There is a bunch of consolidated information about the performance of Harley Davidson, dated 1/5/2004, located here:

http://investor.harley-davidson.com/downloads/factsheet.pdf

In that report (pages 24-28) one can see the entire units shipped by Buell since 1994. For the years that the BLAST! was about, it breaks down Buell shipments between the V-Twin and BLAST! models. I verified those numbers against the yearly reports, it all appears to be accurate, but it is entitled an UNAUDITED report. It doesn't include Q4 of 2003, however.

Of interest, 2002 Buell sold a total of 10,943 motorcycles, 4,056 of which were BLASTS! and 6,887 were V-Twins, so 37% were BLASTS!. In 2003 (as of Q3), Buell had sold 7,364 total motorcyles, and only 811 were BLASTS (or 11%). Buell had initially projected selling 12,500 motorcycles in 2003. The 10Q filing for the second quarter stated:

In the second quarter of 2003, Buell(R) motorcycle net revenue was down $5.0 million compared to the same period last year, on 1,367 fewer unit shipments. Production during the second quarter of 2003 was negatively impacted by a supplier issue, which reduced production during the quarter. Most of the lost production capacity was related to Blast(R) models, but all models were affected. Buell shipments in the second quarter of 2003 consisted of 1,804 XB models and 138 Blast models. The Company expects that normal production rates will resume by the middle of the third quarter of 2003. The third quarter of 2003 will also include the introduction of two additional new XB models.

If one was to extrapolate the third quarter performance onto the 4th quarter (dangerous assumption, but I personally believe that the 4th quarter will better the 3rd quarter performance by a sginificant margin, based on the economic turnaround, XB12 sales growth, etc), the entire 2003 unit sales would be 9,845, with 899 BLASTS! and 8946 V-Twins. I bet they clear 10,500 units sold once the actuals come out, but that is purely speculation on my part based on very little data.

So, not a banner year sales-wise for Buell, but I believe that 2004 will be much much better. Better economy, plus a full year of XB12 sales, word getting out of the much improved quality of the new XB models, and hopefully a new model to replace the S3 (I can dream!) should add up to a better year.

All FYI, I make no assurance of the accuracy of the info above, but it seems to cross check well with data straight from HDI's site.

OK, so I'd written about riding instruction books, but the 'puter crashed, and now I can't find the thread. So here goes again.

I didn't like "Twist of the Wrist" and "Soft Science" so much. Not very well organized - the info is there, but you need to read, distill and rearrange it on your own.

I recently read "Sport Riding Techniques" by Nick Ienatsch, author of "The Pace" and riding instructor for Freddy Spencer. Well writting, good instruction for things to practice - combined with interesting anecdotes.

I've used his book for drills for track days the last year, and it's given a nice focus.

I read, and am still reading "Sport riding techniques" also, and agree with Henrik, it is a great book. The drills are great. Had me practicing taking my Buell to around 100 mph then stopping as quickly as possible. You learn how long it really takes you. Also bringing the FRONT brake right to locking point and then releasing before you go over. Teaches you exactly where that point is. Simple stuff about your limits that need attention. It helped me a lot, being a relatively new rider... on the best motorcycle ever made.

Henrik,

I agree with you on TOTW2. It is almost to dry to read, well it is to dry to read word for word. My copy is full of yellow and orange highliter. Thus identifying the the pertinent from the extraneous. It makes it easier to reference and re-aquire the points of interest.

I don't have a copy of Nick's book, yet. It is on the shopping list though. I have been reading TOTAL CONTROL by Lee Parks. So far this has been a good learning tool. Very easy to follow and understand.

On the TOTW2 line, has anyone watched or have a copy of the video version? Impressions?

I've got one of the Twist videos. It was okay except for the attempt at lame humor with the goofball. I forget if it's #1 or #2. Haven't watched it in a year or three. Probably good if you don't want to read one of the above mentioned books, or just want to veg out in front of a tv and don't want to watch that '70's show.

Rocket/Henrik

while I agree with your ideas and your desire for a display of common sense, we all know that the latter is not at all common . . . . .

like everything, this fine idea has turned into an onion, to be peeled away, layer by layer . . . after wandering around the internet, no one can help but understand how the camel was designed, yes?

I'd love to the the idea come to fruition, with as little extra work for our system admins, who already do yoeman service for all of us here . .. .

Like Nevco, I, too, have wingmen that accompany me on most of my rides . . . they have helped keep me in one piece and smiling thorughout my riding life -- it would be woderful to have a place to memorialize the Ghost Riders of the Badweb (or whatever it finally becomes)

It's as simple as this. At the header page the purpose is defined and made clear. If under such sensitive circumstances as DEATH we cannot be trusted to use common sense then I say shove the idea. God damn Americans. Does everything have to have a bloody rule over there?

Rocket, this post pretty much started this "debate", i think.

can't tell from your words if you're just trollin' for Americans or not, so i'll take the high road and agree with you that WHATEVER the page is called, it'll be what it'll be, and what it'll be is a good thing. : )

so tell me again what's wrong with:

It's people like you that I think would give Brits a bad name, shitty comment like that because TWO people annoyed you !!

To you it may be comment made because you were annoyed, but as nice as you may be if I ever did get the chance to meet you, I would not want to because of things like that I read that you post !!

Not trying to start anything with you again, but that comment just pisses me off !!!

Ferris,
I like your idea, "Ride in Peace: A Motorcycling Memorial" Did not think something like a place where people could pay tribute to those who's passing has touched us would cause so many ripples.
Jim, how fast does that thing travel? How much does the rig weigh? It's a pretty wild set up, thanks for sharing.
Well lets see if things are on a lighter note tommorrow...

Rocket -- I must have mis-wrote, if you think that my stance on ANYTHING is that we must be ruled (a forgivible lapse of judgement considering the lack of depth of our knowledge of one another) . .. .

my point is that Homo Sapiens have a tendency to create frog-piles at the least oportune times . . . on this particular board, for instance, people who knew nothing about what they were spouting off over continued to spout off long after their ignorance (which, thank goodness, is curable) was illuminated . . .

it's sad but true that someone's widow/widower/surviving child could easily stumble over would very easily be seen as a damning of the recently departed loved one by some dipshit here on the board . . . . I'd like that to be avoided, and am willing to give up a little of what some mistakenly view as their right to spout off in any manner whatsoever, no matter what . . . .

kinda surprised you live in England, sir, and in the EU . . . given your professed desire for freedom above all else (with the possible exception of the world's coooooolest Saab {grin}), I would have expected you to be a gun-toting survivalist in one of those large swquare states out west

(tongue planted firmly in cheek on this last couple of phrase, for the humor impaired)

Bomber, I agree with you, it only takes one comment from someone, and I've read some that were I a survivor of the person that would really make me feel badly !!

Most people aren't out to intentionally hurt someone with their comments, but it does happen !!

I think Rocket has some issues he might want to deal with. Its one thing to sit in front of a computer and type away with inflammatory remarks about us AMERICANS. Its quite another to do so in person. We dont appreciate it one bit. America is the BEST country to live in, warts and all, thank you very much.

I have my eye on a S2. I already have an extra set of S3 saddle bags. Does anyone know if just the hardware to mount them on the S2 is available? If so do you know part numbers?
Thanks

V2Win,
There is a hardware mounting kit somewhat available, which also shows up sometimes in dealership sidewalk clearance sales. Don't know the part number, but I thought the service bulletin or installation instruction sheet in .pdf format was posted on the site here someplace.
