You can also look into DAS (Dependable Auto Shippers) I used them to ship my X1 from NJ to NV for $350. Had to bring the bike to Linden, NJ, but I think they have a terminal in NY also. | ||

Renohiker, They had the same deal on the extended warranty when I bought my '00 X1; if you didn't use it, you get the money back. I took advantage of the offer. When I sold the X1, I contacted the dealer where I bought it to let them know. They asked that I provide the extended warranty paperwork back to them & nothing else. It took several weeks for the check to finally arrive, but I DID get it. No service receipts required. Something may be awry! | ||

thanks for asking, Aaron, i'm ok. we're at Lake Isabella, about 100 air miles north of where this is all going on. we, too, live in fire country, and have had several relatively small fires in the vicinity this summer, but we've been lucky and things have been quiet here for the past several months. Denise and i were in NorCal this weekend for BattleTrax, and spent a fair amount of time on the superslabs going and coming. we saw convoy after convoy of fire trucks from various fire departments around the state heading south to help. be safe out there, please, ALL of you. Well, We're in Florida visiting parents now, but Reindog indicates that the fires aren't near our house in SD. But there's some serious stuff going down about 10 miles east and 15 miles SE from the house. Hope we'll be able to fly in later this week, the airport has been affected as well. But in 97, the last time this happened, our house was the evacuation line. Scary stuff how fast the fire ripped across the scrub back behind our house. Cedar shake roofs became flaming flying frisbees of death, and they were everywhere. The difference then was that fire engines from all over the state were converged on San Diego. This time, the fire trucks from SD were up in Rancho Cucamonga and San Bernadino when SD went up, and the planes were in maintenance mode. Very sad for a LOT of people. I'm in the San Fernando Valley in (not so) Lovely Reseda. We've got stuff encroaching on the Valley to the North West and West. Also saw a fire in Malibu on Sunday - but heard NOTHING about it on the news! Kinda funny (as in peculiar, not humorous). Ash and smoke EVERYWHERE. The skies look apocalyptic with dimmed amber sunlight coaxing through the crud in the sky. Loli (who is pretty damned asthmatic) is having a terrible time. And I thought the smog was bad... As I sat and watched the news today I started to think about what I'd do if faced with an impending inferno. I couldn't even process that. I've lived in the same place for like 19 or 20 years. Had the same job for 13 years. I don't take too well to major change. I truly feel for those forced to undergo it. -Saro | ||

Aaron, While many of us are not in fire danger, we all have somewhat of an association to the fires, through our Buells. I (as have many SoCal Buellers) have ridden all the roads that lead through the towns that we hear on the news, particularly when they mention Julian, and Highways 18/138/23/126 (all BRAG California roads 2002 trip). They are such pretty areas, and the roads are so great. It will be hard to ride through those areas again when there has been so much destruction. | ||

Thanks for checking in. Saro, you hit the nail on the head, it would be pretty traumatic. I really feel for the people this has happened to. Snal, the XB9 uses a 3-1/2" bore just like a 1200. The difference is that it has a shorter stroke than an 883 or 1200, 3-1/8" instead of the standard 3-13/16". When they shortened the stroke they also made the rod longer by half the difference in the stroke. That way they could use the same cylinder height and piston pin height. So yes, all that stuff bolts right up, and no, you don't need to change the flywheel assembly. If you do change to an XB9 flywheel assembly, you'll get 984cc instead of 1203cc. Unless you're racing in a 1000cc class, I'd stick with the long stroke. What is it you're trying to accomplish? The only advantages I can see to using the XB9 jugs and pistons are the big fins on the cylinders (which match the big fins on the XB heads) and the domed XB9 piston, which is designed for the XB chamber. Be aware that you'll end up with 12:1 compression if you use that piston with a stock XB chamber and a 3-13/16 stroke. Personally, I'd advise a little chamber work and say a 30 degree domed piston, but the XB9 piston is a nice bolt-on for a stock chamber. The XB heads, however, are IMO the best OEM heads offered yet. There's one thing that won't bolt directly up, and that's the right front head mount bolt. It was something of a trouble point in the tube frame bikes so they moved that bolt hole in a little bit for the XB's, where they could get some more meat around it. You may have to fabricate a bracket if you're putting these heads onto a Sporty. Nallin Racing sells a bracket if you're putting them on a tube frame Buell. | ||

If LAX ever burns (riots notwithstanding), my home might be in danger, I'm that close. We are Ok. Thanks for asking, Aaron. Glendale BRAG rode up on the Crest Sunday, took a break at Newcombs and had lunch at Cal Sport Bike in Wrightwood. The air was crystal clear up on top. We could see billowing gray smoke from either the Lytle Creek or Upland fire on the south side of the mountains. Chilling sight that was. The Crest from Newcombs to Wrightwood was the dirtiest I've ever seen a public road, no doubt from the strong Santa Ana winds blowing all weekend. Rocks, sand & gravel in all the wrong places. We took it easy & made it through OK. On the return trip we took the alternate route from last year's Calif BRAG ride that bypasses the Crest -- Valyermo, Ft. Tejon, Mt. Emma, Angeles Forest, Crest. Coming down from the crystal clear air and seeing the LA basin with that apocalyptic brownish yellow haze was shocking. I hope all the best for those near the line of fire. | ||

My daughter works at the Tom Bradley Annex of LAX. She says that the smoke INSIDE the terminal is so bad that employees have bloodshot eyes and scratchy throats. | ||

Leeaw, I shipped with DAS at the end of May, I think they have Peak(summer) and off peak rates, you might be better off calling them. Also the rate I got was for dropping it off at their terminal and picking it up at one of their agents shop here in Reno. They didnt do door to door for bikes at that time. | ||

Easyflyer,Apex - I agree, it makes no sense since the extended was never used. But when i sent in my paperwork, they sent back a form asking for receipts that show maintenance was done. I guess it's a way for them to deny the claim if someone doesn't have all the docs. I might try to call the dealer in NJ where I bought it and see if they can help. | ||

flew through LA airport yesterday. we were delayed a little bit, maybe about 30 minutes on the tarmack. we could see the fires as we fly out of southern cal to northern cal last night. you could also smell the smoke in the plane as we were coming in. rex | ||

I'm about 30 Miles from the Socal Fires. Right now it really sucks. The air is so heavy that it hurts to breathe and your eyes get irritated walking from your car into the offices. I haven't ridden the bike all week, and I'm carrying an inhaler for the first time in over 12 years. One of my co-workers is literally a mile from the fires. She couldn't see her car when she walked out the front door the smoke was so bad. She and her family are packed for evacuation, and dust masks and goggles have become part of their daily lives. Another co-worker has family in both the Lytle Creek and Big Bear areas. After four days of worrying, She finally heard from her brother who lives in Lytle Creek, he has been fighting off the fires from his house and will not leave. She left work early today to pack up her stuff, the houses five miles away from hers had been evacuated. I live in a canyon community that is in tinderbox conditions, and my wife is constantly concerned that a stray ember or freaking arsonist will wander over and light our little canyon up. My consolations are that I live less than 100 yards from a fire station and my house has been sitting here longer than I've been on the planet. I truely respect and admire the firefighters that are busy protecting my life, and the law enforecement officers that are hunting down the arsonist bastard that started at least one of these fires. This fire season is the worst one that I can remember, I just hope that It's over soon... James | ||

the weather pattern apparently has shifted during the night,and i hope this is a good thing for the fire situation. we're quite a ways north (about a three hour ride) from the worst of it, but our sky is filled with smoke this morning, too, for the first time during this catastrophe. the sun is barely visible, just an angry red orb, so filtered by the smoke that you can stare straight at it without squinting. we had two major fires threaten our home LAST summer. standing out in the yard, alone, spraying the house down with what little water was coming out of the hose (we had lost power by this point, and thus any real water pressure), with hot embers flying thru the air, driven by the wind, thick, acrid smoke making it hard to breathe, the noise and fury of a half a dozen or so helicopters and air tankers flying over at tree top level dropping water and "slurry", firefighters in their trucks just one street over on their PA systems telling people to evacuate, wondering what would i grab in the five minutes or so i figured i had left, trembling like a leaf in a gale, feeling as small and helpless and frightened as i've ever been in my life. the firefighters prevailed, and my house and many others were saved. 60 or so other families in my neighborhood were not so lucky, tho, and returned "home" to find no home. i can imagine what it's like. yet i can NOT imagine what it's like.
