I have fought several forest fires in the logging woods in the Pacific Northwest. I know how fast a fire can burn. What I can't imagine is what its like to have this happen in a residential area. Good luck you guys. Paul |

Why does my top end need rebuilding already? Just got a call from my dealer. I took my bike in because it was blowing about a quarter of a quart of oil out the breather bolts every tank of gas. Service guy is telling me I have 2 problems: 1-Likely that one of my exaust valves needs a new seal. 2-I need a top-end rebuild because my cylinders are worn more in the middle than at the top or bottom. I have no idea what that means, but thats what he said. My bike has only 8200 miles on it. I hardly abuse it and have been running Syn3 since it came out. I'm going tommorow to find out more but can anyone tell me why I should be having to deal with crap like this with the low miles I have? I have no warranty left on the bike. Thanks, Bart |

Thats what strikes me most about this too, Snail- I live pretty close to one of the fires and its crazy to think how many houses are going up- I mean we are used to forests and brush burning and that is bad enough- but neighborhoods are supposed to be SAFE. Kinda makes you lose that under water cozy feeling. |

Jamestown, CO has been evacuated due to a fire ... some of y'all may remember it. We went up a canyon, then through a small town, then a dirt road for a couple miles until we hit the Peak to Peak highway. Smoke was thick in Longmont yesterday. |

Hillbilly; thanks for the offer, but I'm flying to Denmark today to check up on family and friends. Aaron; I remember that canyon - the one with the funky coffee shop, right? Henrik |

No ... that was Ward. Next canyon over. We didn't stop in Jamestown. I imagine Ward got evacuated too. |

>Service guy is telling me I have 2 problems: You might try running the oil level right at the bottom of the dipstick before you rebuild the motor, you might also install a breather kit (won't help the problem but will keep the oil off your leg). Try the cheap stuff first. try searching the knowledge vault for a ton of info on this. |

Bart, Just how exactly was the dealership able to determine their assumptions? Did they do a compression test, a leak down test, have they already disassembled the top end and performed accurate measurements? You may, if at all possible, seek a second opinion elsewhere. I'm not saying they are wrong, just that some data appears to be missing. 8,000 miles on a 2002 bike? I'd say you're probably within the factory warranty period and all costs should be covered. |

Ferris, I have not forgotten your disk. Things here at work have been chaotic at best. We just lost 10% of our people and yours truly has had to play undertaker. It's awful to have to treat friends like you no longer trust them, watching them pack up and escorting them out the building. But, I digress... I'll get it together this weekend and get it out to you. I was looking at the pics of OctoberFast, the area you live is absolutely beautiful. |

Hey , I just wanted to thank all the Firefighters from around the country whom have come here to help on these wildfires. You guys put your life on the line for property and structures.Believe that we ALL appreciate it and Please stay safe!NO amount of trees or houses is worth one single life.I heard the firefighter was a Northern Californian.Did anyone know this guy?FMJ? I'd like to contribute to a fund if anyone finds out. Fortunately its sprinkling outside and maybe this will help.Stay safe and Pray for a good downpour. |

Ferris, I have not forgotten your disk. no worries, Glitch, take your time, it definitely sounds like you've got your hands full. I just wanted to thank all the Firefighters... right on on THAT statement, EBear. it may be JUST their job (as one firefighter said to me last year when i thanked he and his comrades for helping save my house), but there are not too many occupations where "just" doing your job requires being ready and willing to pay the ultimate price. no rain up here at the lake, but there is some definite weather -- cold, windy, and threatening -- trying to bust its way thru. hope all you guys down there get absolutley DUMPED on in the next few days. be safe out there! Bart02M2: Your dealer's story is highly suspect. You want a compression & leakdown test to try to isolate the problem. Moreover, at 8200 miles, it's H-D/Buell's problem - not yours. Let 'em know you're pissed & will not be blown off. Good luck! |

All, thanks for the replies. The service guy did compression and leakdown. I'm going to get the numbers today. Worst case, do I have a case for asking Buell to do something even though I have no warranty left? Bart |

Bart02m2, Second owner!....To put it bluntly; I'm afraid you're SOL... I really, really, really doubt you have a chance of any good faith repairs either from the dealer or Buell.... sorry, kk//kef edited by freyke on October 30, 2003 edited by freyke on October 30, 2003 |

Depending on how he came to be the second owner and how the bike was represented to him and how it was used by previous owner(s) he may still have some recourse available, at least according to Judge Judy in an episode I saw on TV this week when I was home sick and doing homework. But consider the source. But it also doesn't usually hurt to ask. |

If anything this bike has tought me to wrench some. When I couldn't affort to keep taking it to the dealer for repairs, I started doing alot of them myself. I did my font isolator, rebuilt and rejeted my carb, did my fork seals, primary gasket, etc. If I need a new top-end. What are the odds I'd be able to do it myself? Do you have to remove the engine? Thanks, Bart |

FMJ, Glad to see you pop your head in here! Was getting worried. At least in Philly the mayor starts the infernos. (MOVE, the '80s, oh never mind) Take care - Jenn has been pestering me to make sure you're okay, so be careful. |

Re: Fires in CA If any of you rode the CA BRAG Ride last year, Days 1 & 2 traveled through almost all the areas that have had fire. The Deluce area, The beauty of Highway 18, Rim of the World, Lake Arrowhead, the Moorpark area (Hwy 123), and Hwy 138 (on the way to Wrightwood). I find it very hard to look at the tv, to see such beautiful areas, that have such great roads and communities, that have been lost. Locally, Jerry Johnson rides always visited the Cleveland National Forest and the town of Julian. Through the last 3 years of Buell ownership, I have gotten to really know the areas of Palamar Mt. and the many areas now burned. It is so sad. I can not imagine riding all of those roads and seeing the devistation. Thanks for the Firefighters efforts! |

...the devastation is horrific agreed, but out of it will grow a new forest. I'm guessing there will be a major reseeding and tree planting effort. I vividly recall the wildfires in Yellowstone. There is so much new growth that it's difficult to see the burn scars. The next hurdle will be the spring rains...with devastated hillsides, mudslides... My thoughts and prayers are with you all |

Kevyn, California is so far in the hole financially that I question that any reseeding or replanting will be done unless it is federally funded. |
