The virus definitions were just updated by all the vendors this morning. Your ISP probably has some sort of formal review process, and somebody did not panic soon enough, or they just update at midnight every day or something. To complicate things, one of the main places that tracks these kind of outbreaks (the internet storm center) had a disk crash, and is not updating today. So if your ISP was depending on them for alerts, they did not get it. Also, if the attachment is an encrypted zip file, where the decryption password is contained in the email body (i.e. "enter foobar to unlock this zip"  , then the automated virus filters at your mail gateway cannot see into the zip file to scan it. Oconnor: How do you shrink pics to fit on ibooks? I'm assuming you mean how to resize them so they show completely on the screen. If all you're wanting to do is resize, try using GraphicConverter. Depending on how new your iBook is, you may already have it installed. Scale images with the scale function...menu choice Picture->Size->Scale. If you need tips on GraphicConverter use, shoot me an email. | ||

Still been thinking about the Firebolt XB12 and went and looked at an '05 today. I just had to share how sharp the new Thrust Blue color is - just awesome. The amber wheels look especially nice contrasted up with the blue bodywork. So...DaveS...how cold did you say it was in Wisconsin in April?  | ||

HELP!! I CAN'T QUITE GET OVER THE FENCE!!! EX-UJM'ers have to help me out. I've been riding since 1974 off and on an have had eight bikes, and used to roadrace some in the late 70's. My current bike is a ZRX 1200R Kawasaki. I really really like the Buells, and have daily looked at every web site and forum that there is for the past 4 or 5 months. I totally love them until I ride one. I took a new XB9R for a demo ride about 3 months ago, and just yesterday rode a HD salesmans racekitted XB9 for a few minutes (with a flat spot). I feel I would have to flog the motor to death to get it to move as compared to my 1200 Kawasaki. The big kawasaki is a "twist and shout" affair, whereas the XB was, "I hope I don't get hit from behind while I'm trying to speed up" When I got back on the ZRX, it had power (120hp) and comfort, and at over 35,000 miles, reliability second to none. It has storage space etc, etc, etc,. Here's the problem. It has no personality at all. It looks good and sounds good w/ Yosh slip-on. It does just about everything well. Even in the twisties it can be made to scoot along quite well if necessary. I'm 50 years old and really don't want to run up at 155 mph (that's another story) It's not so much about the getting the 9 or the 12, or a tuber because my current bike would inhale them powerwise. I don't want it to be just about how far my speedo needle moves around the dial, but nonetheless that aspect is still there and something to consider. I hope I've grown mature enough as a motorcyclist to understand that there will always be someone faster than I, but my biggest question is, does the personality of the Buell outweigh the lack of power, smoothness, and possibly reliability issues??? Even when I rode the race-piped 9, I was waiting for the arm straightening power that never came when I twisted its (small) tail. I like the tubers too, but once again, how did you ex-jap liter / sport bike guys get over the power difference? Did you at first miss your jap bike's power and all that they did so well when you first got your Buell? I can't have two bikes, and besides, it is my only transport. I don't want to find myself now 25 minutes behind my buddies on Angeles Crest Highway trying to think up excuses why I made the switch to a Buell for no apparent reason other than "Its different..." Please tell me honestly if you initially had reservations about your Buell and how you got over them (if you ever did!). Looking forward to reading your replies. jdilpkle | ||

Joe: No problem...... There are a host of us here on the cusp of our sunset years who still carve corners. We've learned, having spent foolishly and lavishly, in false pursuit of the illusion that foreign means more sophisticated and more reliable. Time was the Buells reliability rivaled that of mid-70's Harley-Davidsons, salient difference being that the Buells at least ran when they got to the dealers. Buell is different in every sense and that's much more than a slogan...or was it a credo....perhaps a motto...whatever. At Buell, the factory has Elves scurrying around like bugs on a hot plate. Erik has pulled together a collaboration of talent from around the world fit to be included in the next edition of "Organizing Genius". From India, Mexico and Canada they came, the product of some of the world's finest schools, imbued with synchronized passions and challenged by each others talent, to create the most satisfying motorcycle they could. You may have noted that there are very few mechanical compaints (this addresses one of your metrics) about reliability. That's because the Buell XB platform is on a ballistic trajectory toward becoming the (please read this carefully and literally) THE MOST RELIABLE MOTORCYCLE EVER MADE. Go back; read that again. Power to a motorcycle is like breasts to a woman.....in that "more" is highly over-rated, makes great locker room and bar talk, but brings little to the REAL party. Motorcycles are meant to be RIDDEN not simply propelled forward, judged only by terminal velocity. Smiles, I submit, are properly measured in miles not miles per hour. As an aside, we have a friend and collaborator, Mr. Aaron Wilson, who has recently fired a Buell down the salt at The Bonneville Salt Flats at over 208MPH and locked in a new record in the 206 range. So "it can't be done" is an inaccurate statement, but if you want to go that fast you need a beard, red hair and lots more school. Several years ago some of us here decided to take a crack at Landspeed Racing and have enjoyed MANY sucesses in America and Australia. You will note that about 50% of the 150MPH club at Bonnneville is made up of folks on Buells. There may be faster motorcycles, there are no more fun folks to hang with than us. Hang with?....yeah, that's where I was going. From the first time Erik Buell and I gather a schnaggle of Buell folks in Topeka, KS in 1990 it's been pretty much a non-stop parade, with fabulous new folks arriving daily, of the world's most interesting people. Hang around here for a few days and you'll be amazed. Bottom line....go ride the Buell. If you have any trouble finding one to toss a leg over, drop me a note and I'll handle the arrangements. Ditto the factory tour if you are ever in the Milwaukee area. You meet a couple of the Kooks that make these things and see the passion within, you'll be hooked forever. I'm with ya Jdilpkle - currently riding a Kawasaki ZZR and have demo'd the XB12R. The lack of smoothness on the engine has been my primary concern, but the bike has so many other qualities that it is still in the running for me. It is a strange feeling though when hopping off of the XB12 and getting back on my Kawi (paintshaker effect as the guys here say - versus zero vibration on my inline 4). What I loved about the XB12 though was that it had good wide ratios on the tranny that very little shifting was needed, leaving me more time to manage the bike. My demo ride was short - and based on the recommendation from the guys here, I need to take a longer ride and have a "conversation" with the bike - which I hope to do soon. I was out looking at them again and they simply have killer looks and I may ultimately give into my temptation solely on that and then fall in love with the bike's handling and other known good qualities later. Jdilpkle- I have a tuber and when I go riding with my friends on their Jap bikes I'm never 25 minutes behind them. Angeles Crest is twisty, right? The XB's can carry as much or more corner speed than anything out there. I know the top end power is not up there but do your friends go over 140 on a regular basis? Just wait 'till you're on a buell and you whack open the throttle exiting a corner. Torque. And the XB'ers will tell you that the new Buells are stone reliable. Heck so is my later model Tuber. None of that matters if you dont like the way they feel, but I dont know any Buell owners who regret having their bikes. Good luck, and talk to Dave, he has a really cool deal going. | ||
