I'm back in St Louis...Sorry I didn't have time in Cali to contact anyone but the wedding and family just took up all my time...I did get up to Palomar Saturday but it was a quickie and just had time to fit it in...My biker nick name here in STL is "Mother" so the restaurant on Mt Palomar of the same name was kinda neat to find...Lots and lots of bikes up there and the only real LEO's of the whole trip...As Jerry and I rode west from AR into OK there were three or four staties and a sheriff but they were obviously looking for someone and not traffic enforcement as the radar detector didn't even burp once...Didn't see another until a US Border Patrol in Cali...We just flew through OK, TX, NM and AZ...And I did the Kingman to Barstow mostly at triple digits...High speed on the GPS was 123 on that crossing which would have been about 132 indicated...I saw a low of 26 degrees when leaving Jerry in Flagstaff early in the morning and a high of 107 in the Imperial Valley...The southern desert on I-8 kicked my •••...In Gila Bend AZ I spoke with a beemer rider from Scottsdale and he showed me a way north over AZ 85, I-10, AZ 101 around Phoenix and then I-17 back up to Flagstaff...So I never did make it to Tucson to see my brother and his family...Have to take a plane to do it... Now I normally don't stop at PINK bars but apparently Jerry does because he led us to one in Gallop...I'll let him tell the rest of the story... And the place we stopped so that Jerry could get a pic of the Continental Divide...Seems the Santa Fe runs right through their rest room... And the first rest stop in TX...Geez, you guys really know how to impress...Marble in the men's room???...I have never seen a highway rest area with as nice buildings and landscaping and lighting...And then the next one in NM was quite a let down... For the posts about Buell dealers...I am pretty sick of the dealer I have been taking my bike to. Everytime I go in they find something else that needs replacement/work. Most recently I took it in for new brakes and now there are "some serious issues" with the engine. I am pretty fed up with HD, especially since this apparently happened when a mechanic was testing the brakes. Does anyone know how the maintenance is on an Aprilia? Great pics by the way! | ||

Racerboy, glad to hear you're back home safe and sound. thanks for the guided tour of the Ozarks - wish we coulda had more time to do the "fun" stuff before the superslabbing began, but reality was looming for both of us. yeah, it was damn cold pulling out of Flagstaff behind you that morning, but by the time i got to the Grand Canyon (yeah, i DID take the long way home... ) i was peeling out of gear, and grinning from ear to ear. no further LEO encounters for me, save for a VERY close call in Austin, NV... i've started the epic process (even more epic than the ride) of documenting the trip here. i was bordering on "monkey butt" upon arrival at the 'Dome, but i'd have turned around the following morning and done it all over again in a heartbeat! BTW that is the route I take when I go to San Diego. | ||

I am still waiting on the insurance company to come through with the final deal. I have checked out how to erase the salvage stuff, so today it is back down to the dealer to examine the bike more closely and talk to the mechanic. My pictures of the damage seem minor, but my judgement is worth very little on this. Parting the bike out is probably worth it if I have to accept the total, but will take more time and room than I have. And my better half is already getting very mutinous about another bike. Several weeks of me moaning and zoning (on Oxycodone) and seeing the cracked helmet, ripped jacket, flattened boots, and road rash have gotten her a little....contentious. So a quick repurchase action with the insurance money would be wiser than anything more drawn out. So I will take the opportunity to "test ride" a bike and go for a ride today. Thanks for all the great advice. | ||

Quick non buell question about garage doors. Well, I don't want the garage door to fall on my buell, so its sort of related :/ Anyway, I got a used opener, and got it all hooked up, but have no instructions for either the opener or the door. The only part I don't know for sure yet is where to anchor the opener attachment point to the door attachment point. As I look at it, it seems to me the higher the better, on that very top panel, and best to add a beam of some sort all the way across the door. There are mounting points about half way up that top panel, but it would be easy enough to make my own closer to the top of that panel, like 3/4 of t he way to the top. Thoughts or experience anyone? The opener track is already very high relative to the garage door height. Thanks! | ||

Reep: Here's what mine looks like.  6" or so from top of door to mounting point on door. 14" or so from top of door to mounting point above the door opening. Hope this helps! rt | ||

Reep, If that is a Genie: Mine is the screw type drive, but probably the same for a chain type as well. 1. At the header above the door, determine where the leading edge of the door travels, height-wise, by raising and lowering the door repeatedly until you can determine the highest point above the floor that the door attains. 2. Measure this height from the floor (with the door closed). Hopefully your garage floor is flat, becasue you then go to the door opening and measure from the floor up to the attachment point. If the floor is uneven, borrow a 6 foot level, and from the original measurement point (while on the ladder) extend the level so that it passes through the measurement piont and touches the door header above the garage door, keeping the bubble level. Since this is a sectional door, now measure 2.5 inches above this point. This is the anchor point for the rail system. 3. If this in any way interferes with the springs, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE SPRINGS (sorry, they said this on the instruction forms). Just move the attachment point above the springs (not below). 4. At this point, if you are not on the door header (i.e. dry wall)you need to add a 2x8 anchored to two wall studs with spike nails (I used 3 inch deck screws). 5. The attachment point on the door itself is described as (for sectional doors) "no lower than the highest set of door rollers. From the picture, you may be too high, I cannot tell. Some other info: 1. For a 7' 6" door, the power head (opener) should be 10' from the door. For an 8' door, 11' back from the door. 2. Before attaching power head, make sure you are in the center of the garage, as measured from both sides. 3. Depending on how old the door is, the newer doors use much lighter springs. With the opener, expect one to break sometime in the next year or so. Replace with a heavier set (always replace both springs). | ||

Go to www.liftmaster.com or for installation and manuals. Chamberlain Group (Lift Master) makes openers for Sears also. The instructions as for installation are pretty generic. The mounting point of the opener to the door should be as close to in line with the top set of rollers as possible. Is this a wood door or steel? Single or double car? Any other questions drop me an email. I'm the product development engineering manager for a large garage door manufacturer so I kind of know garage doors. | ||

Terry!!! Yeah - you ought to pop in more often. I ought to publicly thank you/Jim Winter/Hal's racing for all the help - especially Dan Bilansky when he was at Vegas for being so patient in answering all the questions about my fuel mapping AND telling me that I wasn't scaring him too badly on the track up there during the racing. Thanks everyone! Garage door is up and running, not explosions or smoke, though there were some "fabrication moments" that could have been lifted direct out of an episode of American Chopper (well, minus the good tools anyway). And thanks for the details Tbolt... based on what you describe I over engineered everything (when in doubt, add  ) That gives me good piece of mind. Now back to our normally scheduled buell discussions... | ||

Shortly thereafter I see a cruiser pull into the lot, loop around, and then into the same spot I parked. I thinkin cool, a Harley just parked next to my Buell. Props eh? I finish. I go out. I get a better look. It's a Honda. Oh well, it felt good while it lasted... |
