Which reminds me of a question asked on the "Newlywed Game" decades ago. A woman was asked "In what foreign country will your husband say his favorite sports is built?"

Her answer: "Texas"

And speaking of that foreign country. Jim Witt - I understand that, in Texas, the chicken crosses the road in order to show the armadillo that it can be done.

>3Com (listed in Mr Witt's list, above) which purchased USRobotics

That was a spectacularly bad decision. Buy a modem company right as broadband takes off and everyone stops buying modems.

Anyone seen a motorcycle forum around here? Or should I check the Quick pages? ; )

Blake, Blake, Blake... The reason that corporations are taxed, is because, thanks to some clever conservatives and a willing Supreme Court, many years ago, Corporations are, legally speaking, individuals, with the same rights (except voting, why vote when you can buy) as individuals. The reason corporations are permitted to donate to political campaigns is that it is considered "free speech". Just listen to the conservatives scream about free speech when the discussion turns to limiting corporate political contributions. The "double taxation" of corporate dividends is an absolute hoax. The dollars are not taxed. The income is taxed when it changes hands. The corporation pays taxes on the incoming revenue stream, and the stockholder pays taxes when the revenue stream come to him(or her). Income should be taxed, regardless of the source. I am so irritated that my WAGES are taxed at a much higher rate than the dividend income stream of some rich fart who was fortunate enough to be born to money. To paraphrase a qoute; why is it that the only people complaining about class warfare are the ones who are winning the war?

Josh -- yessir, the quickpages are chock full o bike stuff . . .

btw, 3Com bought USR not for the modems (which were, as you correctly stated, a cheap commodity by then) but for the hubs and concentrators . . . since you're on the internet, there's about a 90% chance your traffic is going through at least one USR/3Com product (most likely a Total Control concentrator)

Let's see. So, you're saying that the revenue is taxed once when earned by the corporation and again when it is passed on to the shareholder...and double taxation is a hoax. Okaaaay, works for me. I feel sooo much better now!

Good morning Ladies & Gentlemen,

I have enjoyed reading the recent commentary, clearly many of you are more educated than you look!

Unfortunately I must digress, as I am desperately seeking a GPS (preferably rain resistant) to mount on my beloved S2.

Ideally the unit would not be terribly expensive and would be portable so I could take it inside at night while on the road and would have the ability to provide directions to a specific destination based on a pre-selected route.

I have been considering the Garmin V (IIRC).

Of course I would like a mounting system that works with the S2 and would keep the GPS from departing the bike unannounced.

I'd also like to be able to take the unit in the auto with me and use it to find addresses of various properties.

So.... Recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Now, back to your discussion of Macro and Micro Economics.....

Which reminds me - I caught a Monster Garage last night, guy built a smoker and BBQ out of an old VW Beetle, and towed it with a trike to locations for "catering". They're showing film of the trike pulling the bug, from the rider's perspective when suddenly the bars twist on the trike, and the next view is sideways from the now ground-mounted camera as the trike continues to run in circles, riderless. Seems the tie-rods let loose on the car. Both rider and passenger (the cameraman) escaped with only road rash. Cameraman looked like the had a huge strawberry on his face - I'm guessing no helmets for either of them. Very lucky.}

Dino, the income is taxed when the person receives it. The dollar is not taxed. Why do you pay property taxes EVERY year, instead of just once?

BikerJim99,
Try a new set of plugs. Sounds like your plugs may be fouled.

Arb,
The facts about the distribution of America's tax burden are apparently much less interesting than the fiction you are proffering. The wealthy pay far higher percentage of their income in federal income tax than poor or middle class and they pay a higher percentage now than they did under Reagan (yeah the "voodoo economics" as liberals love to call it, never mind that it instigated the prosperity of the '90's.)

Philly,
Please do explain to me why I should help fund health insurance for someone too cheap to buy it for himself. I pay for my own and it ain't that expensive. Every American is guaranteed basic health care, what else do we need? Better get to the doctor yourself, your heart is bleeding all over the place.

Blake,
I don't look at myself as a bleeding heart liberal but I must come in at this point and state that the Reagan economic plan was and is just what the slang term states "vodoo". I say this because economists have for many years looked at demand as the driving factor. It does not seem logical from a business point of view to increase supply if you have no demand.

As for this plan driving the 90's economy I must ask you to look at unemployment rates at the end of the 80's. They were high, and the one thing that drove the 90's economy the most was part of where you are today, the internet. It was the latest and greatest and everyone wanted a piece.

If however I am wrong, please enlighten me.

As for those who want to talk motorcycle, I will have to say I'm sorry right now. I just got my bike back from its 1000 mile service and I really don't want to talk about just yet.

Blake Ol' buddy,

I posted the corporate tax article not because of my political preferences, or my agreement/disagreement of tax laws, rather how, not why, the larger corporations are evading taxes. Something the average individual or smaller corporations (which there are many) couldn’t possibly accomplish. If you’re happy with them breaking the law, then that’s your prerogative.

I also don’t believe that Corporate American, in general, has the slightest interest in its workers, except for their personal gain and consumption. I’ve seen and experienced it. If you wish to be brainwashed into thinking otherwise, then again, that’s your prerogative.

US productivity rate "might" be the highest in the world marketplace (…not for long though …) however we're also one of the most over worked to achieve that status. It's pretty difficult nowadays to raise a family without "both" parties in the workforce and even then they’re working more hours than ever. Soon the entire family will be required to work, meaning the children too. <grin>

As far as outsourcing/exporting the Medical and Doctor care, Engineering and Architectural jobs, it’s already happening. Just as IT knowledge has been commodified, medicine and medical care isn’t far behind. The demand is going to be overwhelming once the baby boomers reach retirement. Asia seems the natural choice. I’ve known several people that have went to Mexico for dental care to save several thousands of dollars. As for Architectural/Engineering jobs, I’ve worked on numerous semi-conductor and pharmaceutical base-build projects using collaboration software and never stepped foot on the physical ground they were built on. BTW, many of which were overseas.

Schools, yea right, you’ve got to be kidding. You’ve been out of school to long my friend. The part of our education system that I’ve seen and participated in to this very day, is hardly “world class”. Oh, BTW, I’m not Mr. Doom and Gloom, rather I'm Mr. I Give A Fuck.

International Labor Organization.

U.S. workers feel burn of long hours, less leisure.

Cheers,

Just for information sake Blake, I pay $570.00 a month for my health insurance and I'm healthy. I also consider that pretty expensive. BTW, I just got a notice today in the mail that it's going up an non-discolsed amount July.

7/8 quart in transmission, 2.5 quarts in the swingarm. the technician could indeed have neede to make use of 4 individual one quart bottles of synthetic 20w-50 lubricant to service your XB. he just had 20 ounces left over.

XBduck. I know how you feel. I feel like I get raped every time I get work done at a dealer.

I once paid a certain Houston area dealer $500 to diagnose a bad speedo sensor. It was shorted and blowing the main fuse. They ripped my entire wiring harness apart. Then they spent an hour trying to figure out why my turn signals didn't work at which point I pointed out that they had failed to reinstall the turn signal flasher.

I was pissed, but what could I do? I hate being the asshole customer. I avoid the service department at all costs these days. I wish we had a dealer here who was on par with the likes of Modesto and the sponsors here.

In their defense, perhaps they put 2.5 quarts in your swingarm, and 1 quart in your primary? =3.5 quarts. Ask them for the half empty bottle you paid for if it makes you feel better : )

I hate to get into this right now, but I have some questions.......

As corporations are routinely criticized for "exporting" America how many of you *individuals* can say that you've never purchased a foreign product? I cannot say that.

If an American corporation sees a foreign corporation successfully winning market share in the US because of cheaper foreign labor how should they respond? Lose market share? Go out of business? Or possibly outsource some parts and/or labor?

Every time any American purchases any foreign product they are sending a message to "made in the USA" businesses. The message might be that their product is inferior, overpriced, unreliable, unsupported or just plain less desirable than the foreign product.

Those in the business community are reacting as best they can.

But it seems unreasonable to tell consumers they can purchase whatever they want from wherever they want then stand up and shout at the Corporations "How dare you export America!".

Nice slogan, though. I'm not sure what it really means.

And before you jump all over me realize I've spent the bulk of my career in the real estate development business. Developing American soil. With American labor, concrete, lumber, architects, engineers, etc., etc.

Now of course with the LAW being what it is we will SELL to anyone from any country as long as they pay in US dollars.

Hey Jim,

I'm not jumping on anyone, nor you. Since you asked, I can honestly say that I've never "knowingly" purchased "anything" made in China "if" I had the option to choose. I was rasied only to buy Amerian but we all know that's not possible nowadays but it was at one point in my lifetime. The problem I see, is that no one really gives a flying fuck anymore and simply buys whatever they wish and it's been that way for years (especially clothing). I also refused to shop at Wallymart or buy Harbor Frieght etc. too. Just like the machinist shit from HF, everyone knows it's generally crap but they buy it, modify it to make it work because it's cheap. This eventually drives the quality folks out of business. Of course, sooner or later the HF crap will get better and more expensive.

Just a big generational merry-go-round thing from my perspective, that will eventually catch up with us.

http://www.saeng.com/ has GPS, etc. mounts, but they aren't cheap. I recommend belt & suspenders, put a short leash on the GPS/camera so if the primary mount fails, you keep the gizmo. Very few electronic gizmo's work well after a 5 foot fall.... at 70mph.
