After seeing you both at Bonneville the last couple of times, it was pretty obvious to me that you and your Dad were extremely close. That closeness alone, for me, was pretty cool to see. Plus it even shows between you and Melissa. Please pass my condolences to the entire family. Hang in there dude.

ChopTop- I'm probably too young to fully understand how you feel right now, but I am sorry about your Dad. I know you can never "get over" Something like that but I hope the time comes soon when you can think of him with happiness that he was there rather than sadness at his loss.

God speed to ChopPop. Nothing can be said to replace your Dad, but hopefully he is in a better place and did not suffer. As this group ages more and more of us will be in your shoes. My parents are 84 & 82 and I make every opportunity to be with them because the enevitable will happen and nothing can be done to prepare ourselves for that time.

Being an old fart, I would do it the old fashion way. I would slap a jack under the front of the rear shock mount, so the engine can be raised and lowered. Then I would continue to loosen the front engine mount where it bolts to the frame. After that I would double check the tightness of the bolts that attach the mount to the head. If thats ok, then I would loosen the bolts of the front rocker cover to see if I could gain a little clearance. If that did not do the job, then I would consider making some room by either removing some material from either the rocker cover or the mount. Preferably the rocker cover. Are you absolutely sure that there is NO clearance now? Most are very very close, but some clearance is a must in order to remove and replace the rocker cover.

A second option would be to remove the front mount and polish it; taking some extra time in the area where the mount now hits the cover. Then you would have a nice looking mount and no interference problem. If you do this, be sure to install NEW bolts and follow the manual on tightening procedure.

I have a 1999 Cyclone that I bought used. It started running rough after I brought it home so I thought the carb was dirty. I pulled it and cleaned it and replaced the accelerator pump diaphragm (dirty) and reinstalled. It ran great for about 20 miles then started cutting out again. I tried to start it yesterday but it wouldnt start. Just to make sure it wasnt a carb problem, I took the carb off of my 2000 Cyclone and put it on the 99. It still wouldnt start. I put the 99 carb on my 2000 and it started right up and idled great! I checked spark on the front cylinder of the 99 and it looked good. I also, tried to advance and retard timing to see if I could get it to start but no go. Anyone out there have any ideas? Im not sure what else to check.

Check the mounting bosses on the head VERY carefully for cracks.
Especially the the one on the right.
They have been known to break.

If the kickstand safety switch has gone bad, the bike will start, it just won't stay running if you put it in gear and let the clutch out. The first thing I'd do before I tried anything would be to establish if the bike is getting any spark. Take a plug out and ground it against the frame while trying to start the engine (don't do this anywhere near the exposed plug hole or you might get a firey surprise). You should be able to see a big blue spark.

I checked the spark and it was there. Not sure how strong it is but there was definetly spark. I cant recall if the spark was more blue or yellow though. I checked how plugs looked. I just put them in. They are new HD 6R12G's. They looked a little rich but not fouled. They probably have 100 miles or less on them, but I bought some new plugs that Im going to put in after work today.
What does "WOT" mean. Thanks for the ideas.

Wide Open Throttle. Sometimes after extended starting attempts, you get too much fuel in there and it'll never start. Opening up the throttle all the way will start a flooded engine.

Sometimes the fresh plugs also do the trick for some magical reason. They can spark just fine in open air, but under compression inside the chamber they don't.

What are you doing with 6R's in that bike.I thought 10R's went in everything.Change them damn things,now.
Drain carb and gas tank and start with fresh gas.Check the plug wires as they can corrode going into coil,NEW PLUGS,it's getting fuel to the carb,right?Check petcock for flow,did you have choke on,might have flooded it,happens all the time on these bikes.

V2win and BluzM2- Thank you both very much for helping me. I supported the motor and Checked all the mounting bolts, tried to wiggle everything back a little etc. When I tightened everything back up it was still Just Barely}} touching. So I did some old fashioned expert engineering and slid a very thin washer between my head and the bracket on the left. It has a bit of clearance now. I think after Laughlin I will take your advice V2win about polishing the bracket and taking a little off just to be more professional, and Ill remove the washer. I cant say enough how thankfull I am for the advice I get here. . By the way- I dont have a torque wrench so I just tightened the bolts at what seemed right- tight but not standing on it or anything lol. I really need a torque wrench.}

A favor to ask...

I'm in the process of revamping the American Sport Bike website/store to enhance the shopping experience. One of the changes being implemented is the ability to shop by bike model. I'll keep many of the same subcategories that we already have, but under each model. Lots of work, but I think it will be worth it. Our web site is a mess.

Now the favor: I need an clean image of each bike model. A nice simple image, hopefully straight on side view, much like those that were used in the Buell poster that was made a little while back. That image would be the lead image for each bike model category.

Does anyone have a nice gallery of digital images like that? Dave Gess, are you out there? Is this something that I can get from you?

Any help appreciated.

NOT, I REPEAT, NOT GOOD!
Under no circumstances would I put a washer between the mounting bracket and the head!
What your working on here is a critical area on these bikes. The mounting bracket is now ever so slightly crooked with the bosses on the head.

Also, the bolts used there are a special grade. Buell recomends NOT to reuse them after being installed.

And, there are specific tightening procedures for them.

Many a Bueller has broken them and/or the heads where they attach. This can be a catastrophic failure resulting in serious injury or death.

Now, go get two new bolts, beg, borrow, or buy a torque wrench, and do the job correctly before you get hurt.

OOps. Are you still out there V2win? What grade are the bolts ( I dont have time to get any from Buell, I'll have to go to the hardware store. I can borrow a torque wrench, but dont have a service manual yet. Can somebody tell me how many pounds they should be torqued to? I have to get it ready by tomorrow night or I'm screwed. So you think it would be better to let it rub than to have a washer in there. The polishing and making room will have to wait until I get back from Arizona.

You know, this situation brings up an interesting topic.

Working on a motorcycle or an airplane requires a different mindset than say working on a car, truck, etc. If your bolting an engine into a 69 Camaro and dont use a washer here or there, its probabley no big deal.

But its a totaly different story when puting your bike together. They are usually not over-enginered and each componant must be assemebled exactly right in order to be reliable and safe.

Always use the service manual.
Always torque the fasteners properly.
Always double check everything before you say its done.
Never rely on anyone else when it comes to your life.

You have mail.

You will be unable to get bolts the quality you need from any hardware store.

When Racerboy's broke, we tighten up the remaining bolt and limped home very slowly. I now carry two extra in my saddle bags when on long trips since they are so hard to get.

I know of others who have reused their old ones until they could get home while on a long trip but I could not recomend that here in a public forum.

I have the bolts, washers, and critical assembly instructions here with me now, and can bring them to the shop tomorrow if the Buell dealer nearest you doesn't have them. But I'm still 1.5 hours away from you, so I'm not sure if that helps you.
