its mechanical functioning. I went to purchase an 1125R yesterday at Dallas HD, but held back because of the stories I continue to read here, as well as the $1000.00 dealer mark up. For 13 large could a Chevy Aveo be a more reliable means of transportation? Someone please chime in here and help me understand. I know this company is small, but growing one; however, shouldn't we as the consumer expect more in terms of reliability and functionality from Buell? I never hear of problems like this with Honda Cars and motorcycles for example; although, I am sure they have their problems as well.

Well, if you want to hear of a problem about a Honda car try the 2005 Honda Civic a buddy of mine has that just ate it's transmition so now he has a $1500 bill. Food for thought.

Yeah, I do understand about the frustration in this. I plan to get an 1125R around June, but am waiting to see what happens with the electrical bug.

Cataract2,

You are right on there. As bad as I want that 25 aniv edition stamped on the clip ons, I'm willing to wait until they work out all of the quirks...like hard starting, poor charging, etc. But my buddy has a 2002 Honda 954 (which to me was the best liter class bike they've made to date) He has over 70,000.00 miles and not a single mechanical problem. He couldn't understand it when my clutch cable snapped at 15,000 miles on the XB9R. His has yet to fail and he rides a lot harder than I do. He already felt my bike was underpowered and all the times my bike had been in the shop has soured him on ever buying a Buell. Now the best Buell ever (arguably more powerful and faster than his) is on the streets with even more problems. Just when I thought I'd finally win him over to Buell. Damn!

I’ve had six Buells since 1996.
S1 Lightnings’s, Thunderbolt S3, XB9R and a XB12X
I went through the recall years, my 99 S3 was the first model year with Fuel Inj. Buell fixed all my issues.
My 2003 XB9R was the best Buell I ever owned. I had it for three years and it NEVER went back to the dealer for anything! I had that bike for three years and only put tires, brake pads and oil in it.
The only issue with the Uly was the kickstand, which Buell fixed.
I have over 150,000 Buell miles in the last 12 years.
I am getting a 1125R in March. Can’t wait!

I have had some electrical issues. I needed a jump start a few times and using the on board diagnostic mode along with my battery tender, it obvious that something is not right. I'm very fortunate to live near a dealer that has some great support for Buell owners and the lead Buell mechanic that is following some information so that we can reach a solution.

Yes, its a pain in the ass to deal with this and 13 large is big chunk of money to put down on a bike....

however....

I went out for a laid back 48 mile ride today. I have been dealing with horrific tooth pain as I await a root canal tomorrow morning. I just needed to go out and focus on something else for a little while. ..
This bike is such a sweet ride... I pulled the front wheel up with out even realizing that it came up. I leaned a little further on a few turns that were not covered in sand... I stretched my legs out on the highway.. cruised around the mall.. had a great time and for the two hours that I was out there, I did not feel any pain in my tooth.

Once I got back home I had to deal with what has become routine.. check voltage, plug in tender, check voltage again and document it all for service..

personally speaking, that 2 hour ride made my day today, regardless of the small issues.

We don't always hear the happy stories on here, because they are out riding....

Personally I think that the majority of the 1125Rs out there are pretty darn perfect. I do not know how many are out there already, but I am guessing at least 700 and there are very few of us that are suffering from issues.

I would really like to support Buell because I genuinely believe that their intentions are noble, and they aim to make us all happy.
I too will posting more information as my issues are dealt with.

If you go to a Honda, Yamaha, or BMW forum, you will see just as many problems and probably of greater severity.

Internet forums are a black hole for problems. You're probably seeing 90% of all the complaints in the country, and NOT hearing about 90% of the bikes that have been perfect....

Nick,

Looks like you had the perfect Novocain. I also have never had more fun than my 2003 XB9R. But I have been seriously considering the 848, but read that it is not comfortable. It got great reviews in motorcyclist mag this month. When they finally review this 1125R (post production model), I hope it is free of the quirks you are experiencing. If not, it will prove disastrous press for Buell. I'm sure Erick himself will be on the production line with a wrench in his hand assembling that one.

For 13 large could a Chevy Aveo be a more reliable means of transportation?

I think that goes without saying, and the Chevy probably gets better MPG too. If you intend to use the 1125r as your only form of transportation, you might want to wait until this bike is fully sorted out. In all reality, the issues with the 1125r are being addressed as well "speak" and the fix(es) will be along shortly.

Bingo on the "internet-amplification" of the problems.

There are a bunch of owners here on BadWeB and only 3 or 4 with serious problems.
Then a little larger group with little issues.
And finally the majority that aren't posting, cause they're out riding and grinning.
Oh yeah, then there's those of us who are making our bikes personalized and sharing ideas for change.

I'm quite happy with my new 1125R.
It's better than my 03'Bolt was and that's saying a lot.

Zack

Just an analysis of the informal electrical issue poll, of the 15 repondents:

7 with electrical issues of varying severity

7 with no reported electrical issues

You guys have convinced me that maybe buying the Buell will still be a good move, as Buell seems to be serious about addressing the issues. I still have a problem with the 1000.00 dollar mark up. Is that legal? Plus, we seem to be all in this together in a sense, as we feel each other's pain concerning our bikes (sort of like those evil twin brothers on G.I. Joe) I've been attending Bike Week in Myrtle for three straight years on my 03 XB9R and sure would look good cruising down the strip on that 1125R. I trust that Buell will continue to stand behind this product. Thanks guys

Snack, nothing is making you go to that particular dealer to buy it. Shop around. I see your in GA. Go check out Stone Mountain HD. When I was stationed there I always heard good things about them. (Oops, sorry Snack, I think I clicked on the wrong profile when I wrote this. My mistake.)

Use great care in drawing conclusions from internet info. You, on badweb, are looking at about a 5% slice of the Buell pie. Factor that for the number of folks who lurk vs post and you'll see you are light years short of a reliable sample population.

I try to learn and use the information to augment what I know and to temper other sources.

Simply reading it and declaring it to be so is not a good practice.

The 1125R, in my opinion, is an excellent motorcycle.

im going to be brutally honest- if it comes down to the 1125 and an aveo then maybe the 1125 just aint for you lol

its like cop stories, you always hear about a cop shooting a kid or some BS like that, but how often do you hear about the good they do - same thing.
people really dont want to post every day they have a great, problem-free ride. thatd be annoying fast.

900 carefree miles here

Snackbar,

This is the location on Centerville?

I paid list for mine from them. Out the door price was list + reasonable shipping + setup, etc.

I've heard Buell raised the MSRP to $13k from $12k. Perhaps that's it?

Go for the 1125r. Mine's been fine.

My mind tells me to keep my mouth shut here but something else is telling me to type. First of all, I am absolute enough as I've been in and continue to be a business owner operater, in this arena...THOUGH NOT EVEN A GLIMPSE OR A COMPARISON TO BUELL'S LEVEL, JUST AN INSITE TO THE BUSINESS AND PERSONAL LEVEL EXPERIENCE THAT DRIVES ONE TO STAND TO HIS/HER PRODUCT AND KNOW WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE FOR HIS/HER FUTURE BUSINESS AND PERSONAL SUCCESS...TAKE CARE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS...that solutions will be found and recalls...if needed, issued. Not one customer will be left out in the cold in the end...although getting to that end might be considered chilly to a minority. There ARE MANY 1125R'S OUT THERE WITH NO ISSUES WHATSOEVER AND THUS MIGHT BE IGNORING YOUR ISSUES? JUST HOW MANY HAVE BEEN SOLD NOW COMPARED TO HOW MANY HAVE FOUND COMPLAINT TO VIEW or VOICE HERE? My views are not to say that no one should be worried or bothered by these problems with a new design but they do happen, even on megabuck one off custom builds with no limits...THERE ARE COUNTLESS PROBLEMS THAT COST TIME AND MORE MONEY TO RESOLVE. I am only trying to offer some sort of patience factor, if you will, concerning what will be in the end...a very simple issue to resolve. Buell will not let anything pass even if it costs his inc the coin. That same determination and drive is what brought about his/your 1125R to this point. There is simply too much too loose and soooo much to maintain and gain to correct these issues that no one should worry toooo much that a solution will be found. Time and $'s is all anything related to this are all that is required. WE'VE paid for this purchase and it is up to the manufacture to find resolve. That is the American Way, Why We Bought and I believe Why Buell Will Satisfy Any Situation in the end. I recommend that we all try, as we collectively have...keep up with constructive recommendations and or information that positively helps speedy this process. Peace out and ride safe!

Yes, it's actually the other way around. It's illegal for Buell for tell dealers what to charge, it's price fixing. That's why MSRP is a suggested price. You of course are free to find another dealer who charges less. That's the beauty of competition.

Tell you what, buy your 1125r from the dealer in Raleigh, NC, and I'll ride it out to you for free. : )

Snackbar64,

I wouldn't pay the $1000.00 mark up. It seems there are plenty of dealers that will sell at list or better, but you might have to travel out a little. As for buying it, if you don't need it now I would wait. It seems to be a good bike, but some do have issues and I hope Buell will sort them out. I did say some not all. Why buy a bike that may have the issues we are talking about or possibly more that have not shown up yet. Give Buell a chance to solve them so you can avoid possible multiple trips to the dealer and anger. Then again maybe you won't have problems like others. There is obviously no guarantees of problem free if you wait just like anything. I personally just wouldn't take my chances yet.

One of the reasons I feel this way is that I bought one of the first Ulys that came out. I was also one of the unlucky ones that got one with a serious pinging issue that only seemed to be a 2006 problem. These seemed to be few and far between, but I got one. Had I waited and done a little more research or possibly a lot longer test ride who knows. Maybe things would have been different, maybe not. I'm not bitter anymore at least I try not to be. I still like Buells and with the help of a deer the bike is gone. It just made me a little more careful about new models.
Good Luck.

keep in mind too - the whole thing about '1000 over msrp' or whatever is probably OTD cost - which can include shipping and prep fees, title work etc. it'll be hardpressed to find one for 11,995. some have gotten it, but very very rare

Gainesville Harley sells theirs at MSRP with no shipping costs or fees. It was 11,995 + tax and tag. Doesn't get much better than that

Yeah, go kick around on some BMW sites for awhile.....

Given the electrical issues reported, I wouldn't even wait till next year to pick up an 1125R. Find a dealer that will be reasonable (Here in SW Missouri, they have $12,500 on the 1125R, I dunno what the rule is on freight/prep), and buy what you like, Aveo or otherwise.

Internet amplification for sure. I have one of the bikes with electrical issues. It's a minor issue that I have no problem waiting for Buell to sort out. It has not stopped me from enjoying saddle time. The only thing I've been put out as a result is (oh horror) having to decide if I need to put it on the tender when I get back home.

Of all the post on issues here, I can only remember 2 that have caused serious inconveniences. (Sorry Intrex and Mike)
