The oil check procedure is pretty entailed for this bike. It involves riding the bike (recommends 5 miles) to bring the temperature up, letting it idle for 3 minutes on the stand, and then letting it set for several minutes after it is shut down. Then the oil dipstick can be checked. It's pretty crappy out here in Ohio, so using this procedure isn't going to be an option at this time, but I wanted to make sure that it had enough oil (it's a dealer trust issue). If I check the dipstick with the bike on the side stand, the oil doesn't even register on the stick. If I set on the bike and make it upright, and then check the stick, I get a reading that is way above the "overfull" mark. I'm hoping that the dealer got this right, because I have no way of verifying that the oil amount is correct. Any thought on this? | ||

My Tuono(Rotax990) has about the same procedure. I usually just warm it up for a couple minutes, at least until the cold light goes off, then check it. It hasn't used any. | ||

When you're checking the oil on the sidestand and the engine is cold you should get a reading of some oil on the dipstick. If not add some in small increments until it show on the bottom of the dipstick. All the bikes I set up seemed to be a little low in the oil department. When you get a chance to do the check after a ride double check the oil reading using the procedure you mentioned above. Eric | ||

Don't add oil unless you've got the oil really warm and checked it via the owner's manual recommended procedure. Otherwise, there is an extremely good chance you will be overfilling it. | ||

Anon- how about a "cold check" spec as referenced in the setup checklist? It notes (sorry, don't have it in front of me at the moment) something like "verify cold oil level" before the warmup / test ride process. I couldn't see any reference to what "cold level" actually is though. Is it a dry dipstick? A dipstick that gets wet when you straighten up the bike cold? Inquiring minds want to know, so they don't overfill ;) Maybe that could be the first mod - a dipstick long enough to show an "OK-Cold" level? | ||

I guess I'm corrected. Thanks Anon, I just didn't like test riding the bikes without any oil showing on the dipstick. When I checked it after the test ride it was still below the max line on the dipstick. | ||
