"As experienced Buelligans, we are familiar with the power delivery of our steeds and have respect for it."

That's a damn good point, Neil. Japanese bikes tend to have real wide powerbands, so while they have a lot of power, it also builds steadily. A Buell tends to hit you like a ton of bricks, it comes on way early by comparison.

Looks like I'd better get my baby in for her check up. Got a 99 fuelie.

I had a spark plug wire get caught between the air cleaner and the throttle on my truck once. Pretty hairy.

but the timing of these crashes comes at a bad time for a company that can barely keep its head above water.

Buell is is having financial difficulties? News to me. Ever hear of insurance? Buell/HDI have it to protect themselves against unfortunate unforeseen tragedies like this one. Let's not be overly dramatic.

If a failure in the mechanical operation of the bike is what can be shown to have caused the accident, then of course Buell/HDI should be held partially accountable. The rider is also partially responsible, he could have pulled in the clutch, or stood on the brakes, or jumped off the bike or any number of things to avoid accelerating into a post. I hope justice is served. Certainly no one at Buell would ever wish for such a tragedy to occur.

yes, ive heard of insurance, but that wont help if the jury awards punitive damages. fortunately that doesnt happen too often. as far as the companies financial shape, im guilty of assuming! i do know that in florida, they are not selling. the negative publicity is sure not what they need!

...and on the upside.

I stopped by a local auto store to get some items for the 12k on my Tiger. The guy behind the counter (29-23 or so) asks me what type of Buell I have. (I have a Buell sweatshirt on) We get to talking and he wants a new Firebolt. the conversation goes along and he seems that he has his mind made up even though his friends tell him to go Japanese.

Three years ago the question would have been "What's a Byu-el?" rather than "What type of Buell do ya have?". Product/Brand recognition is happening people.

Would this cause similar engine response if it was cracked/broken?

I was on a ride this spring, with a freind whos shaft broke, about 1/2 way through the ride, i dont recall it sticking wide open, more like, it was on steps, it worked at 2000 rpm, them 4000 rpm, and that was about it, a little duct tape and wirs ties and we were able to limp it home, i doubt we could have gone the 200 miles or so with a wide open throtle, so i guess the answer wold be no, plus if i remeber right, he never seemed out of control, just had this weird throtle problem, until he had to pull over because it had these steps, just passing along what happened

True, when I walk in a store with my helmet in my hand I get, "what do you ride?".
When I say a Buell, I hear which one more often than "what's a Buell?"

I believe the H-D and by extension Buell are self insured. This is not uncommon in large companies that sell a high risk product. The cost of any meaningful amount of insurance is so high that it is pointless.

H-D has not only cash but a line of credit that would cover jsut about any jury award that would actually hold up on appeal. Most of the really huge numbers you see flying about are over turned.

As far as the power being a surprise there was this buell employee, who shall remain nameless, a very accomplished rider who took his first Buell ride on an RS. Wound up the engine and dropped the clutch. Whoa Ya you shoul dhave seen the look on his face when that thing reared up for the sky. Fortunatly he is not just accomplished but calm and simply brough it back down.

I can't imagine what would happen if you did the same thin on an XB. FLIP is the word that comes to mind.

I think that the insurance and re-insurance companies will cover this. Even super high-risk activities are covered by insurance (such as satellite launches and deep-sea drilling rigs, in the case of satellites, the insurance can equal or exceed the cost of the booster and satellite). The added costs of insurance is just added to the product's cost (like helmets).

DaveGess,

he he reminds me of the time I let a long time friend and fellow HD rider take my S2 out for the first time. He did the same thing. Wound it up and dumped it only to find himself pointing skyward. LOL He brought it down and did the same in second. He was certainly impressed and is now the proud owner of an S1w, and still has his harleys.

Years ago a member here, I think it was Don C. had a throttle problem leaving a stop and ended up running into a house and breaking both wrists.

Seemed like a great guy and well liked. Anyone know what bike he was riding?

My guess would be that improperly adjusted cables can cause most of the problems...too tight and they can stick or open the throttle when turning...too loose and they can slip out of their perches sticking the throttle open. The other problem is when unexperienced people remove the cables and kink them. They're as good as garbage in that condition.

Every time something like this happens it's always blamed on defective machinery...

The current issue of MCN contains a brief summary and survey concerning Harley's TC-88 engine and cam bearing failure.

Having recently purchased a 2003 FXDWG from a private party, I am ignorant of this and any other issues concerning the bike.

It would be greatly appreciated if one of you could direct me to websites or other sources where I can obtain more detailed information.

Thank you in advance for your assistance concerning this matter.

I am pretty diligent about shunning stuff with "Made in China" on the label. However, as their prosperity grows the Chinese middle class grows, their hunger for material wealth grows, their wages will also grow. It is inevitable. A world economy seems to be a pretty significant equalizer.

Is it greedy for Americans to want a superior standard of living? Probably. Is it wrong? If it is at the expense of others, probably.

Do we want to help grow the power and influence of communist China? Absolutely NOT!

If China were a free society governed by elected officials in a representative fashion, I'd have much less concern about supporting their economy.

The question is...How far does the American Standard of Living have to decline before we are on a level playing field with the rest of the world (read: China)?

America simply cannot keep outsourcing our source of income (read: jobs) and expect us to not either starve to death or be on the welfare roles. Not to mention, the tax burden this will place on those that are fortunate enough to still have jobs.

The swing toward High/New Tech income generating jobs in America, has left a large number of folks in the 40+ age category out of the loop. Our jobs and traditional career paths have evaporated mid career.

So what's left, selling/servicing imported stuff? Even that is redundant as the offshore manufacturers have bypassed their American channels of distribution with their disposable (read: not worth repairing) products and are selling direct to the retailers.

In retrospect, one of the most galling experiences in my career was when a major retailer demanded the manufacturers remove the " US Flag and Made in America" logo from the front of our packaging and put it in fine print on the back the same as "Made in China."

Oh well, at least I own a Buell and a Harley. Perhaps, if and when the Miata finally dies, there will be an American made replacement for it. In the interim...Boycott Imports whenever possible and if you are forced to by an import, shop for one that is imported and distributed by an American manufacturer, not a retailer.

Blake,

Sooner or later cheap labor/services (blue or white) will all catch up to everyone. Soon the competition will be from Iran and Afghanistan. I believe a free country and its free people should secure itself socially and economically, from a short-term and long-term perspective before anything else. What happened to loyalty. Americans support China by purchasing their products therefore contributing to their corruptness.

My main point in the posting was a labor issue. I haven’t a clue how “we” can expect to compete in the labor market (blue or white collar) with such a wide margin. Mexico is no longer economically competitive in the world economy. An entry-level factory worker earns $1.50 to $2.00 per hour in Mexico, compared with 25 cents in parts of China. China has become their fiercest competitor. There has been a mass business exodus from Mexico to China and Southeast Asia for quite sometime now due to labor. China is the world’s most attractive low-cost production location. Foreign direct investments are being injected into China at an unprecedented rate, reaching nearly $50 billion in 2001, more than five times the value of foreign investment in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) combined. That’s a pretty scary statistic to me.

Americans need to pull their heads out of their ass and boycott products that are clearly marked made in China. Negotiating with China from a political and governmental perspective is really a moot issue when Americans purchase their products.

Hey, how about a good ol’ Freedom Scooter ...... proudly displaying the red, white and blue traditional colors, along with flying the good o’l USA flag. BTW, did you know that last year more than 1.3 million American flags were imported from China.
