Yes sir, my MAC Plus with 4 Megs of RAM and the external 2400k modem, that was the way to surf the net. That thing ran Excel, Quark, man you couldn't even load those programs today much less open a document with only 4 meg. |

I'm going to look at a used 1998 Buell S1 this Saturday. 17k miles and I'm going to trade for my like-new YZ450F. I'm a dirt-biker and don't really know what I'm getting into. The bike sure is beautiful, and the chain er uh drive belt sure is cool. Anyway, is there anything in particular I should know or look at? |

Motomadman... you have excellent taste (in both bikes). When you get it, we can tell you stuff to go over that will make your life as a Bueller a much happier one. Nothing that would really be a "buy / don't buy" decision though, just little stuff that is a lot easier to fix up front rather then after it breaks. I can't think of much that could be wrong with an S1 such that it would run well, but that I would not want to buy it. Some of the pricier things that could be broken, and would be unusual but not unheard of, would include possibly leaking shock ($650 stock $1200 penske replacement), leaking base gaskets ($500 or so in labor), leaking forks ($350 in labor), worn 2nd gear dogs (making it jump out of gear) ($150 parts and your own 4 hour labor). Another thing to check would be the 5th gear drive assembly, with the bike turned off, have the owner push it forward while you listen near the front belt drive sprocket for "crunchy bearing noises", that is about 6 hours labor and $50 to $550 worth of parts, depending on how crunchy the bearings have been and for how long. At that milage and age, you are within 5k to 15k miles of a new belt and new isolators as well. Not sure on the S1 if you have to detach the swingarm or not, on my M2 it was a pretty big job, probably 6 hours shop time and $350 worth of parts. But after that, you can ignore the belt completely (no lube, no nothing) for another 20k to 35k miles. Don't be alarmed at how the thing looks at idle, vibrating like a paint shaker. When under power, it should be remarkably smooth, especially around cruising speed. You will hear all sorts of top end noise, especially if the intake is non stock (like a forcewinder). It's normal. Should not be a lot of bottom end noises though, nothing clanking down there. Newer XB9's with the race kit seem to make noises that could be mistaken for crank bearings, but the old 1200's don't (that I have heard). The main thing you should know? The S1's are *very* special bikes, and I doubt the world will ever see another production bike like it. It will take a little lovin in the garage, but be well worth it. Buy it. |

Moto, Reepicheep speaks with straight tongue. You might take a look at some previous discussion on the subject: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/4062/82374.html?1099346913 I'm a huge S1 fan, so factor that bias into your evaluation of my remarks! Reep, you're slipping, no mention of the oil pump drive gear... rt |

Reepicheep & Road_thing - Thanks a ton for the good advice! I'm thinking there's a very good chance this deal will go through and the S1 will soon adorn my garage. If so, ... "I'LL BE BACK" ... quite often I'm sure. Currently I frequent www.thumpertalk.com, a very good dirt/four-stroke site. With the Buell I'll have to acquire some new mechanical skills, as well as more standard sized tools. I'll have a lot to learn. Here's a link to a pic of the bike. Sure is a beauty!! http://www.sonic.net/mzwilli/pics/BuellS1.jpg |

I'm hopin' to get me an ATK 605...the dirt bike of my dreams. The S1 was, and is, the streetbike of my dreams. Seeing a bike as clean as the above makes me realize just how filthy mine is! That bike has the Buell race aircleaner, a Vance and Hines pipe as far as I can tell, the 1st generation Showa shock, the billet footpegs, the original brake rotor, the Blast battery conversion, Corbin seat, a fender eliminator kit for the license plate, a fender from an M2/S3, and who could miss the Buell axle bolt covers. I see a small bag behind the windscreen...maybe the YoDude kit? That's a cool street tracker behind it. It looks like a '98 S1W. |

hmmmm, makes a guy wonder what could happen if Willie G and Erik actually collaborated on a new sportbike, something perhaps along the lines of a V-Rod'esque powerplant in a totally Buell'esque chassis? Mr. Davidson is a regular at the Love Ride, Mr. Buell is not. so why was Erik out here THIS year? makes a wondering man wonder and a pondering man ponder. i have no answers, only questions, and... ...and a quiet, glowing lust for such an American motorcycle. build it Willie. build it Erik. we will come. Don't wonder and ponder. It is simply that the weather in WI is so bad now |

i disagree - not about the weather in Wisconsin, but that THAT is why Erik was standing next to Jay Leno and Willie G in front of a bazillion people at the Love Ride. the weather is bad EVERY year in WI about this time, right? (i've never been to the great state of Wisconsin - someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.) so why was Erik out here THIS year? |

Motomadman, That bike looks real clean. Black/Nuke Blue S1W's are the bestest of all the Buells (I'm a tad impartial, maybe). Tough to do better than one like that if the mechanicals are in as good a shape as the cosmetics... Al |

Motomadman, After seeing AL's S1 last year at the TorqueFest, I fell in Love. (not with Al!) In January I bought a used Metallic/Nuke Blue S1W through the Badweb classifieds. It's been a great bike. I love the minimalistic looks, and I just love the way this bike rips up the streets. After 10,000 miles, the only problem I've had is a cracked exhaust, and keeping rubber on the dang thing! Buy it! You won't regret it! Bart |

It was a joy having Erik and Shawn around for 3 days this weekend! Higbee treated a bunch of us to lunch at Newcombs ranch on Saturday and Erik bought us Dinner. How FREAKIN COOL IS THAT!!! It was a rare opportunity to sit and talk shop and I'm really grateful to have had the opportunity. THis wasn't Erik's first Love Ride - said he did one a few years back too. Hopefully he'll be back in town more often! =) I'll see if I can round up some pics from the weekend. |

Eric stated in one of the Brit bike mags that a V-Rod Buell is basically never going to happen. It's huge, heavy, and only makes 15hp more than the XB12 motor. |

Erik, being a smart guy and all, is never gonna tell me, you, or the British media what's in the pipeline. when he says "never", well, could be he's just being a shrewd businessman. |

It's huge, heavy, and only makes 15hp more than the XB12 motor. Good observation and good reasoning. But that can be interpreted as we'll never see a VROD Buell "in it's current form" Myself, I've become a fan of the minimalism of the XB powerplant. |

Just a heads up, especially to European Buellers, there seems to be a fresh outbreak of a new Sober virus variant running amok. It could be in multiple languages (depending on your domain), and will include an attachment of COM, PIF, SCR, BAT or ZIP. Delete 'em, and update your virus definitions. Most updated their signature databases this morning. |

Hi Reep, Just a few minutes ago I got an AOL5585.zip file, but the installed AVG filter did catch it. Strange thing is that my provider uses the same virus killer, as a service on mailboxes. I thought, that I wouldn`t need to double the same work then, but I refreshed the anti virus database, just to get rid of the annoying Windows remark, that the virus database had to be updated. How can it pass the provider, which is supposed to update very frequently ? Hans |
