Is that damage in the clouded area too (not that it matters)? Did you dump the bike? -JW:> edited by jim_witt on September 06, 2003 |

>>Any repair ideas on this? New head? Sorry but thats basically the extent of it. If I would have seen your first post earlier I would have said "Don't ride without both mounting bolts." I've seen it happen before. Sorry bout your mis-fortuine, hopefully you will be riding again soon. Craig Buell Cycle Center

Jim: The area you outlined is a minor surface scratch placed on the rocker box as it slid by the mount bracket. Didn't dump it - had the other bolt shear off about 200 miles from home and rode it back. I don't know if the right side damage happened at the same time the bolt sheared, during the ride back or when I was out picking up replacement hardware yesterday. Like you say, not that it matters . . . Craig: Thats sort of what I expected to hear - just had been hoping someone had some magic JB weld fix something. |

At the risk of setting off an oil debate, thoughts on mixing Mobil 1 5-30 and Mobil 1 10-30. Like if you had 10-30 in and accidently dumped in a quart of 5-30. Problem or just a weird mix? Court |

Court, In my experience just a weird mix - like a 9 w 30 |

I dont think this will work here but there are rods that are used for welding aluminium with a low heat propane torch. They welded a broken ear onto a bell housing. I think it is called Alumoy or something like that. |

Thanks, Smitty. Welding the broken piece back on after providing some additional thread depth is one of the options I have been pondering. Being a hack welder myself (nothing wrong with my welding that an hour or so of angle grinding can't cure -gakkk!) I will shop around for someone that actually knows what they are doing when the time comes. Too bad a certain Mr. Witt isn't located a little closer - this sounds like a job for the Welding Wizard Wonder of Payson (?) Arizona. Don |

Court: As Philly said, depending on how much of the lighter stuff was still in the engine, the resulting mix will be between 9 and 7 W. Should not be an issue of any type. Ride Safe Tom |

Any one have a listing for a "good" dual sport page? Looking for input on dual sports for an upcoming trip (spring 2004) up the Alcan highway. Thanks |

Don, Do you (or anyone) know exactly what the material is? BTW my place is in Pine Arizona, not Payson. Pine is about 20 minutes Northeast of Payson and a 1000 ft. higher. I'm right below the red cone below on the hill (which is higher than it looks). -JW:> |

Tom; There have been a few adventure tourer reviews in the mags the last 6 months or so. AFAIR BMW gets high marks for being the "real thing" ready for anything. The Suzuki (??) got the best "bang for the buck" reviews. Jim; where do you find those topographic maps?? Henrik |

Check here and here. More topos here if you're interested in seeing the B.R.A.G. Arizona Torque Fest that's here in October. There's approximately 470 turns in approximately 90 miles and that's only half of the route. BTW, since you can't make it to Bonneville this year, maybe you can make the Torque Fest. You can use my Buell too. Click on the 2 thumbnails labled Route 191 Clifton and Alpine Arizona. There are some topos of the route and SAT images as well. -JW:> edited by jim_witt on September 06, 2003 |

Henrik: Thanks We are planning to ride the Alcan as part of charity raising event for the Victory Junction Gang Camp being built by Patty and Kyle Petty. Would like to ride a buell, however, something more "off road" seems appropriate. Maybe one of the Army Rotex Harleys? Thanks Tom

Jim: I spent some time knocking around that whole area one early winter in the mid '70s with a TV/movie crew. I was a 10 week guest at the Swiss Village Inn in Payson and spent about half the time filming on the first unit set near Pine. The area was pretty deserted in the off season, and can recall multiple speed runs to Phoenix for materials, supplies and entertainment. Great country - particularly liked the Mogillion (sp)Rim. Don, It isn't that way nowadays. TONS of people have made Payson their retirement home. There are TONS of poorly constructed multi-million dollar homes in the area. A butt-load of California folks have also purchased there. Durning the holidays Payson has bumper to bumper traffic in town. There also a "line of traffic" during holidays from Phoenix to Payson (no shit either). -JW:> |

Jim: Those friggin' Kaliforkers are infesting all of my old favorite places. Glad I got out of that place (Born, raised and first 20 years in Santa Clara Valley, Ca.) before it went through the conversion. ;-{) Question: which Delorme software did you use for the maps? They have two topo programs, Topo USA and 3DTopoQuads. Don |

Don, I have the Topo USA v.4, DeLorme SAT 10 Arizona and the Street Atlas USA. I've used the software since 97. Matter of fact, when I first met you at the Taos event I was using it. That's what I used to plan my trip from Arizona to Candada and back. Oh, to answer your question, I used the Topo USA for the maps on my site. It has a lot more features than you're seeing there. -JW:> |

Got a slightly rough KLR600 of 84 vintage. I think I would be getting the better end of any deal. If interested let me know. Located in MD. SteveH |

Don, A grade 5 bolt should never be used to replace a grade 8. The difference between the two is not in tinsel strength but the ability of the grade 8 to withstand more heat without losing tinsel strength. Several years back NASA and the FAA discovered counterfeit grade 5 bolts with grade 8 markings were being imported from off-shore manufacturers. Some had been used in aircraft engines. It's been a few years since I bought them but as I recall the genuine Buell mounting bolts were reasonably priced and not too hard to find. G |

well, i think the time has come to trade the 99m2 on a new firebolt. i have looked over the XB files and have only found a broken front iso mount as a problem. is it possible that buell bikes no longer need to come with a complete mechanics tool set and rudimentary special tool fabrication skills. if anyone has any any good information that would stop me please let me know now, the dealership is closed on monday. i don't mind working on my bike, but i would like something that requires less maintenence. -pat |
