Lib, you're right on the money about Wyoming winters. My Dad grew up on a ranch near near Rock Springs, and told me stories about the weather there. The only way to get to town in the winter was to drive down a frozen river. They'd take off the doors and replace them with cardboard in case the old Model A truck went through the ice and they had to bale out. Dad told me stories of 30 to 40 below zero temps backed up by 70+ mph winds. Kinda puts a damper on winter motorcycling. | ||

Prior to having hernia surgery, I browsed through hernia discussion groups - not unlike this discussion group. After reading, I thought I would have a lot of pain, swollen/black testicles, ongoing pain, and I would never be able to have sex again. 4 days after surgery, I'm walking around wondering how so may people could have had that many problems. Statistics show relatively few issues. As I own a '99 X1, reading online would make me think the fuel injection is going to blow up, the transmission will grenade itself, the pistons will grow holes, and I will never be able to have sex again. I think online discussion groups (of any type) tend to amplify any problems, and cast suspicion. Maybe read accordingly..... | ||

OK,what happened to the "Blame the Dane" postings?Oh well I am gonna anyway.I am having a sucky time this week at work.Supposed to have friday off to go pick up my son from skateboard camp and then head to LA for the X-Games,right?Wrong,no one wants to make time and a half(Sissies)and I am stuck at work.Finally find 1 person out of fifty I call that agrees to hold in for me so I can at least pick my son up and come home(9+ hr drive)BUT he cannot work whole shift as he will be in excess,so no frikkin X-games.Had to come back and work last 1/2 shift for me and then 1/2 of his shift payback,damn!!!Now here I sit again,stuck at work cuz someone went home with an owie(at least I am getting time and 1/2).But have a bag of parts in the truck to work on LSR bikes and here I sit for the next 72 hours--if they let me go home on friday.So, of course,I BLAME THE DANE!!!! | ||

I'll blame the Dane also... Hey Henrik, thanx for creating that mini-site to explain replacing the crankcase seal. It was VERY helpful this morning. Job done. Now back to reinstalling the tranny which JMartz hand massaged and found why my 3rd gear shifts were balky, and the updated detent plate donated by JMartz, and removing one more broken exhaust stud using the special tool borrowed from .... (well you know), and welding or replacing the race header, and various other overdue maintenance items. It'll be nice to ride the bike again so the wife can stop acting like a punching bag.  | ||

What did JMartz find Tripper? When I had mine apart, I found that the shift drum had some raised lips along the slot edges that needed a little cleaning up. Nothing major, but it did slightly groove the inside of those (bronze?) shifting forks. | ||

I was stuck at a busy house and actually had to do stuff.Those whiney medical calls at midnight,2am and 5:30am tend to screw up your sleep pattern.Back at my own station now,so nap and weight room are calling.Waiting for that famous gubernatorial candidate--WOZ to come by and pick up trailer--if he can find time between interviews.He's on the O'Reilly Factor tonight. | ||

I don't know if this is a problem, or normal for Buells. I just noticed it coming up my driveway a few minutes ago. Whenever I let off the clutch in 1st it makes a grinding noise. I assume it just started doing this because I have never heard it before. You kind of get used to the normal noises one makes and when you hear something out of the norm, it freaks you out. Anybody have an answer? Ken | ||

Blastard... Check your primary chain tension. And if I am reading your profile correctly, and you have a 2000 M2, and you are still running the original primary chain tensioner, you might want to pull the primary cover and replace it with the upgraded version. The backplates split on the original version, and can look like the primary chain is adjusted correctly while not under load (the only time you can check it) but not actually be working correctly. | ||

Anyone had a problem with the bolt/ nut combo that holds their seat on? My 'nut' on the seat is chewed up to the point that the bolt doesn't hold anymore. I was thinking of tearing the whole thing out and putting in a wingnut and a real nut in the seat. Thanks, Alex | ||

WooHoo! Added a forcewinder to the X1 last night. This morning, magically all my fuel injection problems went away. (it used to stumble or backfire randomly between 3- 4.5K rpm)_ Took her up to 125 and had plenty to go. Wish I had listen a year ago. Guess the gutted airbox, wasn't gutted enough. No if I can just nail down the rockerbox leaks | ||

Interesting, FBI Homieland Security Pamplet. If you open the 89 page .PDF file, I suggest you have a broadband connection. Since I'm a custom knife collector I have a direct interest in all this. Just curious if anybody else saw the newest FBI Homieland Security Pamplet. It's designed to help airport security screeners better spot concealed weapons. If you look on page 61 you'll see the plastic razor blades too. Almost invisible and a xray won't pick it up. Kind of makes you wonder how far they should take all this. Seems they would have better luck scanning for explosives and guns to me. If they design the plane so there's 2 different entrances for pilots and passengers - impossible to enter or leave cockpit at anytime might be another good idea. -JW:> edited by jim_witt on August 14, 2003 | ||

JW - Retrofitting commercial aircraft with a separate door into the cockpit simply cannot be done. New aircraft specifically designed with a separate cockpit door would have to be built from scratch. What you suggest is far more extreme than the alternatives curently being employed. | ||

Interesting Jim. Frankly, after Sept 11, I don't think a hijacker armed with a cutting or stabbing instrument could take over a plane anymore. Passengers know what the plan is, and will do what it takes to stop it. I can only assume that Pilots are also taking things a lot more seriously as well, and no longer expect hijackers to play nice. If we can get these idiots in washington to get them armed sooner rather then later, it will become even less of an issue. They should do what they can to intercept weapons going aboard planes, but more to know who to focus attention on and to investigate, not so much because they think it is some magic bullet. It will catch the stupid and sloppy. I am about the nicest kindest most compassionate person you could meet on the planet. If I were in a plane hijacking situation, the terrorist would have a serious problem, no matter what pointy things he might be carrying. And I am not alone. | ||

" I've sat in an airport terminal before and watched a pilot open a front/side window in the cockpit and drop some paperwork to someone on the ground, then watched that ground crew wad the paper up and throw it back up to the pilot. There are always ways around security, and there are ways to retrofit separate doors to cockpits. They could back the planes into the terminal and load passengers from the rear doorway, then seal off the cockpit from the 1st Class passenger area and have the front doorway for cockpit crew only. There are always options. | ||

If we would stop being so damned politicaly correct and take a look at who's boarding the planes we'd be better off. Last time I was at Hartsfeild they pretty much let everyone on without more than one or two random searches...the one search I saw was a little old lady carrying a purse... |
