James and Al: Here is what I am needing...if you can help. This will make things much easier to ship and use for the various team pit crews. I could use (if possible) 4 sets or 8 plates. They are symetrical. Thanks, Court (I'll delete this post as soon as the two of you get it)

I've calmed down a bit now, I backed away from the edge.... The computer gods haven't totally smiled upon me but have cracked a slight grin. I messed around a bit and somehow was able to restore the lost data to my Palm desktop app but I can't get it to sync to my Palm V. At least I have the data!!!! As I was going through it I realize how much info I really had on the device. Phone numbers that I could probably never find again, etc... Pretty scarey. I now have 4 text versions backed up on 2 CD's and 2 different hard drives. The rest of the afternoon didn't get much better. I was putting the S2 up in the rear axel stands so I could make the kickstand mods. The kickstand folded up and down it went! Scratch one left front blinker, one really bent shift lever. I'm glad today is a new day...... edited by bluzm2 on August 10, 2003 |

BigDaddy, Damn, I didn't know anyone else was up here. I've been in the Bakersville area (Roan Mountain) for the last week. The weather has sucked, it's rained everyday. I got about 5-600 miles in so far and will take one more ride before I leave tomorrow afternoon. The Parkway was great on Thursday. I kept about 60-80mph from Crabtree (State Road 80) to the viaduct. Didn't see one cop and only got stuck behind two cars. I've really been hitting 80, 261, and the Carver's Gap area pretty hard. The riding is so great here I may have to move up here full time. If anyone is headed to the Gap soon, It's been raining A LOT lately so watch that gravel. Joel |

Bluzm2... Sorry to hear about your pain. Go to the transmission section of the knowledge vault if you want to hear what I went through replacing that same mainshaft. It is a LOT of hard work, and about a bazillion opportunities for defects when it goes back together. I hope to get more pictures posted there soon. It also requires a lot of little bitty parts that may or may not be in stock, and it is incredibly hard to know which to order ahead of time, so cut the dealer a little slack if it ends up taking an extra week or so. I am generally really good at sweating these kind of details and making things happen in one shot, and I could not pull it off, I ended up with three different parts orders by the time I was done (2 weeks). None of the things that can go wrong on reassembly are a big deal, but take a good 20 to 40 mile ride without going far from the dealership when you get it back, give it time to cool down, and repeat. You might want to pack along an allen head socket set and a torque wrench and write down the torque settings for those primary cover screws. I have found that if I don't retorque mine after each of a couple thermal cycles and a couple hard rides, I am asking for a leak. Also pay close attention to any feelings of back end wandering on the ride when you get it back. Your first warning of a leak is a slight back end wander on a braking turn. Your second warning is a 180 degree spin in the next turn from a stop. Look back at the rear wheel for oil flows every time you come to a stop. They have to pull the primary cover and the sprocket / 5th gear drive assembly to do the job, so there are opportunities for leaks from both sides of the bike. Hey, at least you just recouped the cost of your extended warranty. You are looking at $115 for the mainshaft, $65 each for any gears, $50 or so in misc small bearings, $18 for the big sprocket pully bearing (that is destroyed when you pull that 5th gear assembly, though in hindsight I think you might be able to replace those bearings in place). In short, you are looking at probably $200-$450 in parts, and at *least* 10 hours labor. None of the individual jobs are that bad, but they really stack up. On the palm, if you keep the name the same for the PDA, the data should return easily with the next hotsync. The first hotsync with a virgin unit should pop up a list of names for users on that computer and allow you to check one. Hotsync should restore the device from there. If you need to restore old data, just look for the palm directory (could be in \program files, but could be anywhere). You should see a mangled version of your name on a folder in that directory some where. Restore that folder from an old backup, do a hard reset to completely clear your Palm, hotsync, and you should see your user name to select. If the backups or old, Palm Desktop generally keeps one previous copy of each of your data files. Depending on your thrashing trying to recover, these may or may not have survived. Look for address.pdb (I think that is the name, I can check when I get home), and you should see a backup file near it (I think the same directory). Something like address.bak. Email me offline if you keep getting beat up by this. |

My M2 is making funny noises as well, hopefully that isn't my problem. Guess I'll find out tonight when I take it out for the first spin after the 3rd detent plate repair. Reep, any chance you can email me plans for the tools you made to remove the whole deal? I'd appreciate it. Send 'em to PriorAlex@johndeere.com Thanks, Alex |

AW... I have pictures, I will try and post them with a writeup tonight. That being said, I think there might be a way to do it without the major scary tool and major step, pressing out that fifth gear drive assembly. I am not sure it will work, but it would be cheap, harmless, and easy enough to try next time somebody has to do that job. And with *that* also being said, you can probably do a decent inspection by removing 3 bolts, a nut, and a $2 seal (that would need to be replaced). Just pull the sprocket guard cover thing, and you can see the seal pressed into the end of the mainshaft right in the middle of the sprocket nut (that will not have to be removed). It would be easy to pull that seal out with a wood screw or something. Once that is out, you should be able to kinda see in there. I had a rusty muddy mess that would have been immediately obvious. It is also not a terrible job to pull out the tranny, and once you do that you can stick your finger right inside that 5th gear assembly and really check things out. With the bike in neutral, and the belt off that front sprocket, you should be able to easily turn that front sprocket by hand. It should not hang up or give uneven resistance. Had I taken action when I found that (8000 miles ago) I would have saved my mainshaft (probably). Anyway, I will post some pictures and a writuep over in the knowledge vault, we are probably getting too detailed for the general discussion board.

Bill, I've been following your tranny trivals', that's why I decided to take advantage of my extended warranty. It didn't sound like much fun.... I'm going to talk to the mechanic later today to get the whole scoop. I kind of knew it was going to be down for a while but as I said before, I've got the S2 to play on. Regarding the PalmV. I think I've got it whipped. I did a pin reset and did a complete resync. All the data returned to the correct location! Wahooo! Thanks for the support offer. I've now got all current data backed up all over the place! Alex, What is it sounding like? How many miles on the bike? does the sound change when you pull in the clutch? Me thinks we better move this to the KV before Blake shows up! Brad |

Brad, Did the shop give you any ballpark estimates on the parts/labor? Best case/worst case? Just curious at this point. Finally had a sidestand switch failure on the M2 last Friday. Bared the wire and gave it a hard twist and it got me home. |

S1Joel, There's a few of us up in the area, but not many. We need to hook up and go for a mid-October run -- I freaking love the Gap when it's just a bit nippy. I will be in Europe until October 1st and then I'm taking some time off (until it snows) to go Buelling. I have every intention of going straight (meaning as soon as the wife will give me a kitchen pass) to Statesville and hooking up with Bubba and taking me a new XB12? to the house. It would be great to hook up with some fellow Buellers and tear up the Parkway. I usually end up riding with my local buddies (none of them ride Buells) so I have to get the FLSTF, AKA SlugBoy, out of the barn to group ride with them. Drop me a line if you're interested. I'm heading down to Bruchmuhlbach HD tomorrow and see what kind of interesting Buell parts they may have -- the Germans can really surprise you with some of their adaptations. Later! Greg |

Mike, No estimate yet. I didn't get a hold ot the mechanic today. I'm sure it will be a couple of hundred for the parts alone. The deductable for the extended warranty is $50. That works for me!! Brad

Okay,,,I know,,,off the subject, but I need this info tonight so I'll ask hear and repost in the appropriate KV section,,,"Permatex medium strength threadlocker blue automotive grade" for ALL the rockerbox cover bolts? And do y'all use the "surface prep activator?" Really want put this together tonite. How clean do the threads of the head need to be? Like completly de-greased with isopropyl? Or just clean? I have never used this threadlock stuff...lol..thanks ,,,JM edited by joplin on August 11, 2003 |

i personally do not often use the threadlocker blue when it is indicated. matter of fact i'm more inclined to use some anti-sieze and the right torque value. my rocker boxes were off 4000mi ago for gasket upgrade and i did not reinstall them with any permatex(or anti-sieze)...no problems. i always make sure every bolt is squeaky clean before i reinstall...acetone and compressed air. -pat

Thanks Brad, Probably jinxing myself but with the refundable warranty I like to keep a rough idea of major repair costs so I can figure out if it's better to do the labor myself and buy needed tools or have the/a shop do it. So far the M2 hasn't needed any major repairs apart from the crash repairs from the pickup hitting me, but that wasn't covered by the warranty for some odd reason. |

Court or DaveG (or anyone for that matter)... do you have a list of all the Buell models ever made? |

Chop, You may have to clarify if you mean model designators, or if you want it broken down into stuff like "X1 Millenium Edition". If you want it broken down that far then some of the "customer choice" models/variations may be a problem. Or you can go to the dcbrag.org history pages or the davegess.com pages for a fairly complete showing of past models as well. Just trying to be helpfull. |

>>>do you have a list of all the Buell models ever made? In the best "Clintonesque"..."that depends on what the meaning of ALL is". Mike's question is a valid one. To illustrate. 1.) I can get all the models in a given year simply from the sales literature distributed in the various coutnries. 2.) But, and this is where it could get good, if you look at the total number of homologated units, it could be much larger. Buell, in a year where there is "an S-1, M-2 and S-3" in the catalog could produce like 34 different bikes to deal with te various regs. England for instance gets an "almost" Euro bike (remeber the differing size breadbox) but with a MPH speedo. Change 7 parts (guessing here) and you get a bike that has turn signal filiments 17" c-c meeting Aussie specs. With me? The above are not REAL examples, I haven't got the stuff with me so I am guessing. But you, nonethe less, get the drift. For a free candy bar, what was the first foreign county a Buell was sold in? Wiat?...I'm probalby wrong on this one as well. So for now....let's say ONE model..."The Fun One"

My though is things like CLutch Covers, which can be easily switched back to stock, could be modified to include the radi station's logo. Any other suggestions? Any idea's who could do the work? Hi all, Got back from Sturgis late Saturday night. We logged 4400 miles in the saddle. The trip was awesome. If you've never seen the Black Hills area you should plan a trip there. It is very beautiful. I think Wyoming is my favorite. I would imagine it gets extremely cold there in the winter though. Below is a t-shirt I saw while riding through the Custer Wildlife area viewing the buffalo.
